SATELLITE WATER MONITORING: Collect and provide data to California Department of Fish and Wildlife Biologists and the Marine Corps Biologist at 29 Palms on water source information received from satellite monitoring systems installed om Big Game Guzzlers. This data is used to determine when water hauling or guzzler repairs are needed to support the wildlife.$3,827
SATELLITE MONITOR REPAIR AND INSTALLATION: The water monitor systems that have been installed on various big game guzzlers including those at the 29 Palms Marine Corps Base are in very remote locations and are powered by batteries charged by small solar panels, these batteries need to be replaced from time to time and other repairs are sometimes necessary. The material cost is generally minuscule compared to the volunteer travel time and labor hours that are required to access the remote locations and make the repairs.$225
WATER HAULING TO BIG GAME GUZZLERS DURING THE CRUCIAL DRY SUMMER MONTHS: The Big Horn Sheep are dependent on the man made water sources due to the fact that natural water sources such as springs have been diminished by ground water pumping and other types of human consumption as well as record drought conditions. Highways and other developments have also disrupted the historical migration routes use by the Sheep to find water during the dry summer months. Volunteers, in conjunction with the Department of Fish and Wildlife use their personal vehicles to haul water to these remote guzzler sites. Reimbursement for mileage use was paid to the volunteers under guidelines of a State of California grant given for this purpose. The big game guzzler ("BGG") sites included Newberry BGG, Cady 1 BGG, Cady 2 BGG, Theresa Spring BGG, Kerr BGG, Bear Claw BGG and Vermin BGG.$1,105
AREA CAPTAIN PROGRAM (this is an ongoing program so there are no direct expenses associated with this activity this year): Coordinate with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, US Bureau of Land Management, U S Forest Service, U S Park Service, California State Park Service and volunteers on various projects including installation, repair and maintenance of the Big Game guzzlers and natural springs. Conduct surveys and provide the results to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for the improvement of wildlife habitat. Coordinate with volunteer Area Captains to inspect and maintain over 48 Big Game guzzlers and various natural springs. There is often little expense associated with this program because dedicated volunteers absorb their own travel and other minor expenses.
SHEEP SHEET NEWS LETTER: Print and distribute the Sheep Sheet News Letter that contains information on wildlife habitat improvement projects both past and future. It is distributed to members and volunteers.$685
STATE LANDS COMMISSION / STATE SCHOOL LANDS: The Big Game Guzzler sites planned for State Land's School sites in the Mojave Desert is still a work in progress. However, o two and one half acre site with an existing guzzler has been leased by the organization and it will be monitored and maintained by volunteers with results being reported to Department of fish and Wildlife biologists. This site is located in the Granite Mountains in Riverside County.$125
CASTLE MINE SPRING REPAIR: Most all of the Big Game Guzzlers and improved spring sites are in very remote locations within the desert and can by damaged by the elements including erosion, flash floods or simple exposure to the extreme heat and cold of the Mojave Desert. The Castle Mine Spring was shallow and the existing box had become filled with silt and mud from hillside runoff. Volunteer from the society dug out the existing box and made the water collection are larger and deeper. they installed a new red wood spring box to better store the spring water and improve its' availability for Bighorn Sheep and other wildlife.$476
ORA BEL BIG GAME GUZZLER PROJECT: A complete new 3 tank big game guzzler was installed on the property of the equinox gold mine, San Bernardino County, CA. With the assistance of heavy equipment from the mine and a lot of volunteer labor a new three rain catcher tank system with built in drinkers was installed, it included a large Hypalon mat to collect the rain water and funnel it into the tanks. The site was covered over with naturla earth and rock and blends in with the existing landscape.$14,695
ACACIA BIG GAME GUZZLER: Organization volunteers working in conjunction with Staff Biologists at the 29 Palms Marine Corps Base are preparing to install another complete new big game guzzler with in grounds tanks and satellite monitor. The project is scheduled to take place January 3, 2020, through January 6, 2020, but preparation has already begun, including many hours of boots on the ground inspection to locate the proper site for the installation, the acquisition of materials, excavating equipment, camp site locations, etc. Planning and logistics are key to working on the Marine Base, as both the live and emergency ordinance drop locations must be shut down in order for this work to be done. The Base only shuts down the facilities a few days per year so planning is of the utmost importance.$11,428
OLD DAD BGG RE-BUILD: The Old Dad BGG was original constructed in 1975 and although three the three tanks were replaced in the early 1990's, the tanks have become cracked and leaking due to extreme weather conditions. This is perhaps one of the most remote BGG in the water for wildlife system. It is a one and one-half mile hike up a very steep trail that is a hard climb for even the most experienced hikers. Organization volunteers working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Biologists and employees of the National Park Service at the Mojave National Preserve drafted a plan to rebuild the guzzler. This plan includes replacing the three existing 2,000 gallon tanks with new 3,000 gallon tanks. This precipitated the need to raise hundreds of feet of the pipe that comes from the rain water collection dam to line up with the new larger, taller tanks. The height of the rock and cement dam was raised to improve water collection and the old steel drinker box was replaced with a new stainless steel drinker box as well as replace all of the piping from the tanks to the drinker. This project took several months to complete staring in September of 2019 with the staging of equipment at the site, the main part of the work too place October 3rd though October 6th with over 20 people in attendance. All of the tools, pipe and tanks had to be brought and delivered to the work site by helicopter. All of the discarded material including the old tanks were also removed by helicopter. As soon as the new tanks were installed and the plumbing to the drinker was complete, the helicopter began flying water to the site and by the end of the weekend, the three tanks held 7,000 gallons of water ready for the wildlife to use. Most of the material and helicopter air time was funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. There was some work left to be completed in the future such as securing all of the new 4" fill pipes to the rock canyon and this will be completed in early 2020 and by volunteer labor as it becomes available.THIS PROJECT WAS FINALLY COMPLETED IN MAY OF 2020 WITH STEEL STRAPS SECURING THE REMAINING PIPES COMING FROM THE DAM TO THE TANKS.$145
RIDGE BGG PROJECT: A complete new 2 rain catcher tank and rain mat system including the built in drinkers was installed at the Mitsubishi Mine site in San Bernardino County, CA. On May 5th with help from the mine staff and society volunteers a complete new two tank with built in drinker system was installed. The mine biologists and their staff will provide most of the maintenance as well as water hauling when need for this guzzler. Over the years the Mitsubishi Mine environment group has been very helpful in assisting the society with improving and maintaining habitat for Bighorn Sheep int he areas where they operate.$9,628
