Description	CPJ was established by a group of U.S. journalists in 1981 to defend colleagues abroad who often work at great risk. Today, CPJ is widely recognized as a leader in the global press freedom movement. CPJ is distinguished by the high quality of its reporting, a reputation for political independence, decades of experience, and an influential board of directors. CPJ takes action when journalists are censored, jailed, kidnapped, or killed for their work. Through its defense of journalists, CPJ protects the right of all people to have access to diverse and independent sources of information. CPJ's professional staff of journalists and regional experts reports on press freedom violations, advocates for reforms, and provides emergency aid to journalists at risk. CPJ pursues direct engagement with government officials-including meetings with heads of state-to secure results. CPJ's meticulous reporting is routinely used as the basis for protests and appeals by a range of influential actors, such as other international human rights and free expression groups, United Nations representatives, and political leaders. CPJ's coverage is amplified by major international media coverage. All of CPJ's published work is available online at cpj.org - which includes sections in Arabic, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. CPJ's work has been profoundly affected by the technological innovations that are reshaping the environment for international newsgathering. The organization now serves a broader constituency of journalists, including more online journalists, freelancers, and stringers who work with little to no institutional support. CPJ responds to a greater range of threats to free expression, from physical assault and imprisonment to cyber-attacks and electronic surveillance. CPJ's Internet Advocacy Program, established only two years ago, has already demonstrated considerable impact. CPJ has established confidential channels of communication with leading companies to resolve emergency cases involving online journalists and bloggers. The program provides training and advice to online journalists, and helps raise awareness among media and activist communities about the critical importance of data security. CPJ is strengthening its Journalist Security Program in response to the greater demand for its expert advice. This year CPJ launched a fully updated version of the Journalist Security Guide to help a new generation of journalists navigate the dangers of reporting. CPJ has dramatically scaled up emergency aid to journalists at risk. In 2011, CPJ's Journalist Assistance Program aided a record number of 172 journalists. CPJ helps journalists pay for urgent medical treatment, fund legal defense, and flee the threat of murder or arrest. In 2011, the organization carried out a successful pilot project in East Africa, working with partners to expand service delivery and develop pro-active strategies to help journalists at risk. CPJ expanded its global reach in 2011. Its network of correspondents includes team members in Mexico City, Bogot, So Paulo, Moscow, Istanbul, Abuja, Nairobi, and Bangkok. CPJ has advocacy representatives in London and Brussels. A wider international presence enables CPJ to respond quickly and effectively to press freedom emergencies, intervene directly with local authorities responsible for abuses, and work with local groups on projects to improve protections for journalists. The overarching goal is to ensure that CPJ is more visible, more influential, and more effective in its support for individual journalists and free media worldwide. The emerging ecosystem for international newsgathering is diverse but also extremely vulnerable on multiple fronts. Expanded press freedom advocacy is needed to ensure that people have access to the information they need to claim fundamental rights, pursue sustainable livelihoods, and hold government leaders accountable. CPJ's strategic plan provides a roadmap for ensuring that CPJ will continue to lead that effort in the years ahead. CPJ works to defend the right of journalists around the world to report news without interference or fear of reprisal. CPJ believes that free media play a crucial role in informing the public and nurturing healthy civil societies. CPJ's high profile enables the organization to shine an international spotlight on press freedom abuses and build pressure for reforms. Journalists have told CPJ that its advocacy efforts helped secure their release from prison, forced officials to back down from efforts to intimidate them into silence, and literally saved their lives.
