Description Program Srvc AccomDescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxtGrants And AllocationsGrantsAndAllocationsAmt
SATELLITE WATER MONITORING: Collect and provide data to California Department of Fish and Wildlife Biologists on water source information received from satellite monitoring systems installed om Big Game Guzzlers. This data is used to determine when water hauling or guzzler repairs are needed to support the wildlife.$2,925
SATELLITE MONITOR REPAIR AND INSTALLATION: Purchase and install repair parts for satellite water monitor systems on Big Game water sources and report results to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Biologists. Three complete new satellite monitoring systems were purchased, two of which will be place on guzzler sites that a scheduled to be installed on the Marino Corps Base at 29 Palms in January 2019. A date for installation of the third system has yet to be determined; however, it is planned to be used at another guzzler site in the 29 Palms base, Due to military operations the base biologists can only allow access to perform this work a few days a year and the Base Commander must approve the work so scheduling is ofter a complex and time consuming process.$10,652
WATER HAULING TO BIG GAME GUZZLERS DURING THE CRUCIAL DRY SUMMER MONTHS: The Big Horn Sheep are dependent on the man made water sources due to the fact that natural water sources such as springs have been diminished by ground water pumping and other types of human consumption as well as record drought conditions in 2017. Highways and other developments have also disrupted the historical migration routes use by the Sheep to find water during the dry summer months. Although volunteers ofter use their own vehicles to haul water to remote guzzler locations, the South Interstate 40 Big Game Guzzler can only be filled from the collection site in the median between the East- and West-bound lanes of Interstate 40. This requires coordination with Cal-Trans and a local water delivery company to supply 4,000 gallons of water to the site. the drinker itself is downhill from the highway and placed in a specific location so as to eliminate the need for the Sheep to cross the highway to find water.$1,000
AREA CAPTAIN PROGRAM (this is an ongoing program so there are no direct expenses associated with this activity this year): Coordinate with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, US Bureau of Land Management, U S Forest Service, U S Park Service, California State Park Service and volunteers on various projects including installation, repair and maintenance of the Big Game guzzlers and natural springs. Conduct surveys and provide the results to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for the improvement of wildlife habitat. Coordinate with volunteer Area Captains to inspect and maintain over 48 Big Game guzzlers and various natural springs.
SHEEP SHEET NEWS LETTER: Print and distribute the Sheep Sheet News Letter that contains information on wildlife habitat improvement projects both past and future. It is distributed to members and volunteers$677
STATE LANDS COMMISSION / STATE SCHOOL LANDS: The Big Game Guzzler sites planned for State Land's School sites in the Mojave Desert is still a work in progress. However, o two and one half acre site with an existing guzzler has been leased by the organization and it will be monitored and maintained by volunteers with results being reported to Department of fish and Wildlife biologists. This site is located in the Granite Mountains in Riverside County.$7
REBUILD AGING CADY GUZZLER: The Cady Big Game guzzler was very old and the rain water collection system had been damaged by flash flood waters. Although most of the old Cady guzzler was removed by volunteers in 2017, the cement dam and foundations for the old tanks had to be removed to satisfy Bureau of Land Management restoration requirements. Heavy equipment was required to complete this task and a local contractor was brought was bought in to demolish and remove the old cement structures.$1,200
PURCHASE SIX NEW RAIN CATCHER WATER TANKS WITH BUILT IN DRINKERS: The organization designed a water storage tank that is ideal for use in the dessert. The tanks combined with a hypolon rain mate are designed to collect and store water with very minimal precipitation levels. The organization was adopted a plan to install these tanks wherever possible including new Guzzler sites as well and any existing sites where tank replacement is necessary. These tanks have no moving parts and require very little maintenance. Two of these tanks will be installed at the Creosote Project on the 29 Palms Marine Corps Base in January of 2019 and the four more are scheduled to be installed on the 29 Palms Base at the Catclaw and Fishhook guzzler sites as soon as the military training schedule allows and permission from the Base Commander is obtained by the on-site base biologist.$16,752
STATE LANDS COMMISSION / STATE SCHOOL LANDS: Around the turn of the 19th century, the entire State of California was surveyed and in every land township a parcel of land was set aside and control given to the State of California to be used for schools. Over 100 years have passed and some of the parcels of land have been surrounded by designated wilderness and can never be devloped or inhabited by man. Some of the remote wildneress are in habitat well suited for Big Horn Sheep and the Organization, in conjunction with the Department if Fish and Wildlife, developed a plan to lease from the State Lands Commission portions of the parcels for the purpose of installing Big Game Guzzlers. As a part of applicatiion process to lease these sections of land, a cultural resource study is required in order to make sure no cultural or historic sites or resources are disturbed. This is a complex process as all 70 proposed sites have to be visited and researched. The organization has contracted with Dr. Alan Garfinkel Gold of Bakersfield to perform this work and provide study results to the State Lands Commission application. Dr. Vernon C Bleich, Biologist and well documented authority of desert Big Horn Sheep was also contracted with to review and enhance Dr. Gold's findings prior to submitting the land use application to the State Lands Commission.$21,099
REPAIR THE FAY DEE BIG GAME GUZZLER: The Big Game Guzzlers are in remote locations and often exposed to harsh weather conditions. The Fay Dee guzzler is located in the mountains east of the Salton Sea and receives a lot of use by the sheep. This is one of the older systems and one tank and drinker box as well as much of the pipe and fittings had to be replaced in order to keep the older system in working order. This project was completed with new material and all volunteer labor.$1,145
MOJAVE NATIONAL PRESERVE WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN: The Mojave National Preserve has drafted a water management plan for water sources within the National Park Preserve. The Organization, in conjunction with the Wild Sheep Foundation, has contracted Biologist Dr. Vernon C. Bleich to analyze and provide comment to the National Preserve on the environmental impact as it pertains to the Big Horn Sheep use of these water sources. Comments are to be addressed to the Superintendent of the Preserve by July 19, 2018.$1,000
