DescHealthChildren Now's health programs focus on ensuring that children have meaningful access to high-quality, affordable health care, including physical, mental, and oral health services, and other key services like home visiting, developmental screenings and early intervention that are vital for California's youngest children. Through our health efforts, we have achieved the following: worked with our partners to ensure expanded health coverage to more than 170,000 undocumented children; continued to raise awareness around the value of school-based health services in improving outcomes for children, including programs like the California Children's Dental Disease Prevention Program (CCDDPP) and the Early Mental Health Initiative (EMHI); led California based efforts in support of a two-year extension of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), engaged a range of diverse stakeholders in the effort to make numerous enhancements to the Medi-Cal Children's Health Advisory Panel, which is helping to improve how Medi-Cal works for children and their parents; continued our leadership efforts to promote developmental screenings and early interventions for California's infants and toddlers; led efforts to ensure no service disruption for the critically ill children receiving medical care under the California Children's Services program while stakeholders work to improve the program; built momentum behind expanding and enhancing home visiting programs in California and worked to protect federal funding for the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program; and through managing the Health Homes Network, have continued to promote the value of health homes, a family-centered model of health care delivery that provides comprehensive services in a coordinated and accessible manner.Desc

DescEducationChildren Now's education program aims to ensure every child has access to high-quality early learning opportunities, a rigorous TK-12 education, and quality afterschool and summer programs. Through research and analysis, policy development, education and outreach, communications, convenings and advocacy, we have achieved the following: made significant progress towards building a transparent and student focused accountability system that prioritizes student achievement and the closure of achievement gaps, and includes measures of chronic absence, college and career readiness and school climate; led outreach efforts to ensure successful rollout of the Common Core standards in California by leading a public education, communication and stakeholder engagement effort; continued to provide parents, community groups, district staff and others with information, tools, resources and trainings on California's new school finance reform regulations; united hundreds of stakeholders who helped secure funding for expanded quality preschool and childcare for low-income families; worked with policymakers and key stakeholders to promote adoption of an effective Next Generation Science Standards assessment approach and continued to promote STEM education in California; successfully worked with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing to improve program standards and expectations for teachers and administrators, including to provide training on school climate and effective behavior management; continued work to secure transparent and accessible data in the state's longitudinal student data system, as well as related to the state's new school finance reform regulations; led efforts to improve school climate and help curb the disproportionate rates of suspension and expulsion among at-risk populations; continued to play a primary policy and advocacy role in promoting a universal statewide kindergarten readiness tool in California; and promoted the effective integration of career pathways and expanded learning time by working to ensure college and career indicators are in the state's accountability system.Desc

DescResearch and Data CollectionChildren Now produces comprehensive reports, fact sheets and policy briefs on topics related to each of our program areas, and provides data support related to children's well-being to a wide range of state and local stakeholders and community members. We produce two marquee publications: 1) the California Report Card, which provides up-to-date data on the status of California's children, addresses recent policy developments, and delivers recommendations for improving children's well-being, and 2) the California County Scorecard of Children's Well Being, which provides policymakers, advocates and community leaders with a much-needed means of measuring and analyzing children's well-being at the county and state level over time, by race and ethnicity, and relative to other counties. This online advocacy and data tool includes easy-to-read graphics depicting counties' unique strengths and vulnerabilities in meeting children's needs. Both of these publications, as well as numerous data reports and briefs, are widely distributed to state and local policy makers, the media, service providers, civic organizations and the general public. Outreach efforts and briefings around these publications and other data reports, as well as the widespread media coverage generated by their release, motivate policymakers and key stakeholders to make children's concerns a top priority.Desc

DescChild WelfareChildren Now's child welfare program works to address the comprehensive health, education, and social service needs of children in the child welfare system. Through our efforts, we have achieved the following: tripled health coverage enrollment for former foster youth in California through CoveredTil26, a multi-faceted advocacy, outreach, and education campaign to make them aware that they now have an extension of health care coverage until the age of 26 under the Affordable Care Act, and to help them access it; supported foster caregivers by educating local and county level stakeholders about the Approved Relative Caregiver (ARC) program, allowing foster children placed with relatives to receive state foster care funding equal to those placed with non-relatives, with a focus on bringing the full spectrum of supports and services to older foster youth and probation youth so they are able to thrive in a family setting; helped ensure that foster youth are now identified through California's student data system, so that school districts can ensure that the new school funding model is implemented in a way that benefits foster youth students as intended; set the groundwork needed to help ensure California's justice system is trauma-responsive and grounded in adolescent development; helped secure additional funding for the Foster Youth Services (FYS) program to allow it to begin serving all foster youth; and strengthened the legal rights of foster youth by securing funding to lower the caseloads of foster youth attorneys to ensure that all foster youth receive effective legal representation.Desc
