| Primary Exempt Purpose | Advocates for Informed Choice (AIC) uses innovative legal strategies to advocate for the civil rights of children born with variations of reproductive or sexual anatomy. The mission of the organization is to engage parents, doctors, attorneys and intersex activists in strategy discussions; stimulate legal dialogue about the fundamental rights of children born with intersex conditions or DSDs; and employ traditional and non-traditional legal tools to ensure justice for children born with intersex conditions or DSDs. | Started Inter/Act, the first-ever youth leadership program for youth with intersex conditions and DSD. The program now has a steering committee of three, with nine additional participants signed up. This group, now in it's planning stage, will provide a platform to bring the voices of youth with intersex conditions or DSD to the broader community, through blogging, social media, viral videos, news articles, presentations, and more! | 0 | 5977 |
| AIC catalyzed three federal investigations of allegedly unethical research involving children with intersex conditions or DSD. We offered legal information and referrals to 12 intersex adults and 12 parents or youth. We assisted in two successful asylum claims for people with intersex conditions or DSD who had been persecuted in their home countries. We negotiated a historic apology to an intersex woman from the hospital that had performed genital surgery on her in infancy. We also insured that intersex/DSD concerns were represented in several important policy areas, including new definitions in the DSM V, implementation of the Prison Rape Elimination Act, international and NCAA rules for athletic competition, New York state policy for changing sex on birth certificates, Colorado medicare policies, and changes to the State Department's procedures for changing sex on passports. Finally, we consulted with the Department of Justice about ensuring that intersex/DSD concerns were addressed under existing anti-discrimination laws. | 0 | 4400 |
| Medical and Public Education - Published 7 articles in medical and bioethics journals and professional magazines, reaching over 60,000 readers. Provided legal and ethical consultation to 5 major hospitals regarding the rights of children with intersex conditions/DSD. | Leveraging resources - AIC maximizes the effect of our funding by leveraging resources. We run a virtual office, and in-kind donations of office space, legal services, travel expenses, graphic design, and other goods and services totaled $21,440 for the entire fiscal year 2010. We also made use of 7 law student interns, one youth intern, and several other volunteers. Organizational development accomplishments in 2010 also included establishing independent 501c3 status and more than quadrupling our contributions from individuals, from around $4,000/year to over $18,000 this year. | 0 | 0 |
