About
Who
Built by Michael Olenick.
I had the fortune, or misfortune, of working on the financial crisis with Congress, the Treasury, the Federal Reserve and a small army of attorneys. Today I work with the media, government, academia and plenty of advocates. A former lead attorney once called me "a dangerous guy." I take it as a compliment: I find problems and solve them.
I have a law degree but don't practice. I write and run other systems, but this one solves a real pain point. It was, and still is, a labor of love that I built for myself. I thought the world might be interested too.
Why
People say they run nonprofits, sit on boards, and draw no salary. Checking takes an hour of digging through IRS filings, so most people don't bother.
Sometimes the people doing it deserve our thanks. Other times they want to move the in-ground pool a few feet and fly first class, or at least business.
Because of abuse, people stop giving. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, and I hope this makes it easier to give to the charities that deserve it.
Type a name and see every Form 990 that person appears on, with the filing linked so you can read it yourself. It's free, it's open source, and it's much faster than asking Claude, ChatGPT or the others.
What you can do
- Search people by name and see every organization, title, year and dollar of pay.
- Ask questions in plain text, such as "Who runs the Red Cross?"
- Find organizations by name, or list every organization in a city or state.
- Open organization pages with finances, people, contractors, grants made and received, and where the money went.
- Find donor-advised fund sponsors and the grants foundations paid.
- See who funds an organization, organizations similar to it, and the funders that back similar organizations. Funders come from the grants other filers list: foundations on the 990-PF and charities, including donor-advised fund sponsors, on Schedule I. Similar means the same or a closely related NTEE code and a comparable budget.
- Browse the leaderboards, from the highest-paid people to fundraising event costs.
- Copy any large table, or download a leaderboard as CSV.
- Open each filing, with a link to the original 990.
- Coverage: tax years 2010 to 2025, e-filed returns only.
What it is not
- Not affiliated with the IRS or ProPublica.
- Not legal, financial or tax advice.
- Not more accurate than the filings. The data is only as good as what organizations reported to the IRS.
