DescFood Procurement: Secured and distributed more than $2.2 million in grant funds to 7 food banks as part of the GFBA Capital Capacity Building program to increase their capacity to acquire and distribute more fresh, perishable food and to support their goal of increasing the overall amount of food they are distributing by 7.5% per year over the next five years. Secured an increase in the $6.95 million annual grant administered by Atlanta Community Food Bank from State of Georgia to purchase protein/nutritious food for families with children. Successfully raised the equivalent of 1.1 million pounds of food for member food banks with 4th Annual Legal Food Frenzy with help from the Attorney General's Office and Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia. This friendly competition engaged more than 15,000 members of the legal community in the fight against hunger and added more than 500 new donors to member food banks. Successfully raised $100,000 for member food banks in the 2nd Annual Georgia Accounting Food Fight with the Georgia Society of CPA's by engaging 51 accounting firms in 7 cities in a two week competition to raise food and funds for GFBA food banks. In 2015, GFBA's "Farm to Food Bank" program generated donations of nearly 2.2 million pounds of fresh produce from Georgia Farmers to member food banks. An additional 5 million pounds of donated produce were shared with food banks in other parts of the country, who in turn shared produce back with Georgia to increase variety and product mix. The Farm to Food Bank Regional Fresh Produce Solicitor worked with Department of Agriculture, Georgia Farm Bureau, and Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association to educate farmers about their ability to donate produce to member food banks and solicit donations of fruits/vegetables. In 2015, GFBA received a 2 year, $7 million grant from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation for a "Capital Capacity Building Program" to increase the capacity of member food banks to handle more fresh and perishable food, including fresh produce. Most of these funds were regranted to the food banks subject to donor restrictions on eligible projects and food bank eligibility criteria.Desc

DescChildhood Hunger: GFBA entered into a strategic partnership with Share our Strength to launch the "Feeding for a Promising Future - No Kid Hungry" Campaign to increase the number of Children who have access to USDA nutrition programs like Summer Meals (SFSP), After School meals (CACFP) and increase the number of organizations participating in SNAP outreach to eligible families with children. In 2015, Arby's Foundation pledged an additional $1 million to accelerate this work. These funds were used for capital investments ($490,443) to organizations wanting to expand their feeding programs, a partnership to train school nurses with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and new strategies to connect kids to food and information about nutrition. The capital funds provided 687,239 additional meals for each dollar invested. In summer 2015, a total of 3,200 open feeding sites were operating with 600 new sites added. A total of 9,820,228 summer meals were served in Georgia, an increase of 14% over 2014. Georgia is one of the fastest growing summer meal programs in the country and for the second year in a row saw a more than 1 million meal increase in meals served.Desc

DescEducation: GFBA facilitates the sharing of best practices among and between member food bank Executive Directors and Key Staff in the areas of Agency Relations/Capacity Building, Food Procurement, Fund Raising and Marketing, and Advocacy. For the fifth year, GFBA convened an 8 state meeting of USDA Southeast Regional staff, State Agency staff, and food bank representatives from 8 southeastern states to share best practices on USDA nutrition programs and strengthen relationships between regulators and operators of these important programs. Using its statewide perspective, GFBA is able to educate key external stakeholders on hunger issues and hunger relief efforts statewide. GFBA provides a single point of contact for the public, the press, and state and federal nutrition programs/agencies wanting to learn more about hunger relief efforts in Georgia. Its website www.Georgifoodbankassociation.org is designed as a portal to educate the public about hunger in Georgia, the role of GFBA Food Banks and their network of partner agencies/pantries, and most importantly to help the public find the regional food banks serving their county through direct links to "Get Help or "Donate". Externally GFBA educated the public about hunger and the role of food banks through strategic partnerships with Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia Farm Bureau, Voices for Georgia's Children, Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, Georgia Municipal Association, Georgia Chamber of Commerce.Desc

ExplanationGFBA successfully lobbied the Georgia General Assembly to reinstate expired sales and use tax exemptions on food and food ingredients donated for hunger relief, enabling food banks to continue to receive more than 44 million pounds of food donations from their retail and restaurant partners each year without penalty of 8% "use tax" on the value of the donated food. GFBA successfully lobbied Georgia members of US Congress to support enhanced tax incentives for food donations which were made permanent in January 2016. GFBA continues lobby members of US Congress to streamline and add more options in the child nutrition programs for rural and urban areas (CNR Reauthorization); To fully fund TEFAP storage and distribution fees in the budget; To maintain the ability of states to partner with third party providers like food banks (third party MOE) who provide services to low income families who need emergency food assistance or are at risk of being homeless (TANF Reauthorization).ExplanationTxt
