Primary Exempt PurposeMaki International's mission is to help impoverished women in Ayacucho, Peru through sustainable enterprise and education. Maki International works with women throughout Ayacucho, Peru, the location of the genocide and atrocities of the conflict between the Peruvian military and the Shining Path in the 1980's and 1990's, by providing the framework for creating, exporting, and selling the beautiful knit goods and handicrafts made using the Peruvian women's existing talents and traditions. Description Program Srvc AccomCurrently, Maki International is working with three groups of women in Ayacucho, Peru.Maki works with women in the prison, mostly incarcerated for drug trafficking. We offer knitting classes and design, pay the women for the products we have them make, and provide the knitted good to the U.S. market for purchase. In addition to knitting, we have classes in reading, art, and aerobics. We have created an alliance with the local university and bring in students to help in these endeavors. We have created a library in the women's prison and conduct book clubs. We continue to offer supplies and other necessiies for the preschool that we helped establish in the prison for the children under four years of age whom reside there with their mothers.Maki Intl works with the resouce center for abused women in much the same way we work with the women in the prison.With the Hilos Y Colores group in the mountains of Ayacucho, Maki provides avenues for the sales of their products in the United States and helps to forge their relationshiips with importers in other countries.With all three groups, Maki Intl offers lectures and discussions on self-esteem, childcare, parenting, nutrition, and various other subjects in which the participants request guidance.DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt
