Activity Or Mission DescriptionAt Robert Treat Academy Charter School, we believe that schools exist for children-to give them very best education possible so that one day they will be successful adults and citizens. Every student, rich or poor, regardless of color, language, or origin deserves our all-out efforts to deliver an excellent education. This is an American dream we must achieve if our country is to remain strong. Today's students have to be better prepared to adapt and learn for the rest of their lives. This is the demand of a global society. Our students' education must be guided by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in the areas of reading and language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, world language, the arts and physical education/health. Our students must also master other 21st century skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork. Robert Treat Academy has another critical role to play in preparing our students to succeed.ActivityOrMissionDescription

DescriptionRobert Treat Academy Charter School completed its fourteenth year of operation in 2010-11. The major initiative that concerned both the Board of Trustees and the administrators during the 2010-11 school year was the expansion of Robert Treat Academy Charter School's Central Campus to include third grade. Robert Treat Academy CENTRAL is located at 180 William Street in Newark's Central Ward. Both campuses are officially part of "one" Robert Treat Academy with a total combined enrollment of up to 525 students in 2010-11. Long-term plans call for the addition of the successive grade each year thereafter until eighth grade is added in 2017. Both RTA CENTRAL and Robert Treat Academy's North Campus at 443 Clifton Avenue offer an eleven-month school year with a seven-hour instructional day and eight hour professional day. Early care beginning at 7:30 a.m. and an extended school day (until 5:30 p.m.) accommodate working parents and provide time for extracurricular activities. Our remedial services (Reading Recovery and Guided Reading, tutoring and speech) also take place during the extended day, insuring that students do not miss classroom instructional time because they are receiving remedial instruction. The extended day program also offers extracurricular activities including boys' and girls' basketball, instrumental music instruction, chorus, recreation, arts and crafts, dance and character education. Program evaluation has again indicated significant academic progress. Third through eighth graders took the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK). These statewide exams, part of the testing required by the federal No Child Left Behind legislation, form the basis of the NJ School Report Card which publishes the names of the top elementary and secondary schools each year. Robert Treat Academy continues to rate as one of the top elementary schools in the state. Parent participation continues to be a key element of our focus. Attendance at monthly parent meetings continues to average more than 75%. Parents serving on the Board of Trustees, are elected to the Parent Council Executive Committee and sit on the School Improvement Team, a cooperative partnership of administrators, teachers and parents who work as a core planning team. Parent representatives also serve on the Student Support Team and volunteer in other areas (coaching recreational activities, chaperoning students on trips, serving as classroom "mothers and fathers", attending and assisting at school-wide events, plays and performances). Our curriculum is aligned to the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards and emphasizes thematic programming in reading/early literacy, mathematics, technology, Spanish as a second language, science, social studies, art, music and physical education/health. In September 2011 we began the process of incorporating the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics which will be phased into all grades over the next several years. The CCSS will also begin being implemented in English Language Arts and Literacy during the next several years. Our focus on improving our advanced proficient language arts percentages was continued in 2010-11 with the continuation of an intensive staff development program begun last year. Professional development efforts centered around continued training for our teachers on utilizing data to drive instruction through the use of interim assessments. In all subject areas, staff development remains crucial to meeting the School's overall mission. Our training schedule again included workshops in math, language arts/reading, science, and behavior management. In the area of technology, staff development took place throughout the year to make teachers more effective in the use of the Promethean Interactive Whiteboards installed in every classroom. Efforts to prepare our students for New Jersey's state test in grades 3 through 8 and for the TerraNova 3 in grades K to 2 also continue to be a focus of staff development activities and Saturday Academy. We graduated our seventh eighth grade class in June 2011. Those students were prepared for admission to secondary school by our High School Placement Program. The program is responsible for working with our students and their families to place students in the most appropriate setting for their secondary school education. Our graduates continued to earn scholarships to attend some of the most prestigious private, independent schools in the nation. The Alumni Coordinator is responsible for working with graduates and their families, visiting with students and their advisors at the boarding and day schools to track student success and provide support for students who are having difficulty adjusting to high school. The School also continued its relationships with community-based organizations. These groups included the School's founding organization, the North Ward Center and Just One Soccer which made sports activities available, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth which provided summer enrichment programs for students. The School also maintained its membership in the New Jersey Charter Public Schools Association and the New Jersey School Boards Association.Description
