DescriptionHigh School Redesign - In fiscal 2010 EdWorks provided technical assistance under contract to transform or start-up schools in 16 districts in Michigan, New York, Ohio, Tennessee and Washington. Work focused on improving the education of more than 10,000 students. In all, EdWorks supported the development or expansion of 11 Early college High Schools in New York in partnership with the State University of New York; the transformation of seven urban high schools in Detroit and Knoxville; the transformation of a suburban high school in Ohio; and the start-up of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) high schools in Ohio and Washington. EdWorks continued to improve its transformation model with the development of a series of theme-based prototype school designs that move students firmly into the 21st century world of connected learning. These prototypes were developed in collaboration with five national content-area partners. The prototype designs may be applied in the transformation of an existing large high school or in the development of start-up, stand alone new schools. All prototype schools provide a rigorous, college and career-ready curriculum, with courses aligned to the new Common State Core Standards. Courses are designed to be taught in a very integrated way, organized around annual big ideas or themes. All schools are designed to be implemented in technology-rich environments. The national partners will help with teacher professional development and other supports. Prototypes include three STEM designs, a leadership institute, an innovation lab and schools focused on the social sciences and performing arts.Description

DescriptionNew Technology Network ("NTN") is a national school development organization that works with districts and communities to implement innovative high schools that prepare graduates for post-secondary paths. New Technology helps school stakeholders fundamentally rethink their approach to teaching and learning, empowering students to become the creators, leaders, and producers of tomorrow. New Technology Network continued its investments in capacity building to support the growing number of schools. A new version of the NTN Learning Management System, NTN Echo was introduced to all schools in July, 2010. An unprecedented number of new schools opened in the fall of 2010, bringing the total number of schools to 62. New Technology high schools are located in California, Ohio, South Dakota, Hawaii, New Mexico, Michigan, Georgia, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Louisiana and Texas.Description

DescriptionThe Strive Partnership Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky is focused on the success of children: every child, every step, from cradle to career. The Strive Partnership unites common providers around shared issues, goals, measurements and results, and then actively supports and strengthens strategies that work. Key outcomes for the year include the number of student outcomes trending in the right direction; collaborative action in the area of early childhood education and college access has contributed to these consistent improvements; funders in the region are aligning dollars behind collaborative action; and the Partnership was the only grantee awarded from the federal Social Innovation Fund to focus on taking local actions that have high impact to scale.Strive has drawn upon lessons in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, as well as other national sites, to develop a framework for building what is called the Cradle to Career Civic Infrastructure. Using this framework, Strive is now working nationally to build a network of communities committed to this work who will achieve two core goals:(1) Expedite the development of unique partnerships in communities across the country by facilitating knowledge sharing among Network members and(2) Establish recognized Cradle to Career Communities.Description

DescriptionIncluded in the other program services are Education Policy, Organizational Learning & Innovation, Grantmaking and Student Lending, described below:From July 2009 to June 2010, KnowledgeWorks provided research, best practices and information on key education issues in Ohio that helped policymakers and legislators make informed decisions to move the states education agenda forward. In August 2009, KnowledgeWorks launched a new program, Ohio Education Matters (OEM), a statewide public policy research effort focused on Ohio. OEM connects the dots between great innovations and those in the community who can make change. As a non-partisan program, OEM acts as a catalyst of education transformation by conducting research, advocacy, engagement and policy development that inspires others to make the system changes needed today to prepare Ohio's children for the future. During the year, KnowledgeWorks provided the State of Ohio significant expertise and support in its application to the U.S. Department of Education for competitive grant money through Race to the Top program. Ohio was ultimately successful in obtaining $400 million in federal funds to improve its education infrastructure and accelerate innovations, particularly in turning around persistently low-performing schools. In June 2010, KnowledgeWorks was asked by the governor and state superintendent to study K-12 education spending to look for efficiencies that could help provide more dollars in the classroom of all 1.8 million Ohio students at a time when the state expected to reduce its support for primary and secondary education. That study, funded by KnowledgeWorks, was called Ohio Smart Schools, and the work continued into the next fiscal year.KnowledgeWorks' Organizational Learning and Innovation (OLI) team continued conducting the Transformational Dialogue for Public Education initiative in Ohio and North Carolina. This initiative brings state leaders into systemic, state-level conversations that fundamentally re-conceive public education. Participants take part in broad-based, long-term dialogues in which they suspend their thinking about their own organizational objectives and focus instead on the common good of educating their state's citizens. Twenty-nine core stewardship team members are participated in Ohio, and 16 core stewardship team members participated in North Carolina. OLI continued to engage people in planning for the future of learning by distributing, conducting presentations on, and designing experiences to promote engagement with its second future forecast created with the Institute for the Future, the 2020 Forecast: Creating the Future of Learning (http://www.futureofed.org). The team distributed 18,233 copies. In addition, it conducted twenty presentations, workshops, and trainings for a variety of education stakeholders, ranging from local school districts to higher education institutions to state, regional, and national education nonprofits. It also worked intensively with three school districts in the Cincinnati, Ohio, region to explore the implications of the 2020 Forecast for 21st century learning and launched Learning2025, a learner-centered engagement process, with Collective Invention at Grantmakers for Education's April 2010 Innovation Briefing.Lastly, OLI created several publications associated with the future of learning. With McREL, it authored two policy briefs around the future of learning: Amplified Policymaking (http://www.futureofed.org/pdf/taking-action/PolicyBrief3.pdf) and Crafting Policy for Emerging Educational Futures (http://www.futureofed.org/pdf/taking-action/PolicyBrief4.pdf). In addition, it published 65 posts to its associated blog, The Future of Education Is Here (http://blog.futureofed.org). The team also sponsored and contributed to the October 2009 issue of the National Staff Development Councils The Learning System newsletter for district leaders. The Grantmaking program provided approximately $1.4 million of grant funding to 85 organizations. The Student Lending Programs continued its work to help students and their families plan for how to pay for college. Student LendingWorks, KnowledgeWorks's subsidiary, originated approximately $38.7 million in student loans representing 8,000 borrowers at Ohio Universities and Colleges. Loan originations from inception through 6/30/10 total $125 million. SLW has provided more than 16,000 students and their families with financial aid guidance, regardless of their eligibility for loans, in order to help them to make an informed decision regarding financing post-secondary education.Description

Part X:Description of Uncertain Tax Positions Under FIN 48:On July 1, 2009, the Foundation adopted Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) 740, Income Taxes (formerly known as FASB Interpretation No. 48, Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes), which prescribed a comprehensive model for how an organization should measure, recognize, present, and disclose in its financial statements uncertain tax positions that an organization has taken or expects to take on a tax return. The Foundation has analyzed tax positions taken for filing with the Internal Revenue Service and all state jurisdictions where it operates. The Foundation believes that income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse affect on the Foundation's financial position, statement of activities, or cash flows. Accordingly, the Foundation has not recorded any reserves or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain income tax positions at June 30, 2010. In the event interest and penalties accrued on unrecognized tax benefits, the Foundation would recognize such amounts as a component of income tax expense.
Part XI, Line 8 - Other Adjustments:Distribution of Investments from Exempt Subsidiary - KWI: 14553635. Interest Earned on Restricted Funds: 2112. Unrealized Gain on Interest Rate Swap Agreement: 442539.
