DescELEPHANTS: IFAW is working to ensure elephants live free in secure and viable habitats, and to eliminate threats to elephants from the ivory trade. To help reduce habitat loss and human threats to elephants IFAW is engaging local communities in an attempt to reduce poaching and human-wildlife conflict, providing training and equipment to wildlife rangers, and establishing migration corridors for elephants. While working locally in east, south, west and central Africa, as well as Asia, we also mobilize our supporters worldwide to demand politicians stop the ivory trade and support elephant protection efforts. / The alliance of Wildlife Trust of India and IFAW, Elephant Family, IUCN Netherlands and the World Land Trust launched the Asian Elephant Alliance with the goal of raising £20 million to fund 100 new elephant corridors in India by 2025. Later, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the IFAW-Wildlife Trust of India Wildlife Rescue Centre in Kaziranga as part of a week's tour in India, bottle feeding and playing with the orphan rhinos in our care. The trip garnered worldwide media coverage. / IFAW renewed the lease with the land owners of the Kitenden Corridor Conservation Area (KCCA), a 26,000-acre piece of land. The lease prohibits development and allows elephants to migrate between Mount Kilimanjaro and Amboseli National Park. IFAW and African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) have leased land there for two years.Desc

DescWILDLIFE TRADE: Illegal wildlife trade is a major global business that threatens many species with extinction and causes the suffering and death of many individual animals. IFAW is working with governments, national and international law enforcement agencies, including INTERPOL, customs officers, and rangers on the ground to protect wildlife from poaching and illegal trade. We are also experts in Internet-based wildlife trade, and conduct consumer awareness campaigns to discourage people from buying illegal wildlife products. / IFAW is well positioned to bring together technical expertise, government contacts, and local community engagement in new ways to stop the killing of animals for wildlife trade. Working closely with national, regional and international partners, we strive to increase successful interdiction of crime as close to the point of origin as possible, stopping shipments in transit across borders before they arrive in consumer countries. In consumer countries we must not only seek to strengthen legislation and law enforcement, but also to change societal attitudes and behaviors. / A year after IFAW launched tenBoma, which helps law enforcement hunt down the highly networked alliance of elephant poachers in Africa, the person who launched the effort-Prof. Judi W. Wakhungu, PhD., Cabinet Secretary of the Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Government of Kenya-addressed a US Congressional forum about the global security implications of wildlife crime and how tenBoma will be a tool in preventing the scourge of death wildlife crime leaves in its wake. / IFAW supported trainings of authorities to fight poaching and trafficking in Zambia, Egypt, Uganda, and Malawi, as well as trainings at tiger reserves in India. / After more than three years of IFAW campaigning, the European Commission and Dutch Presidency of the European Union launched an intergovernmental European Wildlife Trafficking Action Plan. / IFAW has always been a supporter of all ivory destruction events. IFAW was proud to support the government of Kenya and Kenya Wildlife Service on the burning of 105 tonnes of elephant ivory. In the days before the first-ever Giants Club Summit gathering African nation leaders to discuss the elephant crisis, IFAW convened a summit with the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association and the Conservation Alliance of Kenya that discussed the urgent need for stronger community action and drew up a 'social contract' to protect elephants. The results of our work in ivory trade have paid off this past year, with the Obama Administration finalizing new legal protections for African elephants and Chinese President Xi Jinping's announcement to protect elephants from ivory trade by enacting strong domestic trade controls. Our work in China building awareness among and good will within the government has paid off in the prospective ban. In the past year thanks to our KOL campaign "Say No to Ivory," which has benefitted from millions dollars' worth of donated advertising space, China Outdoor Data Corporation (CODC), a company in Beijing focusing on analyzing market trends of the advertising industry and brand awareness, named IFAW a top 20 brand in China in 2015 with outdoor advertisements. / The KOL outreach that we started in FY2015 culminated in Central Television anchor Yue Zhang leading a group of media executives and other Chinese wildlife ambassadors to Kenya in an IFAW initiative aiming to mobilize Chinese communities in Africa to reject wildlife crime.Desc

DescANIMAL RESCUE: In addition to responding to animals in crisis as emergencies occur around the world, IFAW maintains the following ongoing regional programs, which rescue, rehabilitate or provide sanctuary for a variety of small and large threatened species: Wildlife Rescue Centres in India, Bear Rescue Centre and Tiger Center in Russia, Raptor Rescue Centre in Beijing, China, Marine Mammal Rescue and Research, Cape Cod, United States, Penguin rescue in South Africa, saving primates in Africa and Asia and protecting big cats in captivity, United States. IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research team has provided marine mammal stranding response to Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts since December 1998. In FY2016 the team passed the 4,000 stranded animal responses mark in its record books. Using our copious amounts of data from stranding response, we published an academic article that proved that when single stranded dolphins are deemed healthy, they can be released both singularly and as a group. As our team is hailed as an international expert on stranding response and disentanglement, we hosted the Greater Atlantic Regional Stranding Conference in the US and led a team of UK rescuers on a disentanglement operation never previously carried out in the waters surrounding Iceland. Another standout rescue was one by the Campobello Whale Rescue team, an organization in Canada supported by IFAW, which successfully disentangled a distressed whale in the Bay of Fundy. Our disaster response team either responded in person or supported a network partner to a number of disasters in FY16. After a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador, our local partner Darwin Animal Doctors (DAD) helped 2,000 people and animals with emergency medical care, food and shelter, and conducted a massive vaccination campaign to prevent disease outbreaks throughout the affected regions. / IFAW and members of the National Animal Rescue and Sheltering Coalition (NARSC) assisted with emergency sheltering and water rescues for animals affected by severe flooding in Georgetown County, South Carolina. When several rooms in the Ukrainian shelter IFAW supports were destroyed by fire, IFAW made an emergency grant to replace medical supplies and food and help to repair fencing to keep the animals contained while walls were rebuilt. / After months of planning, 20 dogs whose lives were at risk due to violence in Syria were brought to Lebanon, flown to New York and jettisoned to partner shelters in Delaware and Pennsylvania, where almost all were immediately adopted to new families. Our disaster response team is considered an international leader in our field. For eight days leading up to the Hurricane Katrina's 10-year anniversary, IFAW gathered partners to instruct advanced life-saving techniques to scores of US local community responders-some as far away as Chile and India-to be better prepared for the next disastrous storm. / Orphaned elephants were rescued and rehabbed at our projects in Zambia and India. At the Kafue Release Facility at the Zambia Elephant Orphanage Project, we successfully satellite collared five of the orphaned elephants in the release herd, which are gradually reintegrating to the wild. Persistent monitoring revealed to the world that rehabilitated tigress Zolushka gave birth to cubs in the remote Russian Far East, proving that she has fully adapted to a life in the wild and is able to successfully hunt, breed and now raise two individuals that will prove crucial to the future of the Amur tiger species. Another orphaned female tiger cub, was found in the Russian Far East and admitted to the Center for Rehabilitation and Reintroduction of Tigers and Other Rare Animals near Vladivostok. Two rhinos, Purabi and Dwimalu, having undergone acclimatization at an enclosure set up by WTI-IFAW and the Assam Forest Department, were released to the wild in Manas National Park, bringing the total count of rhinos released to 10. Since its establishment in 2001, IFAW's Beijing Raptor Rescue Center (BRRC), located on the campus of Beijing Normal University, has rescued 4,229 birds of prey from more than 30 species, including hawks, eagles, owls and vultures. More than 55 percent of the birds are released back into the wild after rehabilitation.Desc

$1,399,305$313,352$0COMPANION ANIMALS: To ensure its animals are cared for in the short- and long-term, community members must tackle the challenge together. In order to help the most animals and support the most communities, IFAW's Humane Community Development initiative utilizes a set of participatory tools to better understand a community's problems and its unique population of dogs and cats. We bring community members together in participatory style workshops to help them understand the root causes of their concerns, and how to create management plans that addresses the specific needs of dogs, cats and people in their community. / IFAW approaches local communities respectfully and works with them to define their needs, goals, and barriers to providing safe, humane and sustainable animal management. With a holistic combination of community engagement, hands-on care, compassionate education, humane planning and population management, we are making the world a better place for dogs and cats one community at a time. As the result of a Humane Community Development program that we executed in Jajce, Bosnia, we shut the dilapidated municipal shelter there and transported the 65 resident dogs to new, loving homes in Germany with the help of our partner organization Streunerglück over the course of a few months in late 2015. / Work began to build a new facility for Coco's Animal Welfare in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Coco's started as a small cat rescue shelter and eventually grew into a small free and low cost spay and neuter clinic that also provides veterinary care to unowned animals. Hundreds of cats, dogs were treated in the first month at the new clinic. We also provided free veterinary advice and aid in neighborhoods with urgent need for such services, providing us the opportunity to go where the people are rather than them coming to us. / After more than two years struggling to serve Soweto's communities from divided locations, IFAW partner Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) moved back to its original location in Durban Deep with running water and solar-powered electricity. Acting on information provided by community members referred to them by CLAW, law enforcement arrested five major dog-fighting ring figures and confiscated eight dogs, some with appalling injuries. / In IFAW's last Northern Dogs veterinary clinic of the year, we spent three days, with 40 hours of surgery, providing spay/neuter and other vet services to more than 200 dogs and puppies and cats. The new IFAW van makes easy work of carrying equipment, donated dog food and dog houses through 2400 km of driving.
$1,126,501$81,411$0ANIMAL ACTION EDUCATION PROGRAM: As a long-standing global project with shared goals and outcomes across all of the 15+ countries where it is implemented by IFAW regional staff, Animal Action Education (AAE) teams focus on disseminating, promoting and engaging educators and students ages 5-14 with the free AAE library of animal welfare and conservation teaching resources, which is available in more than a dozen languages and dialects. / The AAE library is made available to educators via the IFAW website, hard copy distribution, and collaboration with a wide variety of educational partners and portals worldwide, from the educational marketing division of Dun and Bradstreet in the United States, to European Schoolnet, an initiative of more than 20 Ministries of Education. In total, across all regions and portals, the number of educator engagements suggests that AAE reached some 4.9 million students worldwide in FY16. / Undertaken with partner GRI in support of the Zambia Elephant Orphanage project (EOP - Animal Rescue program), our education program aims to reduce poaching in the vicinity of the EOP release area in Kafue National Park through development of a community-based reporting system supported by a highly-targeted and strategic education and communications campaign that will enable and motivate community participation. It is notable as a highly integrated multi-programmatic project and also the first pilot project for demonstrating IFAW's new social and behavior change communications approaches. / In collaboration with local partner HELP Malawi, we've incorporated feedback from piloting the curricula of an education project in Malawi from June to October 2015, reflecting changes to the HELP instructional approach and integration with the conservation gardening focus of the IFAW elephants program Chikolongo Livelihoods Project in the region. / In partnership with UNDP and local community volunteers, including police officers, AAE curricula reached about 1700 primary school students in 12 rural and 1 urban school in Gradacac, one of three Bosnian communities participating in the IFAW Companion Animals program's Human Community Development initiative.
$1,005,366$177,391$0WHALES: Whales face more threats today than ever before and through campaigning, research and political outreach IFAW's Whale Programme is leading the fight to save whales from the many threats that endanger their survival. Our whales work is divided into five key areas: IFAW campaigns for the protection of whales using all possible international conventions and legal strategies to end commercial whaling in Japan, Norway and Iceland. IFAW is leading a number of projects that promote responsible whale watching and help to ensure the whale watching industry is managed sustainably. IFAW works to designate marine sanctuaries areas in important whale feeding, breeding, and migratory areas to help protect whales from threats to their survival. IFAW works to reduce threats to whales from noise pollution, entanglements and ship strikes. IFAW supports non-invasive marine research to carry out population assessments, perfect surveying techniques and develop technologies to help save whale species from the many threats they face today. / With IFAW working with Icelandic leaders promoting responsible whale watching and creative development of the eco-tourism industry over the years, it was welcome news that Kristjan Loftsson, the controversial Icelandic fisheries magnate, announced he wouldn't hunt endangered fin whales in the North Atlantic this year. / Sonic Sea premiered on Discovery Channel and was broadcast across their network in the Asia/Pacific, Central/Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa regions and parts of Northern Europe. The film illustrates the painful impact of increasing ocean noise on marine mammals, as well as the simple steps we can take to remove this danger. IFAW had many victories for whales in Australia and New Zealand, including campaigns to encourage the governments to come up with recovery plans, stave off oil and gas exploration and slow down ships.
