DescriptionInstructionDrexel is a comprehensive national research university dedicated to providing quality undergraduate, graduate and professional education featuring excellent academics, state-of-the-art technology and a focus on real-world learning and service.Drexel offers nationally accredited programs that meet the changing needs of society, including more than 70 bachelor's degree programs and more than 100 master's and doctoral programs. The University's mission encompasses a wide range of disciplines including medicine and law and serves traditional, adult and online students.Students at Drexel learn from faculty who are leaders on and off campus. Recent honors bestowed on faculty members include admission to the Institute of Medicine and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and election as the first president of the new International Society for Biofabrication. Faculty members also provided professional service including chairing committees on diversity and emergency health services for the American Public Health Association and serving on the Science Advisoty Board of Autism Sspeaks. Last year Drexel launched the Custom Studies Major, in which students in the Pennoni Honors College can work in close collaboration with faculty to develop their own individualized majors. Other new programs include a master's degree in environmental engineering focusing on sustainability and being developed jointly with Peking University Graduate School in Shenzhen, China. Drexel is re-imagining the role of a university library in ways that will impact libraries around the nation. The University established a Personal Librarian Program, in which each of Drexel's 2,600 freshmen is assigned to a librarian who will help them learn to access information, and this year developed a prototype Library Learning Terrace, the first of a series of library locations distributed throughout campus to connect students to service and information where they live and work. For more than 90 years, a Drexel education has augmented outstanding classroom learning with real-world professional experience through one of the nation's oldest, largest and most respected co-operative education programs. Despite an expected nationwide decline of almost 3 percent in co-op hires in 2010, Drexel continued to place 98 percent of participants in co-op positions. Another way that students learn by doing at Drexel is through the University's commitment to civic engagement. Drexel students, faculty and staff lead numerous service initiatives in our neighborhood, city and region as well as national efforts targeting education, health care and other key areas. New initiatives in the past year include the Public Service Fellowship Program in the Earle Mack School of Law, established to provide law graduates committed to public service with part-time, paid six-month positions at public interest organizations; and a partnership between the Construction Management program in Drexel's Goodwin College of Professional Studies and the ACE Mentor Program connecting high school students from economically challenged familiies to the construction industry while teaching them life and work skills. Student opportunities for service are expected to increase with Drexel's enhanced commitment to community-building in the nearby neighborhoods of Powelton Village and Mantua, announced in September 2010 by president John Fry. This wide-ranging commitment will include expanded partnerships with local public schools and the revitalization of a commercial corridor. For academic yer 2009-2010, undergraduate enrollment was 13,484, graduate enrollment was 7,189 and the number of degrees conferred were: Associate degrees - 26 Bachelors degrees - 2,734 Masters degrees - 1,741 Doctoral degrees - 297 Certificates and other - 91Description

DescriptionResearchDrexel researchers work across disciplines to increase the world's store of knowledge and translate that new knowledge into solutions with tremendous positive impact on society. The University's research enterprise continues to grow and attract great extramural support, with research activities representing approximately $75 million in direct expenditures. Our greatly increased academic comprehensiveness has led to many collaborative research initiatives, including the creation of cross-disciplinary institutes in important areas of research leadership for the University, such as nanotechnology, non-thermal plasma science and research and development of a broad array of technologies for application by the military and first responders. The number of cross-disciplinary research centers continues to grow with the new Center for Mobilities Research and Policy, promoting research that envisions and fosters alternative futures for mobility, and the Center for Labor Market Studies, providing labor market data for government, industry and research institutions. Drexel is specifically committed to translational research, rigorous academic work that tangibly translates into intellectual progress and social good. To that end, one of Drexel's most important research functions is to leverage seed funding from public or private nonprofit sources to gain addtional funding that moves research forward. Other promising lines of research undertaken by Drexel investigators and seeded with University funding include smart-grid technology, in which the University has partnered with a corporate innovator to serve as the test site for new management of energy distribution and utilization within a local area energy network; and the Human Cognition Enhancement Program, developing methodologies to enhance cognition and skilled motor performance in both normal and disabled individuals. During the 2009-2010 academic year, Drexel University received funding for the following grants: Federally-sponsored research - 470 grants State-sponsored research - 35 grants Local-sponsored contracts - 12 grants Private-foundation sponsored research - 146 grants Industry-sponsored research - 58 grantsDescription

This program is developed in conjunction with the Student Government Association. Line d - Mailings to Members, Legislators or the Public: In cases where legislation may or will affect the University, its subsidiaries or higher education in general, we make contact with legislators through mailings. These are personalized mailings rather than direct mail campaigns. Line g - Direct Contact with Legislators, their Staffs, Government Officials, or a Legislative Body: We have direct contact with our legislators, their staffs, and various government officials throughout the year via phone calls, written correspondence, and meetings. The frequency of contact depends on the issues at hand.Explanation

Discriminate Race ExplanationDrexel University was founded upon the principle of diversity as an educational goal and remains committed to that principle today. In 1892, noted financier, philanthropist, and advisor to U.S. Presidents, Anthony J. Drexel created the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry to provide higher education to men and women of the working class who were not welcome in the colleges and universities of that day. A.J.Drexel envisioned a learning environment in which young men and women would learn skills and acquire knowledge in subjects that would prepare them for rewarding careers. Drexel's co-operative education program encourages students to learn how to work together by placing them in real business settings that are increasingly diverse. We have embraced diversity because we know there is no other way to ensure our students are prepared for a diverse world. We will continue to honor our Founders' visions, creating a diverse student community as an essential part of our mission.DiscriminateRaceExplanation

Form 990, Part VIPart VI, Section B, line 16b Evaluation of Joint Venture Arrangements The University is in the process of implementing a policy for evaluating joint venture arrangements to insure that such arrangements are consistent with the University's tax-exempt mission.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11Form 990 is prepared by the Comptroller's Office and submitted to the Senior Vice President for Finance/Treasurer/Chief Financial Officer for review and signing. Prior to filing, Form 990 and all required schedules ultimately filed with the Internal Revenue Service were available to each member of the Board of Trustees for their review and comment.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cDrexel University's conflict of interest policy applies to all employees (whether a key employee or not), officers, and trustees of the university. The conflict of interest policy is intended to satisfy compliance requirements and guide University personnel in avoiding those situations that can result in a conflict of interest or commitment. The key to avoiding those situations that can result in a conflict of interest or commitment is to make constituents aware of what constitutes a conflict of interest and for them to disclose potential situations before the activity is undertaken. The format for the disclosure is for each employee, officer or trustee to complete a questionnaire annually. The completed questionnaire is submitted to the Human Resources Department in the case of employees and reviewed by the Office of the General Counsel. Completed questionnaires for officers and trustees are submitted directly to the Office of the General Counsel for review. After review a determination is made as to whether a conflict of interest exists and at what level. Those conflicts that are determined to be detrimental to the University are discussed with the employee and the employee is encouraged to terminate the activity. Employees who willingly or otherwise continue to violate the conflict of interest policy are subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension without pay, demotion or termination of employment. In the case of trustees, a conflict of interest questionnaire is mailed annually. Trustees are required to complete the questionnaire and disclose any interests in any corporation, partnership or other organization in which they own or control 5% or more of the entity. It is the policy of the University not to contract with or enter into a commercial relationship with any Trustee or corporation, partnership, proprietorship or other organization in which such Trustee has an interest as an officer, director, partner, employee, owner, or controlling stockholder.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15Drexel is committed to compensating its executive team at a fair and competitive level. To meet this goal, Drexel University's Human Resources Department conducted an executive compensation analysis in fall 2009 using the College and University Professional Association of Human Resources (CUPA) Survey and IRS Form 990 information as they relate to the University's peer groups. Positions included in the analysis were the President, Secretary, Treasurer, Senior Vice Presidents, Chief Information Officer and highly-paid Deans. Using the executive compensation analysis, a third-party advisor prepared a report and submitted the report to the Executive Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees (the Committee) along with certain performance criteria. The compensation analysis served as the basis for the Interim President's recommendations for University executives. The third-party advisor provided the Committee with a letter on the appropriateness of the decision-making process and reasonableness of the proposed compensation. All compensation was approved by the Executive Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees prior to becoming effective on January 1, 2010. The Interim President waived his compensation for the duration of his term.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19Drexel University makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public in a variety of ways. The conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available on its website, and its governing documents are available upon request.
