ORGANIZATION'S MISSIONFORM 990, PART III, LINE 1The Foundation Center's mission is to strengthen the social sector by advancing knowledge about philanthropy in the U.S. and around the world. The Center accomplishes its mission by: - Operating library/learning centers in five locations-New York City; Washington, DC; Atlanta; Cleveland; and San Francisco that offer free access to information resources and educational programs. - Maintaining unique databases of information on more than 105,000 foundations, corporate donors, and grantmaking public charities worldwide and over 5 million of their recent grants. Its Foundation Directory Online subscription service is the most popular means for searching these databases. - Providing a content-rich web site with a variety of free search tools, tutorials, downloadable reports, and other information updated daily, including Philanthropy News Digest, its daily news service, and PubHub, its searchable online collection of thousands of reports published by foundations and nonprofit organizations. - Conducting research and publishing reports on the growth of the foundation field and on trends in foundation support of the nonprofit sector. - Publishing books ranging from basic primers on fundraising and nonprofit management to comprehensive reference works. - Coordinating a network of funding information centers nationwide and around the world - more than 475 Cooperating Collections that offer free local access to core Center resources and training. Established in 1956, the Foundation Center is the leading source of information about philanthropy worldwide. Through data, analysis, and training, it connects people who want to change the world to the resources they need to succeed. The Center maintains the most comprehensive database on U.S. and, increasingly, global grantmakers and their grants - a robust, accessible knowledge bank for the sector. It also operates research, education, and training programs designed to advance knowledge of philanthropy at every level. Thousands of people visit the Center's web site each day and are served in its five regional library/learning centers and its network of more than 475 funding information centers located in public libraries, community foundations, and educational institutions nationwide and around the world.
PROGRAM SERVICES - DATA COLLECTION AND PUBLICATIONSFORM 990, PART III, LINE 4AEXPENSES $8,932,555 AND REVENUE $11,431,727 The Center maintains unique databases of information on more than 105,000 foundations, corporate donors, and grantmaking public charities worldwide and over 5 million of their recent grants. Its Foundation Directory Online subscription service is the most popular means for searching these databases. This subscription service is made available for free use in over 475 locations nationwide and around the world. The Center also publishes books ranging from basic primers on fundraising and nonprofit management to comprehensive reference works. Other major data collection and publications program accomplishments in 2012 include the following: Partnerships to Improve Data Collection, Management, and Sharing: In 2012, the Foundation Center focused on systematic approaches to data collection through improved partnerships and upgraded technology. As philanthropic efforts become more global, there is an undeniable need to work and share information across more diverse landscapes by clearly defining data standards for philanthropy. The Center engaged with Worldwide Initiative for Grantmaker Support (WINGS) and its member associations, the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI)-international coalition of governments and NGOs-to streamline data collection and management of aid activity. The Center participated in presentations with WINGS at two global conferences and at IATI events in the United Kingdom, France, and Sweden around creating common data standards. The Center also engaged our existing partners as well as new partners including Red Argentina para la Cooperacin Internacional, Centre for Social Impact (Australia), Directory of Social Change (United Kingdom), National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (Singapore), Ford Foundation West Africa (Nigeria), and Inyathelo (South Africa), working collaboratively to streamline philanthropic data platforms. The Center partnered with the International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG), to launch Advancing Human Rights, a first-ever initiative to track, report on, and make accessible information on foundation support for human rights worldwide via an interactive tool. The Center mapped a definition of human rights grantmaking that was also adopted by an international team of advisors to actual grants. The initiative significantly improved data that the Center makes available related to this subject and expanded Grants Classification to better capture human rights-related grantmaking. New Data Collection: Throughout 2012, the Center expanded the breadth and quality of domestic and international data. In order to serve the sector's growing range of philanthropic contributions, the Center recognized the need to update taxonomy so that users could compare their activities or conduct global scale qualitative research. The Center worked with a consultant and Smartlogic, to inform this taxonomic reorganization, including making taxonomy more accurate and implementing improved coding strategies. The Center also focused on tracking philanthropic data relating to current affairs and emerging interests, such as disaster responses for Hurricane Sandy relief. In total, 23,000 grants were added from non-U.S. funders to the Center's grants database. This work included adding information on over 10,000 Canadian charities; facilitating data conversation and management for three Australian foundations and 150 grants to create a pilot Philanthropy In/Sight: Australia; and adding information on 800 Chinese charities in partnership with the China Foundation Center. The Center now collects information on over 2,500 Chinese charities and compiled data on 740 new community-based foundations. Electronic Grant Reporting: The Center continues to make significant strides building on its ongoing efforts for over a decade to improve data about foundation giving. The Center's ongoing eGrant reporting standard work is designed to continually improve reporting that allows foundations to transmit their grant data electronically via export modules. This feature is available by using nine of the grants management software providers, including MicroEdge, GIFTS, Foundant, nPower, and SmartSimple. Similarly, the Foundation Center's existing hGrant reporting system, an html-based version of the eGrant standard, allows foundations to automatically, accurately, and consistently capture and transmit information from the foundation's own Web site or RSS feed. The Center made the hGrant reporting data received available free of charge to the general public in the "Looking Inside Foundations" area of Glasspockets [http://www.glasspockets.org/inside/whgp/index.html]. Foundation Directory Online (FDO) Enhancement: The Center improved Foundation Center Updater [http://updater.foundationcenter.org/], with a feature that allows grantmakers to make direct updates to their FDO profile, making it easier to provide the Center with current information. With this improvement, grantmakers are helping to keep their public facing information timely and accurate. In addition, the Center merged IssueLab reports to FDO Professional's Power Search, replacing PubHub, so that search results now reference this larger, more comprehensive dataset. Also, new in 2012, FDO Professional subscribers and visitors to certain libraries and Philanthropy Information Centers can access FDO by using Android devices. Last year, the Center provided 154,019 users free FDO accounts. Fondos a la Vista: Developed in partnership with the Philanthropy and Civil Society Project at Instituto Tecnolgico Autnomo de Mxico (ITAM) and Alternatives y Capacidades in Mexico, the Center developed an online Spanish-language directory including data on over 22,000 nonprofit organizations in Mexico. The directory offers users with reliable and publically accessible information about Mexican donors, their respective philanthropic activity, including the organizations they fund. Foundation Grants to Individual Online Redesign: Individual grantseekers such as artists and students have very specific fundraising needs and benefit greatly from a product uniquely tailored to those needs. Foundation Grants to Individuals Online is a valuable resource for this audience, allowing them to find prospective funders based on fields of interest and types of support specific to the individual grantseeker. In 2012, the Center released the redesigned, user-friendly version by adding new tools, search fields, and foundation social media links. Creating Knowledge Resources: In partnership with the International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG), the Center launched Advancing Human Rights, a first-ever initiative to track, report on, and open public access to foundation support for human rights worldwide. The initiative has included: creating a human rights custom version of the Philanthropy In/Sight data visualization platform, which provides access to grants awarded by over 150 IHRFG, Ariadne, and International Network of Women's Funds members, as well as over 12,000 funders; collecting, processing, indexing, and researching all human rights grants data received from foundations in 29 countries; matching the definition of 'human rights grantmaking' to internal grants taxonomy with approval and adoption by an international team of advisors; expanding Grants Classification System to better capture human rights-related grantmaking; conducting interviews with 25 leading human rights funders on current challenges and opportunities; and preparing a first-ever benchmark study of foundation funding for human rights; scheduled for release in 2013. Philanthropy In/Sight: With the creation of our Google Maps-based, interactive GIS tool, Philanthropy In/Sight [http://philanthropyinsight.org/] in 2009, the Center took a giant step forward in building a platform for visualizing the work of global philanthropy. Philanthropy In/Sight helps grantmakers and grantseekers to better understand funding patterns worldwide, bolstering their strategic decision making and ability to identify opportunities for funding and/or collaboration. Each year, the Center continues to add data to increase Philanthropy In/Sight's utility. At the end of 2012, In/Sight includes information on more than 124,000 grantmakers, including nearly 15,000 foundations and 39,000 grants in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe, and China. In 2012, The Center developed three customized PINS editions, including Philanthropy In/Sight: Human Rights, Philanthropy In/Sight: LGBTQ, and Philanthropy In/Sight: Boys and Men of Color in California.
PROGRAM SERVICES - LIBRARY/LEARNING CENTERS AND OTHER PUBLIC SERVICESFORM 990, PART III, LINE 4BEXPENSES $4,905,663 AND REVENUE $1,389,298 The Center operates professionally staffed library/learning centers in five locations-New York City; Washington, DC; Atlanta; Cleveland; and San Francisco-that offer free access to the Center's online subscription databases and books, other resources on funders and all aspects of philanthropy and nonprofit management and free educational programs. In 2012, the Center's libraries were utilized by over 45,000 visitors. The Center has an Online Librarian who responds to reference questions from people who prefer use its resources online. The Center's rotation of 22 free, in-person classes gives participants a comprehensive understanding of the grantseeking process. On its Website 16 webinars of its free classes, as well as free tutorials and interactive courses and audio/video recordings of its special events, extend training opportunities to those who are unable to attend classroom presentations or who prefer to learn at their own pace in their home or office to about 9,000 online participants. These online courses save travel time and costs, and broaden the Center's reach into underserved and rural communities. In 2012, approximately 26,000 people participated in the Center's free training, both in-person and online. The Center also coordinates a network of funding information centers nationwide and around the world - more than 475 Cooperating Collections that offer free local access to core Center resources, including the Foundation Directory Online Professional and training. Other major library/learning center accomplishments in 2012 include the following: Enhancing GrantSpace: GrantSpace [http://www.grantspace.org] is a dynamic, interactive online tool specifically designed for nonprofits worldwide in need of know-how for securing funding and operating effective organizations. This past year, GrantSpace provided approximately 989,890 unique visitors with free access to Foundation Center resources, reducing both training and travel costs and providing convenient 24-hour access to anyone, anywhere. Creating original multimedia content is critical to the ongoing relevance and success of GrantSpace as a thriving learning community. In 2012, the Center added over 100 original pieces of multimedia content, including 11 webinar recordings, 66 video recordings, and 32 podcasts. The Center's multimedia archives were viewed more than 66,000 times during the year. Additionally, GrantSpace's resources were significantly bolstered through the development of a widget that dynamically integrated the Foundation Center IssueLab's extensive knowledge repository of over 12,000 case studies, evaluations, white papers, and issue briefs--which address some of the world's most pressing social challenges, that were published by over 2,000 social sector organizations. The Center also added interactive elements such as Course Advisor, a diagnostic tool that recommends free and fee-based training courses by assessing a user's skill level and experience. Finally, the Center further opened access to it's resources by launching a mobile version that features the Center's fundraising tools. New Training Courses: To keep content relevant to the challenges that nonprofits face today, the Center added new programs that address critical sector issues, including evaluation, collaboration, and revenue planning. Also, the Center expanded their leadership group initiative, bringing a community of nonprofit leaders together to share challenges and strategies for organizational effectiveness; these programs specifically served executive directors and development directors. Providing Access to Under-Resourced Audiences: Building upon it's local and national scholarship program that targets nonprofit representatives who are unable to participate in our fee-based training because of financial barriers, the Center offered 95 New York-based and 120 national-based scholarships in 2012. The Center also continued to offer Spanish-language classes in our library/learning centers, while audio editions of Guide to Proposal Writing and training videos of Grantseeking Basics are available for free download in both English and Spanish. These multimedia resources are also serving people with visual impairments. GrantSpace now includes 76 Spanish language knowledge-based articles, which were viewed in 2012 more than 44,000 times. The Center continued to offer convenient, local access to the Center's resources, online and on the ground, through the five regional library/learning centers, and over 475 Philanthropy Information Centers (formerly "Cooperating Collections"). These sites provided walk-in visitors with free access to the Center's print and online tools and resources geared toward building the capacity and improving nonprofit management.
PROGRAM SERVICES - RESEARCH AND OTHER PROGRAMSFORM 990, PART III, LINE 4CEXPENSES $3,887,631 AND REVENUE $882,172 The Center conducts research and publishes reports on the growth of the foundation field and on trends in foundation support of the nonprofit sector. To maximize the impact of its research, it hosts briefings and panels to discuss key findings, and "spreads the word" through social media. To make knowledge accessible to all, it makes its full reports or highlights from them available for free download at its web site. Special efforts in Research and other programs in 2012 include the following: GrantCraft: GrantCraft [www.grantcraft.org] is a joint project of the Foundation Center and the Brussels-based European Foundation Centre. By publishing resources and facilitating the exchange of information among funders around the world, GrantCraft increases the collective knowledge of the field and improves the practice of philanthropy. In 2012, the Center refreshed the GrantCraft Website to provide more intuitive navigation and published four new guides. The latest guide, Scanning the Landscape 2.0, includes 15 interviews from U.S. and European foundations and examples of how technology is making scanning faster and easier than ever before. Three European Foundation Centre-produced guides, Funding for Inclusion, Foundations in Europe Working Together, and Speaking Up! offering innovative knowledge about how European foundations do their work. Over 150 funders across the European Union were engaged in developing this content; these guides present insight on strategies for funding issues related to women and girls, collaboration, and advocacy. The Foundation Registry i3: The Foundation Registry i3 [www.foundationregistryi3.org] was created by education funders to support Investing in Innovation (i3) program of the U.S. Department of Education (ED). ED provides competitive grants to i3 applicants to expand groundbreaking practices that improve student achievement, close achievement gaps, decrease drop-out rates, increase high school graduation rates, or increase college enrollment or completion rates. The Foundation Center administered Foundation Registry i3 in 2012, providing outreach and support to applicants and funders. As a result, 100% of the 2012 i3 highest-rated applicants (HRAs) met ED's requirements for a private sector match. The Center also added sixteen new foundations to the Registry, including six that pledged grants to this year's HRAs. Initiative for Sustainable Arts in America: In partnership with the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations, the Foundation Center initiated SustainArts.org, a community based effort to strengthen the nation's cultural infrastructure. Working with a diverse range of community partners across the country the Center worked to analyze the linkages between capitalization, demography, and participation, core to develop bold new policies to support the arts at the local and national level. Reports to Address the Sector's Most Pressing Issues: The Foundation Center continues to provide custom research reports utilizing data from our comprehensive grants database to address critical and timely issues. Where Do We Go From Here? Philanthropic Support for Black Men and Boys (http://foundationcenter.org/gainknowledge/reseach/pdf /osf_bmb.pdf), for example, was released in May 2012 by the Foundation Center and the Open Society Foundations (OSF). This report is the first of its kind to document the wide variety of philanthropic activity in support of black men and boys, raising the visibility of critical issues facing communities across the nation. It found that nearly every major indicator of economic, social, and physical well-being shows that black men and boys in the U.S. do not have access to the structural supports and opportunities needed to thrive. The research also reveals that annual funding designated for black men and boys has been rising steadily, from $10 million in 2003 to $29 million in 2010; between 2008 and 2010, education garnered 40% of these grant dollars. Benchmarking Payout Reports: The Center released two new reports that examine the payout practices and spending patterns of more than 1,000 larger U.S. independent foundations. These reports provide an authoritative, unbiased source of knowledge to help the public and policymakers better understand foundation practice and to help foundations benchmark their own activities. Understanding and Benchmarking Foundation Payout explains the concept of "payout," which refers to the total amount that a foundation reports as its charitable distribution. The report is the first of its kind to track payout practices of the largest U.S. foundations. Benchmarking Foundation Administrative Expenses: Update on How Operating Characteristics Affect Spending considers how differences in foundations' infrastructure, operations, and programmatic activities influence spending patterns. Hurricane Sandy Response: While the Foundation Center's main office in New York was closed due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, staff worked from home to collect information about relief grants. The Center informed the public daily with information regarding the philanthropic sector's response to this disaster through outlets such as the Chronicle on Philanthropy and our own Philanthropy News Digest. In total, the Center collected information on 611 grants from 427 grantmakers adding up to $217,828,683. The work led to strategic partnerships aimed to gather more comprehensive data on disasters, reducing redundancy and improving collaboration. IssueLab: IssueLab is an initiative of the Foundation Center. It is an online knowledge sharing platform that provides free and open access to resources that analyze the world's most pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges and their potential solutions. Today, IssueLab represents one of the largest collections of social sector knowledge, spanning 40 issues areas and containing over 12,000 resources produced by more than 2,000 organizations. In 2012, IssueLab took on the stewardship of two organizational archives, one for Public/Private Ventures and one for Public Education Network, both of which ceased operations in 2012 after decades of producing high quality research. Their findings and analysis will continue to inform social sector practitioners, researchers, and advocates through the IssueLab collection. IssueLab also worked with Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support (WINGS) to overhaul the organization's static eLibrary and create the WINGS Knowledge Center. This "knowledge center" service is an extension of the IssueLab platform that enables organizations, coalitions, and networks to quickly and easily create and maintain their own online libraries. The WINGS Knowledge Center provides a clearinghouse for publications produced by WINGS, its global network of 145 associations, and support organizations located in 54 countries. IssueLab enables social sector organizations to broadly share their resources, using e-newsletters alerts, Web site, and RSS feeds. Access is also available through other online services that harvest and share IssueLab's metadata. In addition to mainstreaming the social sector's knowledge, IssueLab provides greater exposure for the people who generate these resources by featuring the authors and researchers, the issue experts who create them. IssueLab's aim is to highlight the relevance of the knowledge, organizations, and people of the social sector by curating special collections on current events as they occur, special collection on gun violence in the US released days after the Newtown, CT mass shooting.
PROGRAM SERVICES - RESEARCH AND OTHER PROGRAMS (CONTINUED)FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4CGlasspockets Expansion: Glasspockets [http://www.glasspockets.org] remains the Foundation Center's main tool for encouraging greater transparency in the world of philanthropy. It provides critical information about the entire field, gives clear examples of the relevancy of foundations' work to the challenges of our time, and includes a range of tools that identify best practices among foundations in promoting transparency in the digital age. Since its launch, a growing number of foundations are using it as a means to benchmark their own Web design and social media practices. The site now includes 50 foundation profiles (22 added in 2012), averaging 4,000 visits per month. Eye on the Giving Pledge: Eye on the Giving Pledge combines the Foundation Center's authoritative data on philanthropy with public information to offer an in-depth picture of the Giving Pledge, an effort spearheaded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates that encourages the wealthiest Americans to commit the majority of their assets to philanthropic causes. In 2012, the Foundation Center created a page on their Glasspockets Web site to include information on its participants, their charitable activities, and the potential impact of this collective effort. It contains profiles of the 81 individuals and families that have signed the Pledge. Each profile details the participant's net worth, primary industry affiliation, giving interests, related foundations, charitable board service, and philanthropic press coverage. Charts reveal demographic trends in participation, including geographic distribution, industry affiliation, net worth, and age of the pledgers. Additionally, curated reading lists provide insights and opinion about the Giving Pledge more broadly. Reporting Commitment: The 15 largest U.S. foundations are working with the Foundation Center to assist in the Reporting Commitment initiative aimed to advance transparency. The participating foundations made this commitment to each other and the field based on the belief that accurate and accessible information is critical to effective collaboration, strategic decision making, and a more engaged philanthropy sector. The Foundation Center was selected to provide technical implementation of this initiative due to its strategic position in the sector in the area of standards and taxonomy. Grant information, which will be reported at least quarterly by each foundation, is available on Glasspockets, which includes an interactive map of the data (http://glasspockets.org/work/reportingcommitment/map. .html) that allows people to see the national and global reach of America's largest foundations. foundations.
