DescriptionClassical Season HighlightsThroughout 2012-2013, the Houston Symphonys 99th season, the organization celebrated the farewell of Music Director Hans Graf. After twelve years of exemplary leadership, Graf stepped down in May 2013 as the longest serving music director in the Symphonys near 100-year history. Concerts highlighted the talents of the 87-member orchestra and 200-member chorus along with many special guest artists in performances that spanned Grafs most revered composers and musical genres. The highest grossing classical concert was Lang Lang Plays Beethoven yielding $171,000 in single ticket sales and 5,836 total tickets.Music Director Hans Graf and the orchestra performed two concerts in Moscow, Russia, in June 2012 as a part of the 7th Annual Festival of the World's Symphony Orchestras. The Houston Symphony was the first ever American orchestra to participate in the festival, which is known as the highlight of the Moscow musical season. Concert programming included Mozarts Symphony No. 38, Prague; Bruckners Symphony No. 9; John Adams Doctor Atomic Symphony; and Shostakovichs Symphony No. 11, The Year 1905.The first three weeks of the classical subscription season in September 2012 were billed as the Best of Brahms Festival. The concerts allowed audiences to take an in-depth look at many of Brahms most beloved and blissful works including his four symphonies, two piano concertos, the double concerto for violin and cello and the German Requiem. In October, superstar pianist Lang Lang performed Beethovens Piano Concertos No. 2, 3 and 5 with the Houston Symphony a different concerto each night of the subscription weekend. In March 2013, Graf and the orchestra performed two nights of Alban Bergs edgy and groundbreaking opera, Wozzeck. The opera-in-concert format featured European powerhouse vocalists and Wozzeck experts, Roman Trekel in the title role and Anne Schwanewilms as Marie. In May 2013, the classical season concluded with A Graf Farewell, two special performances of Mahlers Symphony No. 2 Resurrection, one of Grafs favorite orchestral works. Other classical specials included a performance with Andrea Bocelli in Houstons Toyota Center for more than 12,000 fans; Handels Messiah in Jones Hall; a concert at the University of St. Thomas; and Israel at 65.The ACCESS series, an interactive approach to classical music with host Miles Hoffman of NPRs Morning Edition, continued into its second season of Friday night concerts. The Sugar Land series also continued into its second season of 3 concerts attracting 3,626 to Sugar Land Baptist Church for performances of Berlioz Symphonie fantastique, Handels Messiah, and Mozarts Symphony No. 40.Throughout the season, many Houston Symphony musicians were in the solo spotlight including Frank Huang, concertmaster; Brinton Averil Smith, principal cellist; Thomas LeGrand, associate principal clarinet; Aralee Dorough, principal flute; Judy Dines, flute; Alexandra Adkins, violin; Sophia Silivos, violin; William VerMeulen, principal horn; Adam Dinitz, English horn; and Mark Hughes, principal trumpet.Concertmaster Frank Huang became a last-minute sensation in Bartoks dizzying Violin Concerto No. 2 when he substituted for violinist Augustin Hadelich, who was stranded in the U.S. Northeast due to Superstorm Sandy. Guest artists returning in 2012-2013 included violinists Leonidas Kavakos, Benjamin Schmid, and Eugene Ugorski; baritone Roman Trekel; pianists Garrick Ohlsson, Stephen Hough, Jonathan Biss and Lang Lang; and vocalists Erin Wall and Bernarda Fink.In addition to German pianist Martin Helmchen Helmchen, other guest artists who made their debut in 2012-2013 included pianist Ariane Haering, pianist Janina Fialkowska, violinist Vilde Frang and European soprano sensation Anne Schwanewilms as Marie in Wozzeck.Guest conductors returning in 2012-2013 included Matthew Halls, John Storgrds, Pablo Heras-Casado, Juanjo Mena, Thomas Dausgaard, Christoph Koenig, Gilbert Varga, Hannu Lintu and Carlos Kalmar. One guest conductor who made his debut in October 2012 ultimately became the Houston Symphonys next music director. On January 16, 2013, the organization announced that Colombian-born, Vienna-trained Andrs Orozco-Estrada would become the orchestras first Hispanic, and 15th overall, music director. Orozco-Estradas five-year contract will commence in the 2014-2015 season. Pops Season HighlightsThe nine-concert Pops series featured a wide variety of programming in the 2012-2013 season including a world premiere in September 2012 of Sixties Hits with The Midtown Men.The highest grossing Pops concert was Bond and Beyond: 50 Years of James Bond yielding $128,300 in single ticket sales and 6,243 total tickets.Guest artists who joined the Houston Symphony at Jones Hall for Pops concerts included The Midtown Men; Broadway stars Alli Mauzey and Nicole Parker; a salute to the 50-year-old James Bond movie franchise with Principal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski and vocalist Debbie Gravitte; Broadways Ashley Brown; jazz trumpeter Byron Stripling; A.J. Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle; Michael Cavanaugh; and Pink Martini. In March 2013, the Houston Symphony played the musical score of West Side Story, accompanying a newly re-mastered, high-definition version of the 50-year-old film projected on a large screen above the stage.POPS Symphony Specials included concerts with Smokey Robinson, The Chieftains and Sound-Plus-Vision multimedia offerings of The Pirates of the Caribbean and Disney in ConcertSummerSummer Specials known as Symphony Summer in the City included The Legend of Zelda, Three Dog Night, The Wizard of Oz, and Orbit An HD Odyssey. These summer events have become a Houston tradition, with a combined audience of more than 35,000.Family ConcertsEach year, the Symphonys outreach programming features four family concerts, targeted to children ages 4 to 11. For the 2012-13 season, these performances were led by Associate Conductor Robert Franz. The themes for the 2012-13 season, attended by 16,182 children and their families, were Wands and Batons: The Music of Harry Potter & More, Hip Hoppin Nutcracker, Aladdin and the Arabian Nights, and Dinosaurs! The highest grossing was Hip Hoppin Nutcracker with $25,400 and 4,802 attendanceServing HoustonTo honor its longstanding commitment to community service, the Houston Symphony offers free or low-cost concerts to thousands of people each year through its education and community engagement programs. The Symphonys activities also feature master classes, instrumental instruction, student competitions, small ensemble performances and lectures. These initiatives are designed to ensure that Houstonians of all ages and backgrounds, including the underserved, the economically disadvantaged and those with physical or mental disabilities, have an opportunity to learn about and enjoy outstanding orchestral music. The summertime Sounds Like Fun! Series featured 7 free concerts throughout the city of Houston, attracting more than 4,000 people. The annual free concert Fiesta Sinfonica celebrated Hispanic Heritage month and drew another capacity crowd of more than 2,000 music lovers to Jones Hall. Music Director Hans Graf was the featured conductor in September 2012.In October 2012, the Symphony once again performed at Lunada, a free community concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre, produced by the Mexican Institute of Greater Houston. The orchestra performed a free holiday themed concert for patients, guests and medical professionals at The Methodist Hospital on December 10.In 2012-2013, the David Dewhurst Education Series provided 14 performances for students. The series, which encompasses the Symphony Detective Concerts for 1st through 3rd graders and Cameron Symphony Explorer Concerts for 4th through 8th graders, provided outstanding music education to nearly 36,000 public, private and home-schooled students in more than 250 schools across 20 Houston-area school districts. Nearly 10,000 students attended the six Symphony Detective performances, representing a 3 percent increase over the prior season, and more than 21,200 students, just 400 below maximum capacity, attended the eight Symphony Explorer concerts at Jones Hall.Description
