DescriptionExhibitionIn its 49-year-history, the Amon Carter Museum has presented more than 400 special exhibitions devoted to American art. Exhibitions, especially those that are displayed in the museum's special exhibition galleries, are costly to produce. However, they achieve the museum's objectives of not only bringing repeat audiences to the museum, but also offering unique programming and marketing opportunities to attract new audiences and positively impact new segments of the community. Exhibitions make available to diverse audiences of all ages some of the finest works of American art ever created and provide meaningful context for them. They shed light on the importance and relevance of the Amon Carter's collection of American art and promote its availability as a free resource for entertainment and learning. Through onsite tour programs, student programs at schools, and live, two-way videoconferences, exhibitions expose thousands of students from this community, around the state, and around the country and beyond to beautiful and important artworks that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to see.During FY 2010, the Amon Carter presented two special exhibitions and eight exhibitions from its permanent collection. Dozens of free education programs related to these exhibitions were offered. Admission to the Amon Carter is free, even for special exhibitions.Exhibition Highlights-Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian, December 12, 2009 - May 16, 2010, was visited by 21,412 people (55.6% of the museum's total visitors during this time). In 1900, Edward S. Curtis undertook the momentous task of documenting American Indian cultures across the United States. Over the next thirty years, he took over 40,000 photographs and collected information about more than eighty tribes, ranging from the Inuit people of the far north to the Hopi people of the Southwest. This exhibition displayed a selection of works from the museum's compelling recent acquisition of Curtis' series The North American Indian and was organized by the Amon Carter.-American Moderns on Paper: Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, February 27 - May 30, 2010, was visited by 16,682 people (57.8% of the museum's total visitors during this time). Complementing the Amon Carter's own modernist holdings, this exhibition provided a groundbreaking new look at the varied directions pursued by modern American artists from 1910 to 1960. Capturing the restless, spontaneous, and confident American spirit, the exhibition examined progressive art movements such as Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Neo-Romanticism. This exhibition was organized by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. -Ansel Adams: Eloquent Light, May 29 - November 7, 2010, was visited by 32,910 people (61.2% of the museum's total visitors during this time). Ansel Adams was the last major artist to subscribe to the romantic tradition of American landscape and excelled at capturing a glorious American West before tourism and development marked the land. This exhibition of forty landmark and lesser-known works by the renowned artist-photographer was drawn from the Amon Carter's holdings as well as a private collection and was organized by the Amon Carter.-Constructive Spirit: Abstract Art in South and North America, 1920s - 1950s, June 26 - September 5, 2010, was visited by 14,559 people (61.7% of the museum's total visitors during this time). Featuring approximately eighty seldom seen paintings, sculpture, prints, photographs, drawings, and films, this exhibition juxtaposed the work from artists of the Americas, providing a fresh and innovative look at this dynamic and cosmopolitan period of modernism. This exhibition was organized by the Newark Museum.Description

DescriptionCollectionThe Amon Carter Museum opened in 1961 in a building designed by architect Philip Johnson and is open free to the public. Over the last 49 years, it has expanded its collection to include nearly 8,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and watercolors and almost 45,000 exhibition quality photographic prints. The Carter is now one of the world's preeminent museums devoted exclusively to the study of American art with premier masterworks by great American artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Through a series of shrewd acquisitions, scholarly catalogs, special exhibitions, and academic and public programs, the Carter early on established its reputation as a national leader in collecting and advancing American art scholarship. In addition to its special exhibitions, the museum presented several exhibitions from the permanent collection between October 2009 - September 2010: Masterworks of American Photography, Ansel Adams: Eloquent Light; Leon Polk Smith: The Tamarind Lithography Workshop; Masterworks of American Photography: Popular Culture; Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian; Freedom Now: Tamarind Lithography Workshop, and Views and Visions: Prints of the American West. These installations allow the Carter to fulfill its mission by offering visitor insight into the American experience through great works of art.Works from the Amon Carter's collection are frequently loaned to other art institutions around the country. During FY 2010, the museum loaned 137 objects, including Thomas Eakins' Swimming and William Merritt Chase's Idle Hours to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the exhibition American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life, 1765 - 1915; one bronze and six paintings by Charles M. Russell to the Denver Art Museum for The Masterworks of Charles M. Russell: A Retrospective of Paintings and Sculpture; and two paintings by Charles Deas to the Denver Art Museum for Charles Deas: Telling Tales to 1840s America. Works from the collection were also loaned to the National Portrait Gallery, Museum of Modern Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Autry National Center, National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the New Britain Museum of American Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others. The Amon Carter is in the midst of a major initiative to digitize its collections with the goal of a fully digitized, cataloged, searchable, and accessible online collection database and Internet site to make the collections available to our expanding audiences and to promote the exploration, scholarship, and understanding of American art and art history. As of the close of FY 2010, all of the works in Amon Carter's paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and watercolor collections have been fully cataloged and digitized. The museum received a grant in April 2009 from the National Endowment for the Arts to digitize its collections of watercolors, drawings, and prints, which number more than 7,000 objects. Under the NEA grant, over 5,000 of these works on paper were digitally photographed and added to collections database in FY 2010. In July 2010, the museum was awarded a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to digitize and fully catalog over 24,000 priority photographs from the collection. The museum also submitted a grant request to the National Endowment for the Humanities in July 2010 to complete the digitization of photographs in several of its artist archives and monographic collections.Collection preservation and conservation are central to the Amon Carter's mission. The Museum shares a state-of-the-art paintings conservation lab with the Kimbell Art Museum and has its own on site conservation lab staffed by a conservator of photographs and a conservator of works on paper. Approximately 1,000 objects were examined during FY 2010 for exhibition or publication projects, and a total of 448 objects from the museum's collection and its archives were treated. Collections staff continually works to research copyright status for works in the collection. During FY 2010, research was conducted on more than 14,000 works. The museum also generated $12,500 in income through rights and reproductions fees through 164 contracts. The Amon Carter added 30 works to its collection in FY 2010, including major paintings by George de Forest Brush and Paul Kane, photographs by Dorothea Lange and Stephen Shore, and a set of nearly 200-year-old lithographs depicting the Hawaiian islands.Description

DescriptionEducationThe Amon Carter has developed a broad range of award-winning educational programs for people of all ages and continues to create new arts learning experiences, while improving and extending the reach of existing ones. A few examples of programs include:-School Tours Program. Tours for students are led by a team of professional gallery teachers who design the programs to correlate to curricular standards and incorporate inquiry-based strategies that engage students in discussions about works of art. The tours are multidisciplinary in approach, bringing together topics from social studies, language arts, visual art, and science, among others-all of which support the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning objectives, as well as national education standards. -Professional Development Programs for Educators. Offered throughout the year, these programs provide in-depth looks at the museum's permanent collection and special exhibitions through discussions led by professional educators and activities that refine participants' observation and critical-thinking skills. Participating educators receive a CD with related digital images and lesson plans tied to state and national teaching standards for classroom use. The Amon Carter is certified by the Texas State Board of Education Certification to provide teachers with Continuing Professional Education credit hours for their participation. -The Teaching Resource Center (TRC) is a well-stocked lending library of free resources on American art, history, and art-making techniques in a wide range of formats, including teaching guides, videos and DVDs, books for adults and children, and reproductions. The Amon Carter is one of three Texas art museums that has a teaching resource center and one of two Texas museums that is a repository for teaching resources from the National Gallery of Art. Digital images from the Amon Carter's permanent collection are also provided to educators for classroom use through the TRC. -Distance Learning Program. This innovative initiative brings works from the Amon Carter's collection into classrooms and senior residential living facilities across the country and internationally. The live, interactive programs engage students, educators, and seniors with museum staff in discussions and activities exploring art, history, culture, language arts, and science. Programs may be broadcast from a studio in the Education Department's offices or directly from the museum's galleries using a mobile unit. -Public Programs. The Amon Carter's free public programs provide people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to discover more about American art. For adults, highlights include gallery talks, interactive tours, lectures, and symposia, which bring renowned artists, curators, historians, and scholars to the museum, and docent-guided tours and Ask About Art Carts, which provide interactive gallery experiences. Families spend time together exploring artworks during programs like Storytime at the Carter, Family Fun Days, and New Parents' Tours.Description

Facts And Circumstances TestThe Amon Carter Museum of Western Art (the "Amon Carter") is a museum organized to collect, preserve and exhibit the finest examples of American art, and to serve an educational role through exhibitions, publications and programs devoted to the study of American art. Through its diverse programs and services, the museum strives to position itself as an influential cultural and social force in the Fort Worth-Dallas community and region. The Amon Carter qualifies as a public charity under the facts and circumstances test of Reg. Sec. 1.170A-9(e)(3) as it meets the following requirements:Ten Percent of Support Test:The Amon Carter received 17.26% of its support from the general public or government entities in the 2005-2009 lookback period.Attraction of Public Support Requirement:Admission to all of the Amon Carter's galleries, special exhibitions and public programs is free. The Museum's Development staff actively conducts research on and seeks donations from foundations, trusts, corporations, individuals, and government agencies for the various Museum activities. The Museum's individual membership (1,900 members) and corporate membership (50 members) programs generate revenue from their annual dues. An annual fund campaign is also conducted each year. Members of the Board of Trustees and senior staff are actively involved in the on-going fund raising effort. Additionally, the Museum has an extensive web site that promotes its past, present and future programs. The web site also prominently features the Museum's collection, its special exhibitions, and its Museum store merchandise. In FY 2010 the web site received 266,227 total visits.Sources of Support Factor:Despite the fact that the Museum receives less than one third of its support from sources that are considered "public" or "governmental," support comes from cash donations, program fees, donated goods/services and gifts of art from a large number of individuals and organizations, both for-profit and tax exempt. In FY 2010 over 2,300 contributors supported the Museum at various giving levels. During the 2010 fiscal year, the Museum had 103,234 visitors come through the facility. Representative Governing Body Factor:The Board of Trustees is a blend of Carter family members and independent Trustees from the outside, consisting of a banker, a lawyer, philanthropists, an art museum director, an educator, and corporate/community leaders. New members are occasionally added; however, the Board does not experience high turnover.Availability of Public Facilities or Services Factor:The Museum is open to the public six days a week. Admission is free. The Museum also houses a library that is open to the public, students and scholars for research into American art. The Museum is a repository of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, one of only five such sites in the country. It provides educational programs designed for adults, families, teachers, and students (including home-schooled students and their parents) and resources for incorporating American art in the classroom. In fiscal 2010 the Teaching Resource Center served 7,950 users who borrowed 638 items; in addition, 1,265 digital images were shared with educators across the country. 20,221 students and 3,077 teachers participated in the school tour and educator training programs, respectively. 147 distance learning programs were broadcast to 12,112 students and teachers across the country and internationally. The Museum hosted public programs in conjunction with its permanent collection and special exhibitions, including 58 adult learning programs and 32 youth and family programs, which together served 7,669 people.Additional Facts Pertinent to Membership Organizations:This is not applicable to the museum.FactsAndCircumstancesTest
