MissionTHE MISSION OF THE NORTH CAROLINA CENTER FOR NONPROFITS IS TO ENRICH NORTH CAROLINA'S COMMUNITIES AND ECONOMY THROUGH A STRONG NONPROFIT SECTOR AND NONPROFIT VOICE. THE N.C. CENTER SERVES AS AN INFORMATION CENTER ON EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONAL PRACTICES, A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING NETWORK FOR BOARD AND STAFF MEMBERS OF 501(C)(3) NONPROFITS, AND AN ADVOCATE FOR THE NONPROFIT SECTOR AS A WHOLE. FOUNDED IN 1990, IT IS ONE OF THE LARGEST STATEWIDE ASSOCIATIONS OF NONPROFITS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.MissionDesc

DescSEMINARS and WORKSHOPS: The N.C. Center trained 4,683 community leaders this year through 86 workshops and webinars across the state about good practices in nonprofit governance, leadership, and management. This training provided opportunities for nonprofit board and staff members to exchange solutions to community problems, share the lessons they have learned, and offer support to each other in their challenging work. Sample topics include how nonprofits can create strategic alliances, utilize best practices, use data for decision making and impact, sucessfully manage executive transitions, develop current and future leaders for nonprofits, advocate for their causes, and comply with federal and state regulations for nonprofits. In some specific examples of training activities, we: A) Collaborated with the N.C. Association of CPAs to offer the 2016 Not-for-Profit Accounting Conference with 399 people in attendance. B) Educated 700 Nonprofit leaders about emerging issues and best practices at our 2015 Statewide conference, Full Tilt Nonprofits. This Two-Day event featured a keynote presentation by internationally recognized storytelling expert Andy Goodman, Fifteen Workshops on all aspects of nonprofit management and operations, and Deep-Dive intensives on data analytics, executive transitions, and laws that govern nonprofits. Peer-Sharing time, career coaching, and networking opportunities rounded out the agenda. C) Provided training and information on advocacy and working with legislators to 594 nonprofit staff, board, and volunteers through our 2016 Nonprofit Town Hall series. Our Town Halls helped nonprofits better understand how new legislation could affect their daily work, educated legislators on the ways that various proposals could affect their constituents and districts, and connected local nonprofits with their legislators.Desc

DescOutreach, Education of the Public, and Collaboration: The N.C. Center educated the public on the value of nonprofits to the people of North Carolina in a number of ways. For example, we: A) Distributed "Quick Facts: The Impact of North Carolina's Nonprofits." B) Distributed "Essential: Our State's Nonprofit Sector is a Vital Economic Engine," a comprehensive economic impact report on North Carolina's nonprofit sector. C) Helped top community leaders publish their op-ed articles and letters to the editor in order to help spread the word about the role of nonprofits in their geographic areas. D) Conducted interviews with the news media. E) Engaged 9,954 people about our mission through social media. F) Made educational presentations to dozens of groups of community and business leaders, lawmakers, and media representatives. G) Welcomed 139,848 unique visitors and more than 1,502,099 page views to our website. H) Continued to expand our website (www.ncnonprofits.org), which offers extensive resources on effective nonprofit practices, training opportunities, and nonprofit careers. I) Collaborated with hundreds of nonprofit, business, and government entities to achieve this educational goal. In November, the N.C. Center and nonprofits celebrated our state's 8th annual Nonprofit Awareness Month. We encouraged nonprofits across North Carolina to educate the public about how nonprofits make their local communities better places to live and work. We distributed a toolkit and a daily activities calendar to community leaders and the media. We promoted #GivingTuesday, a global initiative to encourage and promote giving and to provide an alternative to the consumer-oriented Black Friday. Local nonprofits built awareness by using social media, sharing with news media their stories about how they are making a difference in people's lives, eliciting and publicizing proclamations of Nonprofit Awareness Month by local elected officials, and holding tours of local nonprofit organizations so the public can see their work in action. We advocated for a positive policy environment to support nonprofits' work. We worked closely with the N.C. Center's grassroots network of 4,119 nonprofit board and staff leaders in all 100 counties that have asked to participate in this advocacy network. To multiply our impact, we collaborated with statewide, local, and national organizations that serve nonprofits. Some examples of specific results include: A) Kept the nonprofit sector united on contentious state tax policy issues. Through our work with our grassroots network and the Alliance for NC Nonprofits, our direct advocacy with legislators, and our media outreach, we suceeded in protecting nonprofit sales tax refunds and preserving NC's charitable deduction on state income taxes. B) Successfully advocated on state legislation and rules to help nonprofits save time and money. Examples include reducing unnecessary and redundant reporting requirements on state grants and contracts and clarifying rules for conversions of nonprofit corporations to limited liability companies. C) Tracked dozens of bills in the N.C. General Assembly that could affect nonprofits in a wide variety of ways. D) Kept nonprofit staff and board members across the state informed through weekly email updates, regular conference calls, and regional workshops. E) Helped nonprofits engage in nonpartisan voter registration, voter education, and get-out-the-vote activities through our partnership with Nonprofit VOTE. F) Connected nonprofits with elected officials in their communities at a series of nine nonprofit town halls held around the state.Desc

DescMember Services to Nonprofits: The N.C. Center for Nonprofits offered an array of services to increase nonprofits' knowledge and their capacity to make a positive difference for their communities and causes. For example, we helped nonprofits exchange solutions and work together for a better North Carolina by supporting a self-help network of 6,410 board and staff leaders and other volunteers in 1,500 nonprofits of all sizes and types that serve all 100 counties. In our most recent statewide survey, 74% of member nonprofits reported actual improvements they have made in their organizations through information or assistance provided by the N.C. Center. In addition, 40% have saved time, 38% have saved money, and 35% of board and staff members have grown personally or professionally. Members rated all of the Center's services with an average of 4.0 or higher on a 5-point scale (where 5 is excellent, 4 is good, 3 average, 2 fair, and 1 poor). In addition, 97% would recommend the Center to other nonprofits. Probably the best measure of the value of the Center's services to North Carolina's nonprofits is whether they renew their memberships in the Center. We achieved a 97.4% membership renewal rate this year, exceeding the 85% benchmark set by the Board of Directors as part of the Center's strategic plan and the national average retention rate of 80%.Desc

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES - FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4DDESCRIPTION: Educational Services And Technical Assistance Expenses: $176,370 Including Grants of $0 Revenue: $50,449 The North Carolina Center for Nonprofits provided educational materials, training, and technical assistance to board and staff leaders in nonprofits throughout the state. We educated nonprofits about effective organizational practices in nonprofit management, governance, and leadership. Examples of topics include communications, financial management, legal compliance, accountability, fundraising, evaluation, advocacy, technology, succession planning and executive transitions, and collaboration. In addition, we have added 88 more resources on good practices to the nearly 1,200 carefully-selected resources already offered on our website. On all 365 days of this year, nonprofits tapped this treasure trove by downloading sample organizational policies and substantive articles on specific challenges that they were facing with an average of 152 downloads of substantive resources per day. The Center produced cutting-edge resources, such as the quarterly Common Ground and the bi-weekly "Connect & Learn" electronic newsletters. We disseminated the Centers signature booklet, Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence: A Self-Help Tool for Organizational Effectiveness. This booklet lists specific benchmarks to help nonprofits identify areas for improvements as they strive for excellence. The Center publishes these resources to help ensure the integrity of the nonprofit sector and to promote stewardship by individual nonprofits and by the nonprofit sector as a whole. The Center arranged 197 pro bono consultations in specialty areas that are critical to nonprofits success. Without this program, many nonprofits would not have access to specialized experts. We have developed a volunteer network of 212 experienced attorneys, Certified Public Accountants, and professionals in human resources, marketing, succession planning, and coaching. We offered these programs through partnerships we have established with the N.C. Bar Association, N.C. Association of CPAs, Raleigh-Wake Human Resources Management Association, American Marketing Association, and the International Coach Federation. We also offered free on-site consultations with experts at the 2015 Conference for North Carolinas Nonprofit Sector. Description: Research Expenses: $36,708 including grants of $0 Revenue: $0 The N.C. Center continued to collaborate with state government and other nonprofits to solve problems that nonprofits were experiencing when they provide public services through government grants and contracts. We raised longstanding, systemic problems based on North Carolina information researched by the N.C. Center, the national Nonprofit Finance Fund, and The Urban Institute. Issues included unneeded and duplicative application and reporting requirements that added unnecessarily to nonprofits administrative burden, government not paying nonprofits the full cost of providing services, and government changing its expectations in the middle of the contract period. The Center also distributed "Essential: Our State's Nonprofit Sector is a Vital Economic Engine," a comprehensive economic impact report on North Carolina's nonprofit sector. The report examines the economic impact of nonprofits in North Carolina and the challenges facing the sector. It was developed using research from the N.C. Center, the N.C. Department of Commerce, the Nonprofit Finance Fund, and the National Center for Charitable Statistics at the Urban Institute. Description: Nonprofit Sector Resource Conservation Expenses: $28,755 including grants of $0 Revenue: $32,591 The N.C. Center offered 29 programs to help nonprofits conserve resources so they can maximize the value of their programs to their communities. Examples include options for reducing the costs of unemployment insurance and employee benefit programs, as well as discounts on other operating expenses such as conference calls, information technology services, credit card processing and merchant services, fundraising software, online gift acceptance, top journals, a guide to the N.C. legislature, and online surveys. We also disseminated tips on saving time and money.
PROCESS TO REVIEW FORM 990 - FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 11BForm 990 is sent in draft form to members of the Board of Directors for review and changes. Any substantive changes are sent back to the full Board for review. The final Form 990 is sent to the IRS.
COMPENSATION POLICY - FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 15BSalary ranges for all positions are developed based on studies of comparable positions. The Executive Committee of the organization's Board of Directors reviews and decides on these salary ranges. The full Board of Directors determines the salary of the President. The Board delegates the setting of salaries for all other staff, including staff who serve as officers, to the President within the limitations of the total organizational budget.
DISCLOSURE TO PUBLIC - FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION C, LINE 19The governing documents, Form 990 and conflict of interest policy are available to the public upon request. The financial statements in Form 990 are also available on guidestar.org and available in summary form in the organization's annual report on its own website.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST-FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 12CALL MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND STAFF REVIEW AND SIGN ANNUALLY THE ORGANIZATION'S CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY. IN THE CURRENT TAX YEAR, BOARD AND STAFF MEMBERS HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR LETTING THE BOARD CHAIR OR PRESIDENT KNOW OF ANY POTENTIAL CONFLICTS OF INTERESTS. IN SUBSEQUENT YEARS, THE PRESIDENT WILL REMIND BOARD AND STAFF MEMBERS, VIA QUARTERLY EMAILS SENT PRIOR TO EACH BOARD MEETING, TO DISCLOSE POTENTIAL CONFLICTS OF INTEREST.
