DescriptionMusical Performances - See Schedule OIn 2011 Caramoor presented a total of 49 musical performances throughout the year to 22,955 audience members in venues throughout our campus, including the 1,700-seat Venetian Theater, the 500-seat Spanish Courtyard, the 200-seat Music Room of the historic Rosen House, the Sunken Garden, Tapestry Hedge, Picnic Lawn, and Friends' Field. While maintaining our commitment to the core classical repertoire, including symphonic, opera and chamber music, we also presented a wide array of other genres, including jazz, Latin American music, and American roots music, as well as programs designed for families with young children. The 66th annual International Music Festival, which ran from June 25 to August 7 and included 39 concerts, was the highlight of our musical offerings. It opened with a performance of Gilbert & Sullivan's operetta HMS Pinafore, by the Orchestra of St. Luke's, in residence at Caramoor since 1979, under the baton of Will Crutchfield, Caramoor's Director of Opera. Maestro Crutchfield also conducted two performances of William Tell, Rossini's final opera, on July 9 and 15.Classical music remained at the heart of Caramoor's festival offerings, including chamber performances by the young pianist Michael Brown with Caramoor Rising Star Arnaud Sussmann, the Caramoor Virtuosi ensemble, the Emerson String Quartet, and the Jasper String Quartet, the 2010-11 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence. In addition, Caramoor's resident Orchestra of St. Luke's performed with violinists Sarah Chang and Jennifer Koh, and former Caramoor Rising Star and cellist Alisa Weilerstein, as featured soloists. On July 2 we presented Caramoor's first American Roots Music Festival, a day-long celebration of American music organized by producer and curator Maggi Landau, which included gospel, blues, country, folk, and bluegrass. The influential and innovative David Grisman headlined with his group, The David Grisman FolkJazz Trio. Other artists included Ollabelle, James Maddock, Sweetback Sisters, Brother Sun, and Spuyten Duyvil. In recent years we have significantly increased our programming for children and their families. The Dancing at Dusk series of informal, outdoor concerts, with dance instruction, included Brazilian, Irish, Greek, and Italian music. On July 3 we presented an Independence Day celebration with a symphonic pops concert and fireworks display. We also presented Star-Spangled Classics, a family concert on July 16 by Kaleidoscope, the Teaching Artists Ensemble of the New York Philharmonic. The summer festival closed with the 17th annual weekend of jazz produced and curated by Jim Luce. The Christian McBride Big Band headlined and additional artists included Renee Rosnes, Jason Moran, John Scofield, Fred Hersch, Robert Glasper, and Edmar Castaneda. We presented our third annual Fall Festival in 2011, which ran from September 23-25 and included 3 performances. Artists included the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Alan Gilbert with violinist Augustin Hadelich, Broadway singer Kelli O'Hara, and an ensemble of young artists participating in Caramoor's mentoring programs. We also presented 7 chamber music performances in the spring and fall in the Music Room of the historic Rosen House. The spring season included performances by the Vocal Rising Stars; the Jasper String Quartet, the 2010-11 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence; Midori, Nobuko Imai, Antoine Lederlin, and Jonathan Biss; Tanya Tompkins; the Benvenue Fortepiano Trio; and Joan Kwuon and Andre-Michel Schub. The fall season included the Linden String Quartet, the 2011-2012 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence.Description

DescriptionRosen House, Gardens and Estate - See Schedule ORosen House: The Rosen House is a Mediterranean Revival villa at the center of the Caramoor campus. In recognition of the unsurpassed quality and great quantity of European period rooms incorporated into the fabric of the house, Caramoor was recognized as nationally significant on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, a distinction that it shares with sites such as Vizcaya in Miami, FL and Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA. Built in the 1930s, it is an incomparable concert venue, a unique classroom for visiting schoolchildren, and a haven for the creative growth of young musicians. In 2011 Caramoor staff and volunteers continued to research a wealth of archival material in the house in order to develop new public programs and better understand Caramoor's founders, Lucie and Walter Rosen, their contributions to the arts, and the history of Caramoor as a performing arts center. We are looking forward to completing this process.During this research and re-evaluation period, which began in 2010, tours and the annual special exhibition have been suspended, but the Rosen House remained open and available to the public in 2011 through concerts in the Music Room and Spanish Courtyard, arts-in-education programs, and young artist training programs.Gardens and Estate: The 90-acre Caramoor campus, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places at the state-wide level of significance in 2001 and at the national level of significance in 2011, is comprised of four primary buildings - today known as the Rosen House, the Administration Building, the Gifford Residence, and the Diane Moss Education Center - as well as ancillary buildings and landscape features, gardens, lawns, and woodland areas. A central focus of the campus is the Venetian Theater, a tented, 1,700-seat venue.Fourty-five acres of the campus is deer-fenced and open to the visiting public, including the Sunken Garden, established in 1912; a Mediterranean Revival pavilion; an allee of cedar trees; and a number of gardens designed in the 1930s by landscape architect and Katonah resident Robert Ludlow Fowler, Jr. The Caramoor estate provides an incomparable setting for our cultural programs by serving as a stage for music performances and contextualizing the concerts that occur here; providing a learning laboratory for arts-in-education and emerging artist programs; and providing an idyllic haven for approximately 30,000 visitors annually.Description

DescriptionEducation - See Schedule OEducation is central to Caramoor's mission and woven into our overall programming. Through our four mentoring programs, we identify, nurture, and promote the next generation of vocal and instrumental artists. Through our arts-in-education programs, we provide enrichment opportunities to schoolchildren from Westchester County and New York City.Evnin Rising StarsFor nearly two decades there has been an institutional focus on training instrumental artists. Pianist, conductor, and composer Andre Previn established the mentoring program now known as the Evnin Rising Stars at Caramoor in 1992; as his tenure at Caramoor concluded, conductor Peter Oundjian took on artistic leadership of the program. Since 2008 violinist Pamela Frank has acted as Artistic Director for the Evnin Rising Stars. Each fall, eight to ten instrumentalists come together with three distinguished artists - mentors have included Atar Arad, Kim Kashkashian, Ani Kavafian, Marcy Rosen, Ronald Thomas, and Donald Weilerstein, among others - for a week of intensive chamber music rehearsals, coaching, and performances of works from the heart of the chamber music repertoire. At the end of the residency the musicians perform for audiences in the intimate Music Room of the historic Rosen House, giving them valuable exposure and performance experience. The Evnin Rising Stars program has identified and brought over a hundred promising musicians to Caramoor. As the years have passed, alumni of the program have established themselves as important artists in the world of classical music performance. In 2011 eight young Rising Stars partnered with three established musician mentors in a week-long residency program of coaching and rehearsals. The program was scheduled to culminate with two performances which were cancelled due to an untimely October blizzard.Bel Canto Young ArtistsIn 1998 Will Crutchfield established the Bel Canto Young Artists program. Each year approximately 30 young opera singers are chosen to receive rigorous training in bel canto singing and to perform small roles during the operas presented by the International Music Festival. Six weeks in length, the program includes daily group classes by Caramoor staff and guests. Members of the program also understudy the principal roles of each summer's operas, participating in full-scale rehearsals that provide them with the invaluable opportunity to test their skills in a complete part. They also gain performance experience and exposure with audiences in pre-opera recital concerts. As the years have passed, alumni of the program have established themselves as important artists in the world of opera. In 2011 36 young opera singers took part in this program. They reached 3,508 audience members through their performances. Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-ResidenceIn 1999, with generous underwriting support from The Ernst C. Stiefel Foundation, Caramoor established a residency program for young chamber ensembles. In performing at Caramoor throughout the year, the quartet gains recognition and performance experience. In turn, the quartet hones their mentoring skills with didactic performances and workshops for area schoolchildren who attend as part of the Student Strings arts-in-education program. The quartet also partners with a young composer on a new commission which is premiered during Caramoor's International Music Festival. In 2011 the Jasper String Quartet completed its Stiefel residency with performances in the spring and summer, reaching 173 audience members. The Linden String Quartet, the 2011-2012 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, began its residency in the fall with a concert reaching 108 audience members. In addition, approximately 1,000 local schoolchildren participated in Student Strings, the arts-in-education program which is led by the quartet.Schwab Vocal Rising StarsThe Schwab Vocal Rising Stars, established in 2009 and under the artistic leadership of Caramoor's Executive Director, Michael Barrett, and the New York Festival of Song's Artistic Director, Steven Blier, is a program for young vocal artists. The initiative focuses on singing outside the realm of opera, including the song recital and vocal chamber music. The week-long residency offers intensive daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops with mentors and leaders in the field and concludes with performances at Caramoor and at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.In 2011 four young singers participated in the week-long Vocal Rising Stars program under the guidance of Michael Barrett and Steven Blier. The program culminated in two performances; the first at Caramoor before an audience of 53 and the second at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, which has an audience capacity of 450.Through its arts-in-education programs, Caramoor also served 6,197 schoolchildren in 2011, with an emphasis on reaching out to schools from underserved communities in the region, such as the Scholastic Academy in Yonkers and PS 134 in the Bronx. In 2011 approximately 40% of participants received funding support from Caramoor through fee waivers and transportation underwriting. Programs include:* A Day in the Renaissance: a day of learning period songs and dances; attending a performance by a commedia dell'arte group; exploring Caramoor's collection of Renaissance art; and observing the art of falconry.* What's in a House?: a two-day exploration of architecture, art, music, and horticulture. Students build their own architectural structures; compose their own music with professional musicians; explore the historic Rosen House; and engage in a workshop examining the historical use of herbs.* Chinese Arts and Culture: an in-depth introduction to Chinese culture explores Caramoor's collection of Asian art including silk wallpapers and jade sculpture; an east/west music workshop; hands-on art of brush painting; and a Chinese tea ceremony.* Student Strings: an in-school "Concert and Conversation" with our annual string quartet-in-residence; a clinic run by the quartet; and an invitation for the students to attend a performance by the quartet at Caramoor.* Design A Day: specifically tailored programs with grade-appropriate subject matter and curriculum requirements.Description

Management has determined that Caramoor had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition or disclosure. Caramoor is no longer subject to examinations by the applicable taxing jurisdictions for periods prior to December 31, 2008.

Schedule D, Part III, Line 4: While public tours and the annual special exhibition were temporarily suspended, the Rosen House collection remained available to the public through Caramoor's music presentations, young artist mentoring programs, and arts-in-education programs. In addition, the archival materials are a great source of humanities research in a number of fields. One example is the documentation relating to the Rosens' patronage of Leon Theremin and championing of his early electronic music instrument. This material has been a source of study for theremin researchers, including Robert Moog, who began building theremins in the 1950s as a high school student and later went on to design the Moog synthesizer and Albert Glinsky, Theremin's biographer and the author of Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage. In 2011, staff and volunteers continued to research a wealth of archival material in the Rosen House in order to develop new public programs and better understand the Rosens, their contributions to the arts, and the history of Caramoor as a performing arts center. The Rosen House collection demonstrates a tremendous breadth of art objects, furniture, and archival material. The art and furniture encompass over 1,000 cataloged objects, including European furniture from the 16th-19th centuries; European medieval and Renaissance paintings, sculpture, textiles, and decorative objects; and Asian statuary. There are also approximately 100 light fixtures and decorative elements by Edward F. Caldwell and Company dating from the 1930s. Other categories include photographs, textiles, early 20th-century costumes, and musical instruments. In addition, there is a wealth of material relating to the Rosens, the development of the Caramoor campus, and the establishment of the International Music Festival. Objects from the collection displayed in the Music Room of the Rosen House - including a wooden 16th-century Italian ceiling, French and Swiss 16th-century stained glass, Renaissance tapestries, and 17th-century furniture helps create an inspiring setting for music performances. The collection also provides primary material for Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. In programs such as A Day in the Renaissance, Chinese Arts & Culture, and What's in a House? students participate in guided tours and are encouraged to use the collection as inspiration for their own writing, drawing, and music-making.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 2Susan Freund and Anthony Freund (term ended in October 2011) are trustees of Caramoor and have a family relationship.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The prepared Form 990 is reviewed by senior management and the members of the Audit Committee and then provided to the Board of Trustees prior to filing. Management, the Audit Committee members, and the independent auditors meet to review and discuss the return. If necessary, the independent auditors submit an updated Form 990 to the CFO. The CFO confirms that the updates are accurate and posts the final draft to an FTP site. The URL address for the FTP site is circulated to the Board. The Chair of the Audit Committee delivers the Committee report on the preparation and review of the 990 to the Board and recommends the Form 990 be filed. If no changes are noted, the Form 990 is filed.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cCaramoor followed its conflict of interest policy. A conflict of interest disclosure statement shall be furnished annually by each trustee and each covered employee disclosing any anticipated or possible conflict situations. Covered employees shall be senior employees and other employees who have a decision making role in hiring or contracting. Each new trustee and covered employee shall be advised of the policy and furnished a disclosure statement upon undertaking the duties of such office. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a transaction requiring action by the Board of Trustees or committee of the Board, the interested person shall call it to the attention of the Board of Trustees or such committee and the trustee concerned shall not vote on the matter. Moreover, the person having a conflict shall retire from the room in which the Board or committee is meeting and may not participate in the final deliberation or decisions regarding the matter under consideration. However, that person may provide the Board or committee with any and all relevant information before retiring. The minutes of the meeting of the Board or committee shall reflect that the conflict of interest was disclosed and that the interested person was not present during the final discussion or vote and did not vote. When there is a doubt as to whether a conflict of interest exists, the matter shall be resolved by the Board of Trustees excluding the person whose situation will be discussed. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a matter involving an employee, such employee shall notify the Board of Trustees and the Chief Executive Officer of Caramoor. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Board of Trustees may waive any disclosed conflict if it determines such waiver to be in the best interests of Caramoor.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15Caramoor has a formal Compensation Committee which reviews annually salaries, bonuses, and benefits for all Caramoor employees. The Committee pays special attention to the positions of CEO, Managing Director, CDO, and CFO. Annual reviews include self-assessment by the employee, the employee's supervisor, and recommendations from the CEO. The CEO also receives a review from the Compensation Committee. Trustees that sit on the Compensation Committee have all signed "conflict of interest" declarations, and do so annually. The Committee reviews salaries and compensation for similar sized arts organizations in the New York area, and nationally, and uses this information in their decision making. Minutes of the Committee's deliberations and decisions are forwarded to the CFO to be carried out and filed. The last meeting of the Compensation Committee took place on January 6, 2012.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 18The Organization makes its form 990 available for public inspection as required under section 6104 of the Internal Revenue Code by posting it on guidestar.org and other similar types of websites.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19Caramoor's governing documents are made available to the public upon request and are available for inspection at the finance office. Caramoor's conflict of interest policy is made available to the public upon request and is available for inspection at the finance office. Form 990, Part XI, Line 2C:The Organization has a committe that assumes responsibility for the oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. This process did not change from the prior year.Committee oversight of the audit of the financial statements:
Form 990, Part I, Line 6:Through their generous commitment of time, enthusiasm, and expertise, Caramoor benefits from the contributions of volunteers throughout the year. In 2011 over 200 people volunteered part-time at Caramoor in a variety of capacities. This number was determined by the scope of Caramoor's presenting activities and educational programs, in addition to the availability of the volunteers themselves. The majority of volunteers act as ushers at Caramoor's year-round music presentations. They are often the public face of Caramoor, acting as greeters, helping audience members to their seats, and ensuring the visiting public's safety and comfort. * 25-40 ushers work at each concert in the Venetian Theater * 16-20 ushers work at each concert in the Spanish Courtyard * 10 ushers work at each concert in the Music Room * 10 ushers work at each Dancing at Dusk concert on Friends' Field * 10 ushers work at each concert in the Sunken Garden Volunteers also play a major role in Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. They give tours of the collection, lead various elements of each program, and help children and teachers through the campus. In 2011, with docent-led tours of the Rosen House for the public on hold, volunteers instead dedicated their time to cataloging archival material in the Rosen House collection. They also performed clerical duties for the administrative staff throughout the year.Use of Volunteer service to achieve exempt activities:
