Mission DescriptionATLANTIC THEATER COMPANY IS THE AWARD-WINNING OFF-BROADWAY THEATER FOUNDED IN 1985 BY DAVID MAMET AND WILLIAM H. MACY THAT PRODUCES GREAT PLAYS SIMPLY AND TRUTHFULLY UTILIZING AN ARTISTIC ENSEMBLE. THE STORY OF A PLAY AND THE INTENT OF ITS PLAYWRIGHT ARE AT THE CORE OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS. THE PLAYS IN THE ATLANTIC REPERTORY, FROM BOTH NEW AND ESTABLISHED PLAYWRIGHTS, ARE BOLDLY INTERPRETED BY TODAY'S FINEST THEATER ARTISTS AND RESONATE WITH CONTEMPORARY AUDIENCES.Producing great plays is only half of Atlantic's mission. Atlantic perpetuates our technique to students thru the Atlantic Acting School. Founded in 1983, the School's methodology is based on a specific creative approach known as Practical Aesthetics, whicH emphasizes practical steps for making theater, respectful working relationships, the story of the play and intent of its playwright. The School offers conservatory and undergraduate training in addition to in-school arts education programs.MissionDescription

DescriptionAtlantic operates one of the most renowned and rigorous acting schools in New York City. The Atlantic Acting School is comprised of an undergraduate drama program taught in conjunction with New York University, a conservatory program with classes in New York, Los Angeles, and Vermont, and after-school and summer programs for children and teens. The School teaches approximately 156 full-time NYU students, 58 full-time conservatory students, 296 part-time professional students, and 306 school-age children. Atlantic also serves thousands of students from close to 30 New York City public schools through its arts education programs. These programs introduce many students to theater for the first time and give them the opportunity to express themselves creatively. Most importantly, they give children the self-discipline, professional work habits, and analytical tools to succeed both on and off-stage. In Atlantic's Students and Educators Series, students receive tickets to an age-appropriate Atlantic production, a pre-show classroom visit with teaching artists, a study guide, and a post-show discussion with the play's cast. Atlantic's arts education programs are integrated with academic curriculum and comply with the New York City Board of Education's Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Theater. Additionally, Atlantic asks all participating classroom teachers to complete an assessment survey after each visit. This helps Atlantic evaluate the impact of the program and collect demographic information about participating students.Atlantic presents two Atlantic for Kids productions annually. These children's plays are noted for their exciting blend of language, humor, and spectacle. At only $7 per ticket, they are affordable arts opportunities for thousands of parents and children across the city and play an important part in Atlantic's arts education programs. The 2009-10 Atlantic for Kids season began with a lively musical adaption of No Dogs Allowed! - which is based on the children's book by Sonia Manzano. The company also presented Books Cook! - a retelling of about a dozen children's books in entertaining, interwoven vignettes conceived, composed, and directed by Liz Swados.Description

DescriptionEach season, Atlantic produces 3-4 plays at our 182-seat Mainstage Theater on West 20th Street. We are widely recognized for the consistent quality and scope of these productions which include world and New York premieres, modern adaptations of classic plays, and international co-productions. Many Mainstage productions are selected based on the strengths of Atlantic's ensemble, which consists of 41 artists who've worked with us multiple times and share a commitment to our mission and aesthetic approach. As a result, our Mainstage productions are distinguished by skillful acting and compelling, straight-forward design concepts. The 2009-10 Mainstage season began with a New York premiere of Two Unrelated Plays by David Mamet: Keep Your Pantheon & School, directed by Neil Pepe and featuring Atlantic ensemble members Steven Hawley, Jordan Lage, Rod McLachlan and Todd Weeks. For the second Mainstage the Atlantic produced the New York premiere of the Abbey Theatre production of Sam Shephard's play Ages of the Moon, directed by Jimmy Fay and starring Stephen Rea and Sean McGinley. The third Mainstage production of the season was the American premiere of Moira Buffini's Gabriel directed by David Esbjornson featuring Patricia Connolly, Lisa Emery, Zach Grenier, Lee Aaron Rosen, Samantha Soule and Libby Woodbridge. In addition to these three productions, Atlantic's members were able to purchase discounted tickets for the Broadway production of Martin McDonagh's A Behanding in Spokane. The base of the Atlantic's audience in 2009-10 consisted of 4,365 members who paid a modest membership fee and were able to buy tickets at a low price ($25-$35). In addition, Atlantic made low cost tickets available through a $10 ticket program, the Theater Development Fund, student discounts, senior citizen centers, and other community organizations. Since formally launching its Stage 2 New Play Development and Production Program in 2003, Atlantic has become an important home for artists developing new work. Each season, the company presents two fully-realized productions at Stage 2, its 98-seat, state-of-the-art black box theater on West 16th Street. Atlantic also provides emerging, mid-career and established writers with a full roster of programs to help them prepare new work for production, including readings, workshops, and commissions. The first show of the 2009-10 Stage 2 season was the World Premiere of OOHRAH! by Bekah Brunstetter, directed by Evan Cabnet, with Cassie Beck, Sami Gayle, Darren Goldstein, JR Horne, Jennifer Mudge, Lucas Near-Verbrugghe and Maximilian Osinski. In June 2010, Atlantic presented the World Premiere of Dusk Rings a Bell by Stephen Belber, directed by Sam Gold and starring Paul Sparks and Kate Walsh. In addition to its productions, Atlantic presented 14 developmental readings of new plays at Stage 2 and produced Latino Mixfest, a three-day new play festival featuring readings of plays by Latino writers from across the country. Atlantic also awarded a playwrighting commission to Afro-British writer Roy Williams.Description
