Schedule D, Part III, Line 1Collections which were acquired mostly through donation since the University's inception are not reflected in the Statements of Activities or Statements of Financial Position. The insured value of these items was approximately $2, 545,000 as of June 30, 2018.
Schedule D, Part III, Line 4The University's permanent collection of works of art are mainly for teaching, research, and exhibition. Many pieces are identified and logged in the inventories or archives, and displayed in many places throughout the campus.
Schedule D, Part IV, Line 2bThe balance includes A) student tuition prepayments for the July/August summer term, B) funds on deposit for various student organizations, and C) charitable gift annuity obligations. Deposit amounts related to students include student tuition and housing deposits for subsequent academic terms. The university also holds these amounts in internally designated accounts. Student organizations deposit the funds to and request funds from their internal accounts through the university's normal receipting and accounts payable procedures. The balance also includes the university's obligation under three charitable gift annuities. Annual disbursements are made to the annuitants out of invested annuity funds.
Schedule D, Part V, Line 4The University's endowment provides revenue to support its mission. It consists of approximately 190 individual funds established for a variety of purposes, mostly for student scholarships. It includes donor-restricted funds, funds designated by the Board of Trustees, and pledges receivable. Net assets associated with endowment funds, including funds designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowments, are classified and reported based on the donor's intent. The Board of Trustees will designate endowment funds, absent of any donor-imposed restrictions. The University complies with Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA) to allocate the accumulations of earnings of these funds, and follows the Board of Trustees approved endowment spending policy.
Schedule D, Part X, Line 2The University has received a favorable determination letter from the Internal Revenue Service, stating that the University is exempt from federal income taxes under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) of 1986, as amended, except for income taxes pertaining to unrelated business income. The Financial Accounting Standards Board issued guidance that requires tax effects from uncertain tax positions to be recognized in the financial statements only if the position is more likely than not to be sustained if the position were to be challenged by a taxing authority. Management has determined there are no material uncertain positions that require recognition in the financial statements, and has properly not accrued any provision for income taxes for the University. There are no interest or penalties recognized in the Statements of Activities or Statements of Financial Position.
Schedule D, Part XI, Line 2dExpenses directly related to rental income: $160,303. Expenses directly related to fundraising: $197,899

ExplanationFounded in 1901 as St. Clara College in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin, home of the Sinsinawa Dominicans, Dominican University began as a women's college under the fundamental values that continue to guide us today-rigorous education, diversity of thought, a commitment to social justice, and close mentoring of students to enable them to make a positive difference in the world. In 1922, the institution relocated to its current location in River Forest, Illinois, where it was renamed Rosary College. The new college rapidly expanded its curriculum and reach over the next decades, establishing one of the nation's first study-abroad programs, launching graduate programs and becoming coeducational. To reflect its stature as a respected, comprehensive and modern university, the school was renamed Dominican University in 1997. Today, Dominican is a premier Catholic university that ranks among the top master's-level universities in the Midwest. While maintaining its core Catholic identity, the University enrolls and mentors students of all faith backgrounds. Living out the ideals of our founding sisters and those of Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, founding father of the Sinsinawa Dominicans, the University is committed to giving compassionate service and to participating in the creation of a more just and humane world. Gifts received from the Sinsinawa Dominican Order in Fiscal Year 2017-2018 was $72,625.ExplanationTxt
