| Explanation | Committee for Children works actively with 14 organizations around the globe to foster the social and emotional development, safety and well-being of children through education. We have developed partnerships with organizations in Chile, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greenland, Iceland, Iraq (Kurdistan region), Japan, Lithuania, Norway, the Philippines, Sweden, Slovakia, and Turkey. Committee for Children provides each partner with capacity-building support, training and consultation to assist with their translation, cultural adaptation, pilot testing and distribution of our research-based, prevention education programs, Second Step and Talking about Touching. School children in each partner country are learning the social and emotional skills needed to resolve conflicts peacefully, develop empathy, manage emotions, solve problems, and stay safe from violence, bullying and abuse. | Program Services - Training and Implementation | Core - Part III, Line 4a | 2010-2011 Achievements 1. Online training and implementation support--Goal: To provide high-quality, efficient and accessible training and support to ensure successful implementation of our programs. The 4th edition Second Step Program includes a suite of user-friendly online resources and tools, including training, parent materials, evaluation tools, and videos. We also provided webinars and online seminars for administrators and teachers, and other school staff. 2. Implementation research--Goal: To identify barriers to high-quality implementation and develop and test tools for addressing barriers. With funding from the Raikes Foundation, we have been partnering with 3 high-needs middle schools in the Seattle/Tacoma area to conduct a qualitative study to identify barriers to adoption, implementation, and sustainability of Second Step: Student Success through Prevention. During this second year of the project, we have conducted observations, focus groups, and interviews with administrators and school staff, as well as piloting a variety of implementation support tools. We are partnering with several large school districts (Austin, TX and Allentown, PA) that are including the Second Step program as part of district-wide social and emotional learning initiatives aimed at increasing student success and reducing behavior problems. During this year we also convened a "Think Tank" of 30 leaders from 19 large school districts implementing Committee for Children's programs. Input and feedback from this group is being used to inform our outreach and implementation support resources and tools to better support the needs of diverse, large, urban school districts. 3. Program Evaluation-Goal: To partner with university researchers to conduct evaluations on Committee for Children's programs. Research and program evaluation partnerships include the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Wichita State University, and the University of Rochester Medical Center. |

Media outreach-Goal: To increase community awareness of social and emotional learning, bullying prevention, and child sexual abuse prevention through media partners. Committee for Children's Steps to Respect bullying prevention program was featured in Seattle-based CBS affiliate KIRO Television's one-hour documentary called Bullying: Breaking the Cycle. Along with other bullying prevention research and program experts, Committee for Children was invited to present at a Bullying Prevention Working Group meeting in Washington, DC including representatives from Facebook, Microsoft, Cartoon Network, Sesame Workshop, Google, MTV, and Proctor and Gamble. 2. Conferences, presentations, publications-Goal: To disseminate research findings on bullying prevention, social and emotional learning, and child sexual abuse prevention. Findings from the 33-school randomized control trial of the Steps to Respect program, conducted with generous funding from the Raynier Institute and Foundation, were submitted for journal publication by our evaluation partners at the University of Washington's Social Development Research Group. Findings were also presented at 3 national conferences. Committee for Children was a Platinum sponsor of the 2010 International Bullying Prevention Conference and sponsored 20 large school district representatives to attend the conference. |
| Program Services - PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT | Core - Part III, Line 4c | 2010-2011 Achievements 1. Program development-Goal: To support the ongoing design and maintenance of our core programs. During this year, Committee for Children released a comprehensive revision of the Second Step program for kindergarten through grade 5. This included the addition of cutting-edge new research, enhanced media and online components, and updated design and packaging. A series of music videos from the fourth and fifth grade program was one of two videos selected for the 2011 CINE Award for Professional Non-Fiction Division's Children's Education and Entertainment category. To supplement our evidence-based bullying prevention program, the Steps to Respect program, we launched 5 new online cyber-bullying lessons. 2. Product registration -Goal: To acquire customer data to support implementation. Committee for Children's programs now have the ability to be registered online with a unique number. Registration provides the teacher/counselor with access to a host of online resources, including an interactive teaching guide, program implementation guide, family letters that can be emailed to parents, and much more. When teachers register their curriculum, we know which programs are being taught in which schools, and by whom, allowing us to remain engaged with educators throughout their implementation. We also are able to use web analytics to inform enhancements to program development. 3. Partnership development-Goal: To build partnerships to expand Committee for Children's reach, impact, and effectiveness. As part of our International outreach, we have partners in 14 countries who are translating and distributing the Second Step program to schools in their respective countries. During the year we partnered with CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) to build legislative awareness and support for social and emotional learning as a critical element of educating the whole child. |
