| Description | The Holden Arboretum is an outdoor living museum that promotes the beauty and importance of trees and other woody plants, to create sustainable and healthy communities in the Great Lakes region and beyond. Holden's programs are integrated to foster its vision of "a Northeast Ohio in which trees, forests, and gardens provide maximum ecological and social benefits to the region's people and communities". Organization During the past fiscal year, Holden continued to build on its 2009 strategic plan which identified three primary themes around which all of its programs would focus: (1) growing trees and communities, promoting the creation and care of interconnected networks of trees and wooded environments to sustain the ecological health of the communities where we live and work; (2) conserving native forests, fostering conservation of the diversity, health, function and ecological services of natural forested ecosystems in our region's human-impacted landscapes; and (3) engaging children with plants, instilling in children an appreciation for and knowledge of plants and their environments, so they will apply that value and understanding as adults. The strategic plan and one of its key outgrowths, the "Holden Storybook" (a compilation of themes in which Holden wishes to engage its diverse audiences), served as the basis for crafting Holden's "New Leaf" master plan for improved gardens, visitor amenities, and infrastructure in the arboretum's core 240 acres. Of the many projects included in New Leaf, several were selected for Phase One fundraising and implementation: (1) a new irrigation well and reservoir, to replace Holden's previous use of Corning Lake water, which had unacceptably high iron content; (2) a renovated Corning Library to become more attractive and functional; (3) a new 500-foot tree alle, running between the site of a future new visitor center and the new rhododendron garden; (4) a new 4.5-acre Rhododendron Discovery Garden; (5) a deer fence to enclose the core 240 acres; (6) a canopy walk to introduce students and visitors to the biology of the forest canopy, 60 feet above the ground; (7) a 120-foot tower that will emerge over the top of the forest canopy, enabling visitors to appreciate landscape diversity and to offer a view of Lake Erie; and (8) a renewed Corning Lake and Lotus Pond, including an exemplary connection between them. The past year was highlighted by the May openings of the R. Henry Norweb Jr. Tree Alle and the Eliot and Linda Paine Rhododendron Discovery Garden, in recognition of two outstanding executive directors in Holden's history, as well as generous donors and descendants. The alle is unique in featuring five different tree species, instead of a typical single-species monoculture. The new rhododendron garden combines beauty with telling core Holden stories: rhododendron evolution and diversity, selection and hybridization for garden use, and successful rhododendron garden even in poorly drained clay soils. Campaign fundraising for New Leaf Phase One has proceeded on schedule. At the end of FY2013 (September 30, 2013), with a pledge of $1M to cover the construction of the canopy walk and emergent tower, the goal for the first phase was raised to $8.5M. At the end of September 2013, $8.2M had been raised in pledges and gifts. The tree alle and the discovery garden were completed in FY2012-13. In Fiscal year 2013-14, construction will begin on the canopy walk and the emergent tower with completion in 2015. The restoration of Corning Lake and Lotus Pond will begin in the summer of 2014 with a completion date in 2015. Construction of the deer fence surrounding the 240 core acres will begin in 2014 or 2015. The following account of our achievements is organized according to the three strategic themes, augmented by the general heading "Place and Purpose", under which we include how the public values Holden as a wonderful place to visit and an institution that improves their communities' general well-being. Growing Trees and Communities Horticulture During the spring and fall planting seasons, 3,122 trees and shrubs and over 6,660 herbaceous plants were planted. There are currently 5,502 different living plant taxa (species, varieties and cultivars) in the collections, of which 3,591 are trees, shrubs and woody vines. The holdings of the herbarium increased to 3,051 preserved plant specimens. The Plant Collections Curator continued to provide horticultural information to the public year-round, and responded to 244 contacts during the year with questions on plant identification, landscape plant selection and sources, horticultural practices and a range of related subjects. As a participant in the International Seed Exchange, Holden Nursery Staff distributed 244 packets of seed representing 11 different species native to Ohio on request and at no charge to 84 sister institutions in 29 countries around the world and 1 state within the U.S. As part of the "New Leaf" master plan, 2 new gardens opened in spring of 2013: The Eliot and Linda Paine Rhododendron Discovery Garden (RDG), and the R. Henry Norweb Jr.Tree Alle. RDG is a 4.5 acre garden featuring rhododendrons and their relatives, with 2,788 woody plants (703 in genus Rhododendron) installed in 2013 and approximately 700 herbaceous plants. The Tree Alle is 500 feet long with 57 trees of 5 different species represented. In addition, new landscape construction took place in the existing Helen S. Layer Rhododendron garden. Existing plants of poor quality were removed, 440 linear feet of drainage installed, followed by 320 linear feet of stone retaining walls. Final grading and plant installation will take place in spring of 2014. Research and Plant Introduction In FY13, research staff published one paper and had a second paper accepted in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Research staff presented at scientific meetings and presented popular lectures to green industry professionals, garden clubs and Holden members. Presentations focused on plant breeding efforts and included conferences at Longwood Gardens, the International Plant Trials Conference and the International Plant Propagators Southern Region Conference. In addition, presentations given to garden clubs and industry groups included the Western Reserve Herb Society, the Toronto Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society and the Chicago Botanical Garden. A class in plant breeding and selection was also held at the Leach Research Station. Research staff submitted two proposals to federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Agriculture. Research focused on resistance to root rot disease in rhododendrons caused by the soil pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi as well as heat tolerance in native populations of rhododendrons and linkage between heat tolerance and disease resistance. Stephen Krebs, PhD, completed a successful plant collection effort aimed at two native species of Rhododendron from populations in the southeastern United States that occupy a range of latitudes and elevations (encompassing USDA hardiness zones 5-8). These populations formed the basis for greenhouse testing on heat tolerance and root rot resistance. Field trials continue to screen heat tolerant R. hyperythrum hybrids through the John Thornton program in Louisiana for resistance to P. cinnamomi, as a means of determining whether resistance may have been a factor in selection under warm (zone 8) conditions. Holden completed shipment of R. hyperythrum F1 breeding selections to a Louisiana field trial site (total 160 selections, 4-6 plants of each) in the fall of 2012 and data on performance of initial plantings was collected after one growing season in fall of 2013. This project is being done in collaboration with Plant Development Services Inc. in Mobile, AL. There has been some mortality of the planted selections, but the majorities are showing evidence of disease resistance and therefore these plants have significant commercial potential in a new and large horticultural market. Evaluation will continue in FY14. The Leach Station is the primary plant breeding facility at the Holden Arboretum and the Leach Oversight Committee met in June of 2013 to discuss station activities, maintenance and to provide oversight. The committee consisted of Stephen Krebs, David Burke, and Clement Hamilton (Holden staff) as well as Robert Schutzki (Michigan State University), Pablo Jourdan (Ohio State University), Donald Rakow (Cornell University), and David Leach, Jr. The committee was generally happy with the management and activities of the station, and discussed at length increasing efforts at plant introduction of Leach Station selections.
