MissionThe MCA is an innovative and compelling center of contemporary art where the public can directly experience the work and ideas of living artists, and understand the historical, social and cultural context of the art of our time. The Museum boldly interweaves exhibitions, performances, collections, and educational programs to excite, challenge, and illuminate our visitors and to provide insight into the creative process. The MCA aspires to engage a broad and diverse audience, create a sense of community and be a place for contemplation, stimulation, and discussion about contemporary art and culture.MissionDesc

Desc(4a) Exhibitions: The MCA presented 10 major and 9 smaller exhibitions in FY 2014 and welcomed 152,633 visitors. Total FY2014 attendance was 263,806. From July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014, the MCA's curatorial team continued to present thought provoking exhibitions aligned with the museum's vision. MCA exhibitions offer a new model for how a contemporary art museum can best serve and stimulate its public, and new works are regularly commissioned and brought into the MCA collection out of its exhibition program. A) Homebodies (June 29 to October 13, 2013): Homebodies presented work by contemporary artists from six continents who examine the space of the home, both literally and figuratively, as an integral site for making art. Through these varied points of view, visitors were presented with a complex view of the domestic: the home as a site where art is made, as a familiar place that invites closer scrutiny, and as the setting for psychological investigations or even dramatic self-transformations. B) Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes (June 29 to October 13, 2013): Modern Cartoonist, the first museum retrospective of acclaimed comic book and graphic artist Daniel Clowes's work, assembled a comprehensive collection of Clowes's original drawings and provided audiences with an uncommon occasion to explore his studio practice in the public setting of the museum, as well as explore the evolution of his aesthetic, and his complicated relationship with Chicago, the city where he was raised and lived early in his career. C) The Way of the Shovel: Art as Archaeology (November 12, 2013 to March 9, 2014): The Way of the Shovel traced the interest in history, archaeology, and archival research that defines some of the most highly regarded art of the last decade. Consisting almost entirely of work produced after the year 2000, The Way of the Shovel re-imagined the art world as an alternative "History Channel" that is as concerned with remembering histories as it is with challenging their truthfulness. D) Isa Genzken: Retrospective (April 12-August 13, 2014): Isa Genzken presented the first large-scale retrospective of this renowned sculptor in an American museum. This retrospective encompassed Genzken's work in all media, produced over the past three decades, and secured Genzken's legacy as a transgenerational force in international contemporary art. The Ascendant Artist series spotlights the MCA's commitment to the art of our time by presenting talented artists in their first significant museum exhibitions: E) Paul Sietsema (September 7, 2013 to January 5, 2014) showcased the artist's exploration of the nature of objects and images through a wide range of media. Sietsema's practice embodies his meditation on what it means to make art and the role of an artist today-amid the barrage of images; the telescoping of past, present, and future that instant access to information seems to provide; and the ease with which digital means can present alternate realities. F) William J. O'Brien (January 25 to May 18, 2014) demonstrated the prolific output of this Chicago-based artist in a broad range of media, from sculpture and ceramics to drawing, textiles, and painting. The exhibition developed new language around O'Brien's contemporary abstract artworks-language that focused on process rather than individual expression or technique and that considered his body of work as a reflection of a multitude of cultural sources. O'Brien is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. MCA Collection exhibitions are comprised mostly of works from the MCA Collection and supplemented by loans from the Chicago community: G) Think First, Shoot Later (May 18 to November 10, 2013) examined many of the defining artists and themes in conceptual photography over the past four decades. Featuring a highly diverse range of artists who borrow freely across the range of photographic possibilities, Think First, Shoot Later gave audiences a sense of some of the most dominant issues defining the field of photography today. Desc4(b) EDUCATION: The MCA is Chicago's only museum dedicated to the art of our times serving 26,849 attendees. As an integral component of the museum's mission, the MCA offered a full range of educational programs during the 2013-2014 program year for elementary and high school audiences, including artist-led exhibition tours and hands-on Creation Labs, as well as a complement of professional enrichment opportunities for educators. Education programs continue to serve a diverse pool of Chicago Public Schools students and teachers, and are provided to all Chicago Public Schools on a complimentary basis to facilitate access and encourage broad participation. A) The MCA continued its successful school tour programs for teachers and students in grades 1 -12. Our School Tours programs continue to be the cornerstone of our Education programs and provide the broadest exposure to contemporary art for students in grades 1-12. This year, our School Tours program reached over 9,800 students with 89 percent of the participating schools serving students with identified needs and programs. B) The MCA's program for 15-19 year olds, Teen Creative Agency (TCA), completed its third year during the summer 2014, and the inaugural group of teens has now segued into program alumni. Guided by two local artists who facilitated the weekly sessions, TCA members led in-gallery activities, took monthly trips to cultural organizations, Chicago neighborhoods and artist studios, and worked alongside MCA staff and artists on projects. C) From its origins as a week-long summer experience, the MCA Teacher Institute has evolved into a year-long engagement initiative - the museum's most immersive and intensive professional development program for teachers. During this year's Institute, creative practitioners used contemporary art and MCA resources to explore their teaching practice, experiment with classroom curriculum, and collaborate with other teachers to learn about other teaching styles. D) Our popular Family Day programming continued with more than 875 families participating in the program (families with children under the age of 12 receive complimentary admission on the second Saturday of each month, October - May). E) As part of our wide-ranging Education programs, the MCA presented a diverse range of public programs including conversations, lectures, and panels that explore the visual and intellectual complexities of contemporary art and design and their connection to culture and history.Desc

Desc(4c) PERFORMANCES: The MCA continued to offer an aggressive performance schedule, complete with unique offerings and collaborations with other cultural institutions during the MCA Stage's 18th anniversary season. Here are some highlights from the season. A) Taylor Mac A History of Political Popular Music (Sept 27-28): The wildly imaginative drag legend creates community with his expansive concert project, mining the history of music and culture. B) Timber 4 Tercer Cuerpo (Third Wing) (Oct 3-6): The last five occupants of an obsolete office building remain, searching for meaning and insight in the daily activities and illogic of human existence. C) ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble) John Zorn Retrospective (Oct 26): Zorn, a pillar of experimental music, is a prolific musician and composer. Marking his 60th year, he composed four new works for ICE, including a large ensemble piece premiering at this concert; and Alvin Lucier (March 21-23): ICE performs work by Alvin Lucier, a trailblazing force for over 50 years. Lucier opens our awareness of the nature of sound and language, using the simplest of means to create beautiful and ethereal aural phenomena. D) Rainpan 43 Elephant Room (Nov 2-10): This absurd performance takes the form of a magic show to embrace and expose the currency of deception in contemporary American culture. Elephant Room is ridiculous and poetic, shameless and sincere. As three semi-pro magicians posture and hide behind their smoke and mirrors, they engage us by exposing their vulnerability. E) Sandra Bernhard Sandyland (Dec 5-7): A one-woman show accompanied by her band, showcasing her original intellect, tough cultural commentary, and distinctive glamour. F) Lola Arias El año en que naci (Jan 23-26): A group of artists born under a dictatorship rebuild their parents' youth from photographs, letters, tapes, used clothing, stories, and forgotten memories. G) Kyle Abraham The Radio Show (Feb 20-23): One of the hottest young choreographers in the United States, Kyle Abraham often grounds his works in his life history. In The Radio Show audience members experience two seminal events-the abrupt closing of a favorite hometown radio station and the slow breakdown of communication as a family member descends into Alzheimers and aphasia. H) Elevator Repair Service Arguendo (March 14-16): This piece is built from the verbatim transcript of a Supreme Court case brought by a group of Indiana go-go dancers who claimed a First Amendment right to dance totally nude. The drama that emerges is in turns absurd, hilarious, provocative and intellectually compelling - as the justices debate the definition of dance, nudity in opera houses vs. strip-clubs and whether naked erotic dancing is artistic expression or a crime. I) Rabih Mroue and Lina Saneh 33 Rounds and a few seconds (April 10-12): The piece invites us to follow a fictional Lebanese man who has killed himself during the Arab Spring uprising. There are no actors on the stage, only the young man's bedroom, in which the his television, mobile phone, computer and Facebook page reveal and extend his life even after death, as the personal and the political intertwine. J) Maud Le Pladec Democracy (May 3-4): A new work by an important young post-minimalist choreographer who explores relations of music and movement in depth. Her dancers' bodies become part of the musical score; Democracy is set to music by Julia Wolfe, one of the acclaimed founders of Bang on a Can performed live by Ensemble TaCTuS. K) Baryshnikov Productions with Big Dance Theater Man in a Case (May 15-18): Internationally acclaimed dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov teams up with Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar, the creative duo behind Big Dance Theater, to act in this experimental theater work based on two of Anton Chekhov's 1898 short stories. Through the device of a tale within a tale, two friends on a hunting trip share stories late into the night. In "The Man in a Case," a rigid and officious man's attempted courtship of a vibrant young woman forces him to come face to face with his limitations, while "About Love" relives one man's inability to act on his passion for a woman he truly loves.Desc

$1,430,012$0$2,483(4d) COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: To implement the MCA's strategic vision, the Communications and Community Engagement (CCE) team plays a crucial role in activating the MCA as an audience-engaged platform for producing art, ideas, community, and conversation around the creative process. CCE takes a lead role in building relationships with Chicago's many diverse communities while establishing the museum as integral within our city. A targeted mix of print, digital, and outdoor advertisements, as well as consistent editorial media coverage, make the museum widely visible in Chicago and out of town. Collaborations with cultural partners is another important way the team promotes audience-sharing with the city. Online audiences benefit from substantive and interactive web resources that range from the museum's website and high-quality videos to our highly active social media presence on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages.

Schedule D, Part III, Line 1Schedule D, Part III, Line 1 - In conformity with the practice commonly followed by most American art museums, the value of the Museum's collection is not included in the financial statements. Contributions for the purchase of art objects, the proceeds from deaccessions of art and the cost of art objects purchased are reported as other changes in net assets in the statement of activities. The Museum's policy is to maintain and continue to acquire significant works of contemporary art (principally 1945 to present). From time to time, objects may be sold in accordance with the Museum's collection management policy. Deaccessions may result if one of the following conditions has been met: (a) physical condition has deteriorated to a point beyond display or study; or (b) an object is believed to be no longer pertinent to the scope of the Museum's collection. All proceeds realized from deaccessions are allocated to purchase other works of art. Proceeds from deaccessions amounted to $6,980 and $521,995 for the years ended June 30, 2014 and 2013, respectively.
Schedule D, Part III, Line 4The collection is comprised of approximately 6,024 objects in all media created during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Through exhibitions, preservation and research, the collection supports the museum's mission to be an innovative and compelling center of contemporary art where the public can directly experience the work and ideas of living artists, and understand the historical, social, and cultural context of the art of our time.
Schedule D, Part V, Line 4The endowment funds are used to support the Museum's operations, subject to a spending policy. The Museum draws 5.0% of the average market value of assets over a 12 quarter period ending with the prior 12/31.
Schedule D, Part X, Line 2The Museum's application of GAAP USA regarding uncertain tax positions had no effect on its financial position as management believes the Museum has no material unrecognized income tax benefits, including any potential risk of loss of its not-for-profit tax status. The Museum would recognize interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax positions in interest and income tax expense, respectively. However, the Museum has no amounts accrued for interest or penalties as of June 30, 2014 and 2013. There are no ongoing federal, state, or local tax audits; however, the Museum's tax returns for 2010 and subsequent years remain open to examination.
Schedule D, Part XI, Line 2dInvestment Spending Policy Draw $3,225,000; Rental Expenses $534,353; COGS (Store) $2,604,107; Miscellaneous Expenses $11,063.
Schedule D, Part XI, Line 4bDividends and Interest $130,763; Realized Gains $948,551
