Activity Or Mission DescriptionThe New Teacher Project has recruited or trained approximately 43,000 teachers and worked with more than 200 districts in 31 states. These teachers have influenced an estimated 7 million students, from Bedford Stuyvesant in Brooklyn to the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. A 2007 study by the Urban Institute credited TNTP's NYC Teaching Fellows program for the "remarkable narrowing in the gap in teacher qualifications between high- and low-poverty schools" in New York City. Meanwhile, TNTP's acclaimed studies of the policies and practices that affect the quality of the teacher workforce -- most recently including The Widget Effect (2009) and Teacher Evaluation 2.0 (2010) -- have influenced federal education policy and inspired reform efforts across the country.ActivityOrMissionDescription

DescriptionTEACHING FELLOWS PROGRAM:In more than 18 cities nationwide, The New Teacher Project's highly selective Teaching Fellows programs transform accomplished career changers and high-achieving college grads into dedicated teachers, diversifying local teacher talent pipelines and bringing great teachers to the students who need them most. In 2010, Teaching Fellows programs drew nearly 36,000 applications nationwide, and accepted only 9 percent of applicants, comparable in selectivity to top U.S. universities. 83% taught high--need subjects; 78% taught in high- poverty (Title I) schools; and 37% are people of color.Description

DescriptionTRAINING AND CERTIFICATION:The New Teacher Project's (TNTP) Training and Certification programs pioneer new ways of preparing effective teachers for high-need schools. For the past three years, a state value-added study of Louisiana's teacher preparation programs has given TNTP the highest possible rating for teacher effectiveness in four content areas, and has indicated that teachers certified by TNTP outperformed new and experienced teachers in these areas. During 2010, over 1,300 teachers were trained through TNTP's programs in six jurisdictions -- California, Louisiana, Maryland, Texas, Rhode Island, and the District of Columbia.Description

DescriptionOTHER PROGRAM SERVICES:Policy:Through non-partisan, data-driven analysis, The New Teacher Project (TNTP) identifies the policy barriers that prevent poor and minority children from getting fair access to effective teachers. TNTP makes its results public and then strategically advocates for reforms designed to help districts and states generate breakthrough gains in student performance. In 2010, TNTP published nine reports, inspiring 341 citations in news articles, and the pursuit of teacher effectiveness reforms by 8 districts and states. Intensive engagement with both Houston and New York helped both districts increase the rigor of tenure decisions, and four states engaged TNTP to design new teacher evaluation systems and a human capital strategy. Total program expenses (Policy): $2,914,838; Program Revenue (Policy): $1,219,427Teacher Quality Innovations:The New Teacher Project (TNTP) Teacher Quality Innovations program develops and executes innovative pilot projects that further the organization's commitment to sourcing, training, certifying and retaining highly effective teachers. In 2010, Teacher Quality Innovations built 11 new models to ensure teacher effectiveness is at the core of all decisions made by a district. TNTP also began a pilot with Denver Public Schools to recommend certification for all Denver alternate route teachers based on student growth, and helped the Recovery School District of Louisiana (RSD) roll out and implement a new teacher evaluation system.Total program expenses (TQI): $2,009,423; Total prgram revenue (TQI): $520,000Description

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The New Teacher Project's Board of Directors (the "Board") approved formation of an Audit & Finance Committee (the "Committee") and appointed an existing Board member as a member of the Committee at a meeting held on January 23, 2008. Effective June 26, 2008,the Board adopted the Committee Charter, ratified, confirmed & approved the appointment of the Committee member and appointed 2 additional members. TNTP has its Form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm and has established the following review process to ensure that the information reported is complete and accurate. When the Form 990 has been prepared, reviewed by management and is ready to be filed with the Internal Revenue Service, it's submitted electronically to the Committee for review and approval. The Committee-approved 990 is electronically transmitted and reviewed with members of the Board for any comments prior to its submission. The Board is provided with one week to review the prepared Form 990 and provide their comments. The CFO then reviews any comments, and works with the relevant staff and accounting firm to make any necessary changes. Each issue is documented and addressed until the return is finalized and approved for filing.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cThe New Teacher Project ("TNTP") distributes an annual conflict of interest policy to directors, officers, committee members, and key employees and require they sign the certification saying they have read, understood and agree to comply with the policy. The policy requires that all individuals have a duty to disclose to the directors and members of committees with board delegated powers considering the proposed transaction or arrangement the existence of any financial interest and all material facts in connection with any actual or possible conflict of interest. After the disclosure of a financial interest and all material facts, and after any discussion with the interested person, such person shall leave the board or committee meeting while the determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. The remaining board or committee members shall decide if a conflict of interest exists. The respondents are asked to sign and return the annual certification which affirms such person (i) has received a copy of the policy (ii) has read and understands the policy (iii) agrees to comply with the policy and (iv) understands that TNTP is a charitable organization and that in order to maintain its federal tax exemption it must engage primarily in activities which accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes. The signed conflict of interest policy is kept on file.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15The Executive Committee of the Board approves the CEO's salary and any bonus. For other positions, our Human Capital team establishes a salary scale based on pre-determined levels. Prior to posting any vacancy, Human Capital evaluates each position, defines its level to determine starting salary, and then adjusts it to be consistent with the employee's experience and qualifications. The CEO, with input from the leadership team, makes all bonus decisions for TNTP staff. The Human Capital team and the Executive Committee of TNTP's Board of Directors conduct regular market analyses to ensure that TNTP compensates its staff at competitive rates. During 2010, TNTP contracted an independent compensation consultant to do this analysis on select positions, including the CEO position. Data was collected directly from charter and national education non-profit organizations, from multiple compensation surveys specific to the non-profit industry, from 990 forms, and from large school districts. The study concluded that TNTP's salary bands are generally aligned with the market, and in some cases, salaries were below market. During September 2010, management announced changes to its compensation model for FY11 to better align compensation with the market. This market analysis was shared with the Executive Committee of the Board, and considered in their recommendation for CEO compensation.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19The New Teacher Project ("TNTP") makes its Form 990 available for public inspection as required under section 6104 of the Internal Revenue Code by posting it on www.guidestar.org. In addition, the Form 990, financial statements, conflict of interest policy, and its governing documents are available upon written request at 186 Joralemon Street, Suite 300, Brooklyn, NY 11201 or by calling the organization directly at (718) 233-2800.
Form 990, Part XI, Line 2c: Audit Committee (Selection of Accountant):TNTP has a committee that assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. This process did not change from prior year.
Form 990, Part VII, Section A and Schedule J Part II:Carol Sterlacci served in the position of Treasurer and CFO through March 8, 2009 and was previously listed on the prior year form 990 in that position. She later transitioned to the role of Partner, Financial Systems until the end of the fiscal reporting period.Former Officer:
