| Description | The Houston Parks Board's Land Acquisition Program is focused on the expansion of the City's park system, in partnership with the City's Parks and Recreation Department, Harris County Flood Control District and other entities. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for Houstonians by acquiring more parkland to ensure availability of equitably distributed park spaces as the city continues its aggressive growth. One area of particular focus is acquiring green spaces along the bayous to help improve flood prevention while providing park amenities for the community. A significant component in accomplishing this goal is constructing trails along the bayous. In FY 2012 HPB began design work and continued land acquisition work on White Oak Bayou and Brays Bayou. The HPB Land Acquisition Program acquired $664,245 in property for additional greenspaces and granted $63,441 to the Houston Parks Board LGC for purchase of land assets. HPB also granted $15,724 to the City of Houston for purchase of land assets. In the fiscal year ending 6/30/2012, the HPB Board approved a contribution of $70,000 to the newly formed Parks For Greater Houston for the purpose of encouraging the passage of a bond issue to fund park projects. | Description |

| Explanation | The Houston Parks Board (HPB) solicits gifts and bequests for park acquisitions, additions, and improvements within the city of Houston and the surrounding metropolitan area. From time to time, it transfers land to or purchases land for the City of Houston or the Houston Parks Board LGC, a local government corporation that was formed to hold the parkland and improvements of HPB. During this fiscal year, HPB Board also approved a contribution of $70,000 to Parks For Greater Houston to assist with its first year of operations. HPB also acts as an agent for the City of Houston regarding certain funds that are maintained on behalf of the City. Two such funds provide scholarships to students. The Houston Parks and Recreation Department's A.S.K. Group and the First Tee Program determine the ASK and Dave Marr scholarship recipients and have HPB write a check directly to the school the student is attending.
