THAT AREA WAS PARTICULARLY AFFECTED BY THE LACK OF LEGAL AID UNTIL THIS PROJECT WAS LAUNCHED BY BWLAP. THIS PROJECT STARTED IN OCTOBER 2010 & BWLAP HIRED 2 ATTORNEYS WHO WERE LOCATED IN THE AREA BEING SERVED. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM BWLAP SERVED VICTIMS PROVIDING LEGAL REPRESENTATION IN CASES OF DIVORCE, CUSTODY, PARENTING TIME & ORDERS FOR PROTECTION, AMONG OTHERS, & DEVELOPED SAFETY PLANS & PROVIDED REFERRALS TO NEEDED HEALTH & SOCIAL SERVICES. WE PROVIDED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE & REFERRALS TO ADVOCATES IN 871 CASES, TO BATTERED WOMEN IN 789 CASES, THE REST WERE CONSULTATIONS RECEIVED BY ATTORNEYS WORKING WITH VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. LESS THAN HALF OF THOSE CONSULTATIONS WERE PROVIDED FROM THE METRO AREA & THE REST MAINLY FROM RURAL MN. DURING THE YEAR WE WORKED WITH VICTIMS OF CRIMES SEEKING RELIEF FROM THE U.S. CITIZENSHIP & IMMIGRATION SERVICES. 2) SYSTEMS CHANGE BWLAP IS FREQUENTLY SEEKING WAYS TO IMPROVE THE LEGAL SYSTEMS RESPONSE TO BATTERED WOMEN, WHETHER THROUGH THE PASSAGE OF NEW LEGISLATION, OR THE ENFORCEMENT OF CURRENT LAWS. ACTIVITIES ARE AIMED AT REDUCING BARRIERS, ELIMINATING DISCRIMINATION & CREATING LONG-TERM SYSTEMS OF CHANGE.
