Collections of ArtSCHEDULE D, PART III, QUESTIONS 1A AND 4PACE UNIVERSITY HAS SEVERAL ART GALLERIES BETWEEN ITS PLEASANTVILLE AND NEW YORK CITY CAMPUSES THAT SERVE THE GENERAL STUDENT POPULATION WITH COURSES AND EXHIBITIONS. DONATED ARTWORK INCLUDES PHOTOGRAPHS, PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES AND IS DISPLAYED ON VARIOUS INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR CAMPUS LOCATIONS AND IN SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE VISUAL LITERACY AS PART OF THE UNIVERSITY LEARNING EXPERIENCE. AS THE VALUE OF SUCH COLLECTIONS IS NOT MATERIAL TO THE UNIVERSITY AS A WHOLE, THE FOOTNOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS DO NOT INCLUDE RELATED TEXT.
INTENDED USES OF ENDOWMENT FUNDSSCHEDULE D, PART V, QUESTION 4The University's endowment consists of approximately 390 individual funds established for a variety of purposes, including support of scholarships, academic programs, academic chairs, student activities, research, institutional support and capital projects. Our endowment includes both donor restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowments (quasi endowments). The University's investments are managed to achieve the maximum prudent long term total return. The University's board of trustees has authorized a policy designed to preserve the value of these investments in real terms (after inflation) and provide a predictable flow of funds to support operations.
FEDERAL INCOME TAXSCHEDULE D, PART X, LINE 2At June 30, 2013 and 2012, the University had no liabilities recorded for uncertain tax positions.

General Explanation GeneralExplanation (9 entries)

IdentifierIdentifierReturn ReferenceReturnReferenceExplanationExplanation
Form 990 Review ProcessCore Form, Part VI, Section B, Line 11AThe Form 990 is prepared by the University's Controller. It is reviewed by the University's President, Chief Financial Officer and in-house legal counsel. A review is also performed by the University's outside tax advisors. The draft Form 990 is then presented to the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees for approval, followed by distribution of the final copy of the Form 990 to all members of the Board of Trustees before it is filed.
COMPLIANCE WITH CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICYCORE FORM, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 12(C)Annual officer and key employee disclosure forms are reviewed by the Associate Vice President of Human Resources and University Counsel. Potential officer and key employee conflicts are vetted with supervisors in consultation with the Associate Vice President of Human Resources and University Counsel. Annual trustee disclosure forms are reviewed by University Counsel, who prepares a spreadsheet listing trustee conflicts for the Board's committee on trustees. This list is used as a guide to ensure that conflicted trustees are recused from discussions and votes when appropriate.
PROCESS FOR DETERMINING COMPENSATION FOR OFFICERS AND KEY EMPLOYEESCORE FORM, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 15Each year, the Chair of the Board of Trustees asks the Human Resources department of the University to collect comparative presidential compensation data from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR), as well as published 990 data from such sources as the Chronicle of Higher Education, to use in setting the annual compensation of the President of the University for the upcoming year. With respect to other University officers, each year prior comparability data from our peer institutions is collected and summarized for review by the President(9 comparable doctoral class institutions of similar size, scope and organizational complexity, locally and nationally, that are used as comparators for several academic and financial scopes across the university). This data, which is obtained via survey, and, in some years, via outside independent consultant, is used by the President, to propose compensation adjustments to the independent Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees. The University's President does not take part in Board votes relating to matters involving his compensation, benefits and other terms and conditions of his employment, or participate in or attend Board discussions relating thereto, except he may provide information or respond to questions when requested to do so by the Compensation Committee. The University further has a robust performance evaluation process in place, the results of which are considered during the compensation determination process. The competitive data is also used in determining compensation offers for new hires at the executive level. Once this data is collected and presented for approval by the Compensation Committee and the Board of Trustees, documentation of the decisions and the discussions surrounding those decisions are written by the Special Assistant to the Board of Trustees and filed with the University Archivist, along with the minutes of the meetings for documentation and historical record.
FINANCIAL ACCOUNTS IN A FOREIGN COUNTRYCORE FORM, PART V, LINE 4The University's financial holdings in a foreign country were limited to equity interests in commingled investment vehicles. Accordingly, the University was not required to file Form TD F 90-22.1 Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts.
AVAILABILITY OF GOVERNING AND OTHER DOCUMENTS TO THE PUBLICCORE FORM, PART VI, SECTION C, LINE 19The University's financial statements and conflict of interest policy are posted on its website. Form 990 and 990-T are available upon request. The University's governing documents are not available to the public.
