DescriptionOur programs provide youth development for the digital age, leveraging the technologies that young people are already curious about to introduce them to skills, ideas and pathways that will enable them to become the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.Since 2000, more than 23,000 students have participated in MOUSE programs, providing valued technical support and leadership for more than 1.8 million students, teachers and administrators in their schools and communities. As a result of participating in MOUSE, students report: 92% Improved communications, leadership and teambuilding skills 92% Increased confidence 91% Improved problem solving skills 88% Better prepared for college 70% More motivated to pursue a career in STEMMOUSE SquadThe MOUSE Squad program trains students to become digital media and technology experts in their schools, improving the use of technology to enhance learning, while also building confidence and developing skills for 21st century innovation. MOUSE connects students around shared interests as a national network of youth technology leaders.MOUSE Squad provides specialist curriculum and hands-on events to give youth opportunities to deepen their skills and interests in tech innovation, including robotics, game design and web-making. 3,867 Students participating in the MOUSE Squad program 406 Educators participating in the MOUSE Squad program 4,273 Total MOUSE Squad active learners 227 MOUSE sites nationwide 69% of students at MOUSE Squad schools were eligible for free and reduced price lunch 13 States: California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, WashingtonMOUSE CorpsBuilding on our students interest in creating and building new technologies, MOUSE Corps is a youth design and technology program for high school students from MOUSE Squads across New York City.As MOUSE Corps members, students brainstorm, prototype and present a technology project that addresses a social need, developing their skills and experiences with technology mentors in real life professional settings. With 23 students participating, this year's MOUSE Corps group researched, designed and prototyped 4 innovative Legacy Projects in 2013, all addressing technology needs identified by users at client-partner organization United Cerebral Palsy of NYC: Art-Squared: an assistive remote-controlled 2-dimensional painter tool for artists with Cerebral Palsy. Extend-a-Arm: a crutches-mounted robotic grabbing tool to extend the reach of people with Cerebral Palsy. JoyPix: a joy-stick controlled adapted camera case and mount for photographers with Cerebral Palsy in wheelchairs. Mixing Buddy: a hacked cooking mixer with an accessible on-off switch that helps people with Cerebral Palsy cook independently.Other Program Highlights Learning Events: MOUSE offered 118 On-site Trainings, MOUSE Squad TeamTraining workshops for 138 students across NYC and our 9th Annual Coordinator-Con for MOUSE educators, held for the first time this year at Google. MOUSE Squad UnPlugged Events: MOUSE hosted 10 UnPlugged opportunities for students and teachers to come be a part of live programming in New York City. These included MakerFaire, Garage Robotics workshops, digital storytelling with the LAMP and Mozilla Popcorn Maker, MakerBot educator and student workshops, a game jam at BrainPOP with Global Kids, and a fall and spring PlayTech Saturday game testing event at Parsons the New School. 5th Annual Emoti-Con! NYC Youth Media & Technology Challenge: At Emoti-Con!, students from three MOUSE Squad schools presented projects including a serious game about bullying, an electric guitar made out of Legos and an Arduino, and a multimedia e-book with young people's stories about Hurricane Sandy in the Rockaways. MOUSE Corps presented their four new assistive technology projects, two of which scored finalist awards (for Most Innovative and Point of View), and one of these also won the Crowd Favorite award! Competitions: MOUSE engaged Squads across the country with monthly MicroProject Competitions, this year adding the ability for students to directly recognize other projects they deem worthy with wins for creativity, technical savvy, or inspirational content. Squads also had the opportunity to recognized as one of our MOUSE Squads of the Year and as winners of our DIY Competition. School/District Partnerships: MOUSE is excited to have quintupled our presence in schools outside the three major networks, growing from 7 single-site schools at the end of FY12 to 35 at the end of FY13, including our partnerships with the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation, National Heritage Academy schools, and our first school in Idaho at Kuna High School. GreenTECH: MOUSE made great progress with its GreenTECH curriculum during FY13, as a result of a grant from the National Science Foundation in partnership with Solar One. Pilot sites include Queens Vocational and Technical High School and Baruch College Campus High School. MakerBot: With thanks to our partners at MakerBot, approximately 440 students from 22 MOUSE Squads across the city using 3D printing to transform learning in their schools. MakerBot and MOUSE led training events for Coordinators and teachers and offered our first 3D Printing and Design UnPlugged workshop for students in March. White House Science Fair: MOUSE Corps student Zainab was one of only 100 youth nationwide to be selected to attend the 3rd annual White House Science fair as a representative of her teams Legacy Project from last year, the Dining Band, and of the Hive NYC program. In FY13, MOUSE Corps shared their amazing projects at an unprecedented number of venues: NYTech Meetup, the White House Science Fair, MOUSE's 15th Anniversary Maker space, the Emoti-Con! NYC Youth Media and Technology Challenge, the International Society for Technology in Education Conference in San Antonio, the Interaction Design & Children conference, the National Charter Schools Conference and of course at MakerFaire every fall.Description
