CPJ's Internet Advocacy Program, established only two years ago, has already demonstrated considerable impact. CPJ has established confidential channels of communication with leading companies to resolve emergency cases involving online journalists and bloggers. The program provides training and advice to online journalists, and helps raise awareness among media and activist communities about the critical importance of data security. CPJ is strengthening its Journalist Security Program in response to the greater demand for its expert advice. This year CPJ launched a fully updated version of the Journalist Security Guide to help a new generation of journalists navigate the dangers of reporting. CPJ has dramatically scaled up emergency aid to journalists at risk. In 2011, CPJ's Journalist Assistance Program aided a record number of 172 journalists. CPJ helps journalists pay for urgent medical treatment, fund legal defense, and flee the threat of murder or arrest. In 2011, the organization carried out a successful pilot project in East Africa, working with partners to expand service delivery and develop pro-active strategies to help journalists at risk.
