ExplanationSchedule F, Part I, Line 2: The American Society of Hematology (ASH) has many award programs that are available to individuals outside the United States, and as a result, our procedures to monitor grants outside the U.S. vary by the grant program. In general, participants must complete a first year evaluation form and an award completion evaluation form that provides the Society with updates on participants' progress during the award period. In addition to the evaluations, participants are also required to submit a final research summary report and a final financial report, on institution letterhead, detailing how the funds were used. The final progress report and financial report must be submitted within 60 days after the completion of the project. Any unused funds must be returned to ASH at the time the financial report is submitted. Participants and their institutions are made aware of ASH's regulations at the time the award is accepted. For those that do not comply with the rules, ASH reserves the right to withhold remaining funds and/or temporarily suspend the institution from receiving other grants the Society offers until the institution is in good standing.Explanation

General Explanation GeneralExplanation (7 entries)

IdentifierIdentifierExplanationExplanation
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6The American Society of Hematology has a membership base that has the authority to elect the members of the executive committee of the governing board. See 990 Part VI, question 7A for a description of this process.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7aThe American Society of Hematology (ASH) has a formal process to identify and select elected members of its Executive Committee. A call for nominations for leadership positions is posted on the ASH Web site year round and is included in various communication venues. Nominations submitted are added to the pool of nominations maintained at ASH Headquarters. The Nominating Committee meets each summer at ASH Headquarters to select at least two ballot candidates plus alternate(s) for each vacant office for Vice President, Councillor, Secretary, and Treasurer. (Succession of the Vice President to President-Elect, and in turn to President, is automatic. Councillors serve four-year terms arranged so that two will expire each year. The Secretary and Treasurer serve four-year terms each; the terms are arranged so they will not expire in the same year.) Afterwards, the Nominating Committee Chair contacts the final leadership candidates to detail the responsibilities of the position(s), determine any potential conflicts of interest, and share the schedule of Executive Committee meetings (he/she contacts alternates if necessary); he/she then confirms acceptance of nomination with staff. The Executive Director follows up with candidates to reinforce the obligations of service. In August, staff collects the bio-sketches and photos from the leadership candidates to send to the election vendor for ballot preparation and mailing to membership (by August 15). Staff e-mails the Executive Committee the slate of candidates (on August 31st or last business day before start of election).
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The form 990 is completed by the independent auditors using the audited financial results. The form is then reviewed by the Director of Finance and then reviewed and ultimately signed by the Executive Director. After the Executive Director signs the 990 form, it is sent to the Executive Committee via email for review. The Executive Committee members are expected to review the form, and if any comments or questions arise from the review, they will be placed on the agenda of the next Executive Committee Meeting. This procedure is specifically enumerated on the list of Executive Committee duties, and is discussed during our Executive Committee orientation meetings.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cThe American Society of Hematology (ASH) is dedicated to advancing the specialty of hematology. To accomplish this mission, ASH provides support for a variety of activities in the areas of research, education, training, and advocacy. The integrity of ASH and the activities it undertakes depends on the avoidance of conflicts of interest, or even the appearance of conflicts, by the individuals involved with those activities. Appropriate disclosure forms must be completed by anyone involved in ASH activities: committee members, annual meeting organizers and speakers, program planners for CME programs, and/or anyone involved in Blood and other ASH publications. As an ACCME-approved provider, ASH fully complies with the CME rules regarding meeting program design and speaker disclosure. The ASH Conflict of Interest Policy requires disclosure of any financial or other interest that might be construed as resulting in an actual, potential, or apparent conflict. This form must be submitted whether or not there is anything to disclose.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15PHILOSOPHY: The American Society of Hematology (ASH) strives to be a high performance organization in which excellence is actively recognized and rewarded. We offer a total compensation program that includes competitive salaries and benefits. ASH believes that excellent work performance contributes directly to organizational success and should largely determine employee compensation and career advancement. ASH also believes that an employee's contribution to organizational success can be measured through an individual's performance, knowledge, competencies and experience. As such, it seeks to reward employees who consistently demonstrate a commitment to achieving high standards in all of these areas. ASH's compensation philosophy has three primary objectives: To be internally equitable. That is, provide a salary range for every position that reflects its value compared to all other positions in the organization. To be externally competitive. That is, provide salary ranges, benefits offerings and a work environment, that are competitive in the marketplace so the organization can attract and retain qualified employees vital to organizational success. To be motivating. That is, provide the opportunity for future pay based on an employee's individual work performance, commitment to constant learning and continuous improvement, development of job related competencies, and experience. ASH has a compensation program that meets these objectives and provides: -Is equitable, flexible, understandable, and administratively feasible. -Provides pay levels that are comparable to and competitive within the respective employment markets. -Is compliant with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations. -Contains policies and practices without regard to age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status. -Provides opportunity for employees to enhance their compensation through annual performance reviews and related merit pay adjustments, career development, and promotion. -Integrates with all human resources programs. -Is flexible and responsive to future marketplace changes consistent with the mission, vision, culture and resources of the organization. SALARY MANAGEMENT METHODOLOGY Market Salary Reviews To ensure that ASH salaries are appropriately aligned with the market on a continual basis, a market salary review is conducted annually by Nonprofit HR Solutions (NPHRS), an independent human resources consulting firm. The annual market review consists of an analysis of market data pulled from multiple salary surveys, including: -Cordom Associates, Salary Survey of Nonprofit Organizations -HRA-NCA Survey -PRM Consulting, Not-for-Profit Management Compensation Survey -Total Compensation Solutions, Not-for-Profit Compensation Survey Considerable focus is given to organizations that are similar to ASH in terms of size, budget, and mission. Through this review, we are able to make a determination regarding shifting salary ranges to align with changes in the external market (inflation/cost of living, etc.). General merit increase targets are also determined annually based on information provided during the annual market review and the organizations budget. Periodically a comprehensive market salary review is conducted by NPHRS. This comprehensive review includes: -Collecting and analyzing job content data (i.e., duties, responsibilities, and work requirements) on covered positions -Benchmarking total compensation (base salary plus other cash compensation) levels and practices using various survey sources -Comparing how ASH's cash compensation compares with market pay rates for similar positions -Reviewing findings, observations, and conclusions Salary Management Approval Process - Executive director - to attract and retain stellar talent in this top executive position, ASH periodically assesses market salary trends for this role. This includes a comprehensive market salary review conducted by NPHRS and Association Strategies, Inc. every three years; this benchmarking includes an assessment of salaries and benefits of other non-profit medical association chief executives with comparable budget, staff size, and mission. Results of these market reviews are presented by NPHRS and Association Strategies to the Board of Directors, which discusses these data, considers the performance of the executive director, and sets a salary aligned at least with the mean of the market. Executive compensation for the Executive Director is established by contract between the Board of Directors and the Executive director which is typically renegotiated every three years. Executive compensation for the Executive director is determined by the Board of Directors and confirmed in a fully executed contract signed by the President of the Board and the executive director.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19The governing documents and financial statements are available upon request. The conflict of interest policy is located on the organization's website.
Form 990, Part XI, Line 2cthe organization has designated an investment and audit committee that assumes responsibility for the oversight of the audit of its financial statements and the selection of an independent accountant.
