| Description | The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) promotes press freedom worldwide and defends the right of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal. CPJ takes action wherever journalists are censored, attacked, imprisoned, or killed for their work. Its advocacy helps to ensure the free flow of news and commentary. Since its establishment in 1981, CPJ has grown to be a leader in the global press freedom movement. The organization is distinguished by the high quality of its reporting, a reputation for political independence, decades of experience, and an influential board of directors. Its professional staff of journalists and regional experts report on press freedom violations, advocate for reforms, and provide emergency aid to journalists at risk. CPJ pursues direct engagement with government officialsincluding meetings with heads of stateto secure results. The organizations reporting is routinely used as the basis for protests and appeals by a range of influential actors, such as other international human rights and free expression groups, political leaders, and diplomats. CPJs reporting is amplified by major international media coverage. All of its published work is available online at cpj.org.CPJ is responding to record numbers of attacks against the press, partly as a consequence of political turmoil but also due to the changing nature of international reporting. The number of journalists killed in the line of duty spiked in 2012, as the war in Syria, a record number of shootings in Somalia, and continued violence in Pakistan contributed to a 42 percent increase in deaths from the previous year. CPJ documented the cases of 70 journalists killed for their work. Imprisonment of journalists worldwide reached a record high in 2012, driven largely by the widespread use of charges of terrorism and other anti-state offenses against critical reporters and editors. There were 232 journalists behind bars worldwide on December 1, at the time of CPJs annual census of imprisoned journalists. Turkey was the worlds leading jailer of journalistssurpassing the records of notoriously repressive states including Iran and China. There is a positive side to these grim statistics: more journalists are imprisoned worldwide because there are more journalists pushing the boundaries in repressive societies. Meanwhile, CPJ advocacy and direct aid help to turn the tide. In 2012, the organizations campaign to Free the Press contributed to the early release of 63 imprisoned journalists worldwide. CPJ provided emergency aid to 195 journalists, many of whom were forced into exile under threat of imprisonment or murder.CPJs work has been profoundly affected by the technological innovations that are reshaping the environment for international newsgathering. The organization serves a broader constituency of journalists, including more online journalists, freelancers, and stringers who work with little to no institutional support. CPJ responds to a greater range of threats to free expression, from physical assault and imprisonment to cyber-attacks and electronic surveillance. CPJ has established three programmatic priorities Internet Advocacy, Journalist Security, and Journalist Assistance. The organization is doing more to internationalize operations and strengthen campaigning capacity. The Internet Advocacy program, created in 2010, has demonstrated considerable impact so far. CPJ has established working relationships with leading companies, including Google and Facebook, to resolve emergency cases involving online journalists and bloggers. The program provides crucial advice to journalists about threats to data security. The organization also hosts a blog devoted to issues related to freedom of expression online, the CPJ Internet Channel.CPJ is strengthening its Journalist Security program in response to the greater demand for expert analysis and advice. In 2012, CPJ launched a fully updated version of its Journalist Security Guide to help a new generation of journalists navigate the dangers of reporting. The guide includes chapters on covering conflict, crime, civil disturbances, and natural disasters, and provides expert advice on data security. The section on risk assessment features CPJs pioneering research on sexual violence against journalists. The organization runs a Journalist Security Blog to provide a live forum for the exchange of knowledge in this rapidly evolving field. CPJ has scaled up emergency aid to journalists at risk. In 2012, its Journalist Assistance program aided a record number of journalistsproviding support for urgent medical treatment, legal defense, and refugee claims. While Africa continues to be the region with the most emergency appeals from journalists, CPJ is responding to an influx of cases from the Middle East amid political unrest. CPJ is planning a major conference with partner groups in 2013 to improve aid to the growing numbers of journalists exiled from Iran and Syria. CPJ has expanded its global reach. Its website, cpj.org, features contributions from journalists and bloggers around the world and includes sections in Arabic, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. The organization translates major reports into relevant languages, such as Farsi, Mandarin and Urdu. Its network of correspondents includes team members in Mexico City, Bogot, So Paulo, Moscow, Istanbul, Abuja, Nairobi, Cape Town, and Bangkok. Advocacy representatives are stationed in London and Brussels. A wider international presence enables CPJ to respond quickly to press freedom emergencies, intervene directly with local authorities responsible for abuses, and work with partners to strengthen protections for journalists. CPJ is building up its ability to carry out longer-term, strategic advocacy and campaigning to secure changes in law, policy, and practice affecting press freedom. CPJs high profile enables the organization to shine an international spotlight on press freedom abuses and build pressure for reforms. Journalists have told CPJ that its advocacy efforts helped secure their release from prison, forced officials to back down from efforts to intimidate them into silence, and literally saved their lives. | Description |
