Our APA memberships are voluntary and open to any individual interested in improving communities. Our monthly flagship magazine focuses on information that provides trends, current planning practices, new approaches, reviews of books, reports, and news of what is happening in both private and public sectors. The Journal of the American Planning Association is published quarterly to report on research, new thoughts, and current literature; it is edited independently through a university- based editorial team, with a worldwide subscription list. The Planning & Environmental Law periodical is published monthly and distills the latest court decisions and legislation regarding planning and environmental law. Every issue contains detailed abstracts of the most important new state and federal court decisions. The Zoning Practice periodical is published monthly and helps guide those who write and administer development codes; monitors all the latest trends in local land-use controls, and brings the reader current news and ordinance excerpts.Each quarter APA's Planning Advisory Service (PAS) publishes a new PAS report providing authoritative guidance on current issues and innovative practices. The Commissioner provides planning commissioners, planning and zoning board members, and other appointed and elected officials with practical features and tips. This quarterly publication is an invaluable training resource to assist those making critical decisions in the best interest of communities.APA's celebrates excellence in planning through our Great Places in America Program. Annually, APA recognizes 10 great neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces of exceptional character, quality, and planning. The neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces are suggested by residents or visitors. The National Planning Conference brings planners, planning commissioners, elected officials, educators, allied professionals, students and engaged citizens together in an assembly of sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities to gain knowledge of current community challenges and initiatives in the field of planning. The American Institute of Certified Planners' (AICP) Certification Maintenance program helps certified planners gain the knowledge and skills they need to remain current in the practice of planning. Community Planning Assistance Teams (CPAT's) are a key AICP initiative.. | Description of Uncertain Tax Positions Under FIN 48: | Part X: | The Association is exempt from income taxes under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and applicable state law. The accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under this guidance, the Association may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more than likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the Association and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income (UBIT). The tax benefits recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50 percent likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. There were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities for the reporting periods presented in the financial statements. The Association files Form 990 in the U.S. federal jurisdiction and the State of Illinois. The Association is generally no longer subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service for tax years before 2008. |
