WE PROVIDED INFORMATION AND REFERRAL TO 1,725 PERSONS THIS YEAR THROUGH PHONE, E-MAIL AND ATTENDANCE OF OVER 22 RESOURCE FAIRS IN THE COMMUNITY. WE ALSO PROVIDED ONE TO ONE ASSISTANCE/INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PROGRAM REVIEW TO 72 FAMILIES. THIS PROCESS TAKES BETWEEN 6-8 HOURS OF STAFF TIME, BUT HELPS FAMILIES UNDERSTAND THE EXTENSIVE PAPERWORK INVOLVED TO DOCUMENT THE SERVICES AND SUPPORT PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. WE ALSO PROVIDED TRAINING TO 1,270 PARENTS, EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ON VARIOUS DISABILITY ISSUES IN OUR OFFICE, IN THE COMMUNITY AND THROUGH OUR KATY SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT CONFERENCE. IN ADDITION TO THE PARENT CONFERENCE, WE HAD THREE OTHER FAMILY EVENTS TO ENCOURAGE NETWORKING WITH OTHERS. OUR MONTHLY EDIGEST OF COMMUNITY EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE GREATER HOUSTON FOR FAMILIES/CHILDREN WITH DISABILTIES IS DISTRIBUTED TO OVER 1,400 IN THE COMMUNITY AND OUR QUARTERLY PRINT NEWSLETTER IS DISTRIBUTED TO OVER 700. OUR FAMILY TO FAMILY NETWORK WEBSITE WAS UPDATED BY A GROUP OF STUDENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON MIS PROGRAM AND RECEIVED OVER 630,000 HITS THIS YEAR. WITH THESE SERVICES, MORE FAMILIES ARE BETTER ABLE TO NAVIGATE THE SPECIAL EDUCATION SYSTEM AND ENSURE THAT THEIR CHILDREN RECEIVE THE SUPPORT AND SERVICES NEEDED TO GET AN EDUCATION. BY RECEIVING A GOOD EDUCATION, CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES WILL BE ABLE TO ADVANCE TO POST SECONDARY EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT OR INDEPENDENT LIVING AND REACH THEIR OWN DREAMS. | Description |
