| Mission Description | To provide expert, compassionate care for individuals and families living with progressive, serious illness at the end of life;serve the community with a commitment to excellence, sensitivity to cultural diversity, enthusiasm for innovation and without regard to age, race, religion, sexual preference or ability to pay; commit to sound business practices and ethical decision-making; and shape societal attitudes and behaviors about end of life care. VNSNY Hospice Care shares this mission of charity and public benefit with VNSNY and its related 501(c)(3) corporations and receives significant assistance from VNSNY for its programs. This assistance includes grants of philanthropic dollars (monies from donors and from VNSNY's own reserves) for its charitable initiatives. | Description | VNSNY Hospice Care provides services at home and in nursing homes for people who are at the end of life. VNSNY Hospice Care teams - nurses, social workers, home health aides, chaplains, physicians and volunteers - work together with the patient, family, and the patient's physician to help achieve comfort and provide support to patients and families. In 2010, VNSNY Hospice Care provided care to over 4,250 patients and offered bereavement support services (support groups, telephone support, individual counseling) to over 2,900 hospice family members, and nearly 1,200 individuals in the community. The Shirley Goodman Himan Brown Hospice Residence provided homelike apartments with housekeeping and 24-hour staffing by a VNSNY nurse to 85 individuals in 2010, bringing them peace in their final days. In 2010, VNSNY Hospice Care acquired Pax Christie Hospice, which serves Staten Island, and thus it is now the only hospice to serve all five boroughs of New York City. VNSNY Hospice Care launched the Pediatric Palliative Care Program in Brooklyn in 2009. The program provides the psychosocial, spiritual and bereavement care that is critical for these children and their families.
