DescAcute Care Inpatient - 10,517 acute admissions in 2016 with 45,196 Patient Days. Swedish Edmonds (formerly Stevens Hospital) has served Edmonds and surrounding communities for the last 50 years. Together with the larger Swedish and Providence Systems, we are creating an innovative, regional health-care delivery network that will provide more local services, while giving residents greater access to the latest medical treatments and the comprehensive services of the Swedish and Providence systems. Our campus includes 217 licensed beds, more than 450 medical staff physicians, more than 1,400 staff and a full scope of medical and surgical services, including Level IV Trauma emergency medicine, diagnostic, treatment and support services. In addition to over $10M in community benefit provided through charity care and other community services, through our innovative partnership with Verdant (Snohomish County Public Hospital District #2) we provide more than $7M annually in funds that can be directly contributed to meeting the health needs of the community.Outpatient - Swedish Edmonds provided 134,386 outpatient visits and 47,550 Emergency Room visits in 2016. Outpatient services include emergency visits, specialty care, and diagnostic services. Examples are services for wound care, endocrinology, pain treatment, sleep medicine, behavioral health, breast imaging, and other medical imaging. Patients receiving outpatient service are eligible for the same charity care as inpatients and charity care dollars are included in numbers listed in 4A above. In addition, our hospital payor mix is approximately 60% Medicare and Medicaid- we often hear that patients with those insurance types have trouble finding providers who will care for them.Surgical services: In 2016 Swedish Edmonds provided more than 11,300 surgeries. Medically necessary surgeries are often provided at low or reduced cost for patients meeting our financial assistance criteria.Desc

Swedish EdmondsPart V, Section B, Line 11: Swedish Edmonds has identified the following health issues that require immediate community attention and action:-Heart Disease-Cancer-Youth and Adult Obesity-Suicide (Adults and Youth)Youth physical abuse is not one of Swedish Edmonds' priority health issues as there are other agencies giving this issue attention and resources.Cancer (168.5 per 100,000) and heart disease (154.6 per 100,000) are two leading causes of death in Snohomish County. However, in the United States, heart disease deaths outnumbered those due to cancer, while in Snohomish County there were more deaths due to cancer. Chronic diseases are the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in Snohomish County, Washington, and the United States. These diseases are responsible for 70% of deaths in the United States, and cause one in 10 Americans to be limited in their activities. Hospital's response to heart disease:-Emergency Cardiac Care program with City of Lynnwood-Go Red Connect & BetterU Challenge programs with American Heart Association-Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute offers leading-edge diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation for a growing range of adult and pediatric cardiovascular diseases and conditions-Heart health fairs in local community with Swedish/Edmonds heart experts-Heart-healthy classes at Swedish/Edmonds-Heart-healthy recipes and cooking demonstrations-Cardiac rehabilitation-Pulmonary rehabilitation-Swedish website heart disease risk test-Provided medical staff at Nick of Time, a free youth heart-screening event-Wellness Works employee health programHospital's response to cancer:-Relay for Life with American Cancer Society-Cancer support groups at Swedish/Edmonds-Cancer education classes at Swedish/Edmonds-Cancer conference series for Swedish staff-Cancer gala fund raiser with ACS-Swedish website cancer risk test-Tumor Board and Breast Cancer Conferences are held weekly at Swedish/Edmonds-Cancer Registry Report optimizes cancer programs-American Cancer Society Resource Center on campus-Free wigs/fittings-I Can Cope classes-After Breast Cancer education classes-Reach to recovery program-Look Good Feel Better classes-Wellness Works employee health programObesity contributes to numerous and varied comorbid conditions. Complications can occur in many organ systems, ranging from cardiovascular to respiratory to orthopedic and even ophthalmologic. Overweight and obesity are known risk factors for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and other breathing problems, and some cancers (uterine, breast, colorectal, kidney, and gallbladder). In addition, obesity is associated with pregnancy complications, high blood cholesterol, menstrual irregularities, hirsutism (excessive hair growth), stress incontinence, psychological disorders, and increased surgical risk. Social discrimination against obese persons has a strong negative effect on their quality of life.Hospital's response to obesity:-Nutrition and exercise classes at Swedish/Edmonds-Healthy Habits after-school program with Boys and Girls Club-Healthier Choices events at Edmonds School District school with Spanish interpreters-6 Weeks to a Healthier You: biometric lab tests before and after series, event booth, presenters and marketing support-Get Movin' event-Producer of Healthy eating videos produced by Swedish/Edmonds-Swedish website obesity risk test-Heart-healthy classes at Swedish/Edmonds-Heart-healthy recipes and cooking demonstrations-Cardiac rehabilitation-Pulmonary rehabilitation-Wellness Works employee health programInjury has been identified as the third leading cause of death in Snohomish County and the leading cause of death in persons age 1-44. Two-thirds of injuries in 2010 were unintentional and one-third intentional, mostly suicide.Hospitalizations for mental health issues increased during the recession in 2009 and 2010. One-third of such admissions were for mood disorders such as depression, and 43% were substance related (18% alcohol, 25% other substances). Females were more likely to be admitted than males. Admission rates were highest in the 15-24 year-old age group, and declined in older age groups. Approximately 2.3% of Snohomish County adults reported having signs of serious mental illness. Those who are in poverty, unemployed, or unable to work had much higher rates of mental illness than others. People with serious mental illness were more likely than others to be disabled, obese, dissatisfied with life, or smoke.Nearly 30% of Snohomish County students reported being depressed. Depressed youth had poorer academic performances than others and were more likely to be involved in violence. They were also more likely to smoke, drink, and use illegal drugs.Approximately 5% of Snohomish County adults report having inadequate emotional support. People with inadequate emotional support were more likely than others to smoke, be disabled, and be dissatisfied with life.Suicide was the ninth-leading cause of death in Snohomish County and was responsible for 29% of injury deaths. Suicide rates increased dramatically with the economic downturn in 2009. Females are more likely to attempt suicide, but males are more likely to succeed due to their tendency to use firearms (females try poison more often). Suicide rates increase with age, with males over 65 having the highest rate (38.0 per 100,000). The county's suicide rate (14.6 per 100,000) was much higher than the Healthy People 2020 goal of 10.2 suicides per 100,000.Hospital's response to suicide:-Snohomish County Suicide Prevention Lifeline and CRISIS Line-National Suicide Prevention Lifeline-NAMI National Information HelpLine-Veterans' Crisis Line-Volunteers of America/Crisis Response Services-Survivors of Suicide Support Group hosted by Swedish/Edmonds-International Survivors of Suicide Day hosted by Swedish/Edmonds-Partial hospitalization mental health program at Swedish/Edmonds-Voluntary and involuntary mental health services at hospital-Primary care physicians treat mental health patients too-Pain management

Part I, Line 3c:The sliding fee scale will be used to determine the amount to be written off as charity care for guarantors with income between 301% and 400% of the current federal poverty level after all funding possibilities available to the guarantor have been exhausted or denied and personal financial resources and assets have been reviewed for possible funding to pay for billing charges.
Part I, Line 6a:In addition to having Community Benefit information included in the consolidated Swedish Health Services Community Benefit Report, this information is also included in the Providence Health & Services Community Benefit Report.
Part I, Line 7:Costs for table 7 are from actual expenses incurred.
Part I, Line 7, Column (f):The Bad Debt expense included on Form 990, Part IX, Line 25, Column (A), but subtracted for purposes of calculating the percentage in this column is $ 9,213,114.
Part II, Community Building Activities:COMMUNITY BUILDING ACTIVITIES:-Educating the community regarding healthy living by representing Swedish Edmonds on the Edmonds School District Creating Community Connections Committee. -CPR and First aid education. -Health education to schools.-Ask the Dr and ASK the RN outreach.-Equity of Care committee.
Part III, Line 2:Bad debt expense represents the amount of gross charges for patients who do not have insurance and which Swedish Edmonds was unable to qualify for assistance under either government programs or our internal charity care policy.
Part III, Line 4:The Health System provides for an allowance against patient accounts receivable for amounts that could become uncollectible. The Health System estimates this allowance based on the aging of accounts receivable, historical collection experience by payor, and other relevant factors. There are various factors that can impact the collection trends, such as changes in the economy, which in turn have an impact on unemployment rates and the number of uninsured and underinsured patients, the increased burden of copayments to be made by patients with insurance coverage and business practices related to collection efforts. These factors continuously change and can have an impact on collection trends and the estimation process used by the Health System. The Health System records a provision for bad debts in the period of services on the basis of past experience, which has historically indicated that many patients are unresponsive or are otherwise unwilling to pay the portion of their bill for which they are financially responsible.
Part III, Line 8:It is Swedish's policy to exclude any Medicare shortfall from Community Benefit information. The amount reported on Part III, Section B, Line 6, was determined by applying the Cost-to-Charge Ratio to the Medicare revenue.
Part III, Line 9b:Billing and Collection PracticesThe debt collection policy applies to self-pay individuals who have been evaluated and determined not to be eligible for financial assistance.Swedish has written policies about when and under whose authority patient debt is advanced for collection, and uses its best efforts to ensure that patient accounts are processed fairly and consistently.Swedish ensures that practices to be used by their outside (non-hospital) collection agencies conform to the standards set forth in this policy, and obtains written commitments from such agencies that they will adhere to those standards. Swedish also conducts an assessment of each collection agency's adherence to the policy. Such assessments are conducted at least annually. At time of billing, we provide to all low-income uninsured patients the same information concerning services and charges provided to all other patients who receive care at the hospital. When sending a bill to a patient, Swedish includes a) a statement that indicates that if the patient meets certain income requirements the patient may be eligible for a government-sponsored program or for financial assistance from the hospital; and b) a statement that provides the patient with the name and telephone number of a hospital employee or office from whom or which the patient may obtain information about Swedish's financial assistance policies for patients and how to apply for such assistance.Any patient seeking financial assistance from Swedish (or the patient's legal representative) provides the individual facility with information concerning health benefits coverage, financial status (i.e. income, assets) and any other information that is necessary for the hospital to make a determination regarding the patient's status relative to Providence's financial assistance policy, discounted payment policy, or eligibility for government-sponsored programs. For patients who have an application pending determination for either government-sponsored coverage or for the hospitals own financial assistance program, Providence will not knowingly send that patient's bill to a collection agency.Eligibility for financial assistance will be determined as closely as possible to the date of service.
Part VI, Line 2:In September 2015 representatives from Edmonds began planning for the 2016 community health needs assessment. There is a significant community desire for a campus-specific community health needs assessment. Public data and reports were reviewed for the population served by Swedish Edmonds, largely north King and south Snohomish Counties.Data was reviewed from national, state, county and local sources including Snohomish Health District Report Card, Public Health Advisory Council, Verdant Health Commission, Washington State Snohomish County Profile, Economic Alliance of Snohomish County, Centers for Disease Control, The Advisory Board and internal market analysis.Supplemental sources of information was also assessed, including meetings with community partners, feedback gathered from listening sessions at community events, patient educational seminars, conferences with Swedish Edmonds service lines and input from Swedish Edmonds leadership.Swedish Edmonds partnered with Snohomish Health District and The Publix Health Advisory Council and adopted their methodology for determining the most important health indicators.Using these criteria, the members of the Council chose six health issues that need community attention and action, the first three needing immediate action: Youth Physical Abuse Youth and Adult Obesity Suicide (Adults and Youth) Youth Dental Decay Access to a Primary Care Provider No Prenatal Care During the First TrimesterData was analyzed from a variety of sources, and 27 indicators with the worst risk scores were then evaluated in terms of their size, seriousness, the existence of evidence-based practices and community interventions, and whether there are community values attached to the issue.
Part VI, Line 3:COMMUNICATION TO THE PUBLIC:Swedish Hospitals are committed to the provision of healthcare services to all persons in need of medical attention regardless of their ability to pay.Employees are responsible for processing applications in a respectful and courteous manner. Processing should in no way discourage patients from receiving healthcare or result in the delayed provision of essential healthcare services. Charity care/financial assistance are available to any eligible patient without regard to race, color, sex, religion, age or national origin. All interactions with patients must respect the inherent worth of all persons and their individual dignity.Public Notices:Our Financial Assistance (Charity Care) Policy is made available via wall posters that are located in registration areas and emergency departments. Letter size posters are also available in departments and health resource centers.Brochures are available for dissemination or upon request and are available in several languages including, but not limited to, English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean. Brochures, applications and the sliding scale are available to any person requesting the information whether in person, by mail or by telephone.Timing of Application:Patients may apply for charity care prior to service, at the time of service or at any point in the billing process up to the resolution of the account.Identification of Charity Care Candidates:Every effort is made to identify patients who would benefit from charity care at the earliest point possible. Care for a patient's well-being is as important as care for their medical needs. It is our goal to diminish a patient's worry over healthcare bills. Employees must be alert to indications that the patient or family has concerns about their ability to pay healthcare bills, even if the patient does not specifically ask about charity care or financial assistance.General Application Process:Once a patient is identified as a charity care candidate, the patient will be interviewed. Interpreters will be offered and arranged as appropriate.
Part VI, Line 4:Geographically, Swedish Edmonds is located in Snohomish County, situated between Northern Puget Sound to the west and the crest line of the North Cascade Range to the east. It shares its northern border with rural Skagit County and borders King County to the south.Due to its proximity to and shared labor market with King County, Snohomish County is incorporated into the Seattle - Bellevue - Everett Metropolitan Statistical Area, as designated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The geographical distribution of population, economic activity and land use in Snohomish County is diverse, with a mix of rural and urban zones. For the most part, population centers in the county are oriented south in proximity to the border with King County and west along Interstate 5. By contrast, north and east Snohomish County are characterized by smaller cities, farms and reservations.Snohomish County total population was approximately 713,335 people in 2010 with Edmonds ranked the 3rd most populous city in Snohomish County and the 26th most populous city in Washington State. Part VI, Line 5:PROMOTION OF COMMUNITY HEALTH:Swedish Edmonds integrates community benefits into its ongoing planning processes, budgeting and reporting. The Hospital uses its resources at both the local and Swedish Health System-wide levels to benefit citizens in need and to promote healing and health in its communities. Senior management ensures that resources are allocated to assess, develop and implement community benefit programs and initiatives that respond to the unmet health priorities. The Hospital participates in the assurance of community health assets and needs with special attention to geographical areas and populations with disproportionate unmet health-related needs. The Hospital budget includes financial resources to assess, plan, develop, implement, manage and report on community benefit initiatives. The Hospital's community benefit programs are developed in response to health issues identified in various assessments of the service area and disease status identified, focused on disproportionate unmet health-related needs, with emphasis on prevention and access to continuing care. The Hospital determines measurable goals, including the number of people reached, disproportionate populations visited, and education provided and gained access to care.
Part VI, Line 6:Effective July 1, 2016, Providence Health & Services and St. Joseph Health came together to serve more people in a partnership that joins two remarkable organizations with rich heritages. We are now connected by a new parent organization, Providence St. Joseph Health. Together, over 100,000 of our caregivers (employees) now serve in 50 hospitals, over 800 clinics and a comprehensive range of health and social services across Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Washington. All hospitals and other ministries will maintain their current names and identities. This parent structure allows our family of diverse organizations to work together to meet the needs of our communities both today and into the future.

Part I, Line 1aThe reporting organization did not provide any of the benefits listed in Part I, Line 1a. However, as part of Swedish's philosophy of transparency, the narrative that follows relates to the compensation and benefits provided by the related organization. Swedish Edmonds executives adhere to the Providence Expense Reimbursement Procedures which include the following policies: Travel or Charter Travel or Travel of Companions Air travel is reimbursable and should be at the least expensive airfare; which permits departures and arrivals at reasonable times and reasonable distance traveled. Employees are encouraged to plan in advance to get available discounts. Airline frequent flyer upgrades will never be reimbursed. First class full fare tickets and charter must be approved by a senior level supervisor. Companion travel will only be reimbursed by the organization for travel related to relocation, and should not exceed two relocation-related visits, unless approved by by the Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer (EVP, CAO) of Providence St. Joseph Health. Spouse or Companion Travel. Travel expenses incurred by a Swedish employee's spouse or companion will not be reimbursed by Swedish unless the spouse or companion is required to, or invited to attend a System-sponsored meeting. These expenses may be considered a taxable benefit by the IRS and if so, will be included on the employee's W- 2. During 2016, there were 24 First Class tickets utilized by Officers, Directors or Key Employees listed on Form 990, Part VII. Tax Indemnifications or Gross-Up Payments - Relocation Swedish follows the federal and state taxation laws related to relocation expenses paid to the employee or to a third party on the employee's behalf. They are considered income and are therefore subject to payroll taxes. Based on the way Swedish has chosen to pay the relocation expenses, Swedish reports reimbursements and payments to vendors as income and these expense payments are reflected on the executive's Form W-2. Swedish will gross-up the relocation benefits to offset the personal tax burden to the employee for IRS allowable expenses. During 2016, there were 4 Key Employees receiving gross-up payments. The amounts reported for these gross-up payments are included on Schedule J, Part II, Column B (iii) - Other Reportable Compensation on the Form 990. Tax Indemnifications or Gross-Up Payments - Financial/Retirement Planning Swedish follows the federal and state taxation laws related to other expenses paid to the employee or to a third party on the employee's behalf. They are considered income and are therefore subject to payroll taxes. Based on the way Swedish has chosen to pay these other expenses, Swedish reports reimbursements and payments to vendors as income and these expense payments are reflected on the executive's Form W-2. Swedish will gross-up the financial/retirement planning benefits, during 2016 only, to offset the personal tax burden to the employee for IRS allowable expenses. During 2016, there were 4 Officers, 11 Key Employees and 1 Former Key Employee receiving this type of gross-up payment. The amounts reported for these gross-up payments are included on Schedule J, Part II, Column B (iii) - Other Reportable Compensation on the Form 990. Housing Allowance or Residence for Personal Use Swedish provides housing allowances for purposes of relocation assistance only. Swedish may pay temporary living expenses for the employee up to a maximum of 90 calendar days. Covered expenses are rent (excluding "rent" which may be paid in order to occupy a new permanent residence until the title clears) and utilities, including heat, electricity, gas, water, local internet and local telephone and garbage services. The EVP, CAO PSJH may approve temporary housing assistance for up to six months when family relocation is delayed to accommodate the school year or equivalent circumstances. Only in extenuating circumstances is housing extended beyond this six month period. During 2016, there were 4 Key Employees receiving relocation/housing program payments. The amounts reported for these relocation/housing payments are included on Schedule J, Part II, Column B (iii) - Other Reportable Compensation on the Form 990.

FORM 990, SCHEDULE J, PART II - EXECUTIVE INCENTIVE PROGRAMSwedish executives participate in the Providence Executive Incentive Program which provides a lump sum award annually as a percent of the executive's base pay. Percent opportunities are aligned with our total compensation philosophy as outlined in Part VI, Section B, Line 15 (Process for determining compensation of top management, officers & key employees). The performance award is based on the level of accomplishment of annual system and functional (or regional) objectives. Form 990, Part III, line 3The Pavilion Pharmacy (retail and homecare pharmacy) closed at the end of 2016. This was a difficult decision to make as the pharmacy had served the community for many years. However, we determined that we were not able to run it in a competitive manner, and there are many other retail and homecare pharmacies in the area, so patients would be well taken care of.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6Western HealthConnect is the sole member of Swedish Edmonds.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7bThe following powers are reserved to and exercised exclusively by the Member: A) To amend or repeal the Articles of Incorporation or Bylaws. B) To approve the acquisition of assets, the incurrence of indebtedness or the lease, sale, transfer, assignment or encumbering of assets. C) To approve the dissolution, liquidation, consolidation or merger with another corporation or entity. D) To approve the annual operating and capital budgets of the Corporation on a consolidated region-wide basis and recommend approval of the Corporation's budget. E) To appoint certified public accountants after receiving the recommendation of the Board of Directors, and to receive the annual audit report from such accountants.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11bThe Form 990 is prepared internally by experienced Providence Health & Services staff and reviewed by the internal PH&S Director of Taxes and external tax advisors. The Board of Directors reviewed the Form 990 prior to filing with the IRS.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cBased on the affiliation with Providence Health & Services, the following applies to the Conflict of Interest: Providence Health & Services maintains a conflict of interest policy that applies to board members and management of all Providence-related organizations. The purpose of the policy is to guide and direct those serving the Providence Health & Services' corporations and other legal entities so they can (1) fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities and exercise stewardship in ways that promote and protect the best interests of Providence and, (2) avoid situations that create a conflict, or the appearance of a conflict, between the interests of an individual associated with Providence and Providence. On an annual basis, each board member and management level employee must complete and submit an updated conflict of interest statement. Conflict of interest disclosures are reviewed by the System Integrity Department working in conjunction with the Department of Legal Affairs. If it is determined that an actual conflict exists, appropriate follow-up action is taken with the individual to rectify the conflict.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15It is Swedish's intention to make financial information accessible and transparent. Although the filing of Form 990 provides insight into how Swedish achieves its Mission, delivers its programs and stewards its finances, deciphering the information directly from Form 990 can be challenging. The following paragraphs provide further information about the process we use to determine compensation for top management, officers and key employees. Providence has a single fiduciary Board, which also covers Swedish officers and key employees, with responsibility for financial oversight associated with fulfillment of the Providence Mission, developing system policies, protecting the assets entrusted to the organization and overseeing the strategic and operational affairs of Providence's legal entities. Providence and Swedish also maintain a network of community ministry boards with responsibility for quality of care oversight, community relations, advocacy and community needs assessments. Providence has a consistent compensation philosophy for all of its officers, including our senior Swedish executives. Salaries for senior executives are reviewed by the Providence St. Joseph Health Committee and approved by the full Board of Directors, none of whom is a Providence or Swedish employee. The Board retains an independent consultant each year to review salaries of those in the most significant leadership roles in the organization. Part of the consultant's role is to review an extensive array of compensation surveys of large, not-for-profit health care systems in the United States. Providence is one of the larger health systems in the country, and as such, the Board benchmarks executive compensation against other large, not-for-profit health systems whose revenue is similar to that of Providence. Additionally, Providence's labor market continues to spread across health care and into general industry. Because of this, Providence also takes into consideration general industry for-profit market data, where applicable. Base salaries for Providence & Swedish executives are generally targeted to the median level of the market, as identified by the independent consultant and reviewed with the Executive Compensation Committee. Performance incentives allow executives to earn additional compensation if they achieve specific organizational goals for furthering Providence operating commitments and strategic objectives. The Board of Directors conducts a thorough process to ensure performance incentives are aligned with appropriate market practices. The Board's process for executive compensation fully complies with IRS standards and mirrors best practices.

FORM 990, PART I, LINE 6 - VOLUNTEERSThe volunteers at Swedish Edmonds provide assistance to the staff in many areas from clerical support to patient care areas. They are an extension of the staff in Edmonds striving to uphold our mission, vision and values. We offer different volunteer opportunities based on interest, education requirements and community outreach. ED Volunteer Program Our pre-nursing/pre-med volunteers help out in the ED. This program is for students going into the medical field to fulfill specific course requirements and also supports the staff in ways that allow them to focus on patient care and not restocking supplies. This gives students valuable insite into the medical field that they are training to one day be a part of. ACV Program Our senior project program or ACV (Advanced Care Volunteer) is for high school seniors ages 17-18 that are interested in the medical field. This program offers students the opportunity to volunteer on the nursing floors providing assistance to the nursing staff while experiencing the healthcare environment to support their career goals of going into healthcare. Surgery Liaison & Concierge Desk Volunteers Our courtesy desk volunteers provide support to the surgical families, visitors, staff and anyone that may need direction when coming to visit Swedish Edmonds. They are trained on Epic in order to deliver status updates to waiting families, as well as provide information for visitors on where to find loved ones or where to find their appointment location. They deliver gifts and flowers to patients and also discharge patients from several different floors to assist the nursing staff. Breast Center Volunteers in the breast imaging center assist staff in getting patients ready for their exams by showing them to the dressing area and explaining the dressing instructions. Volunteers also assist staff by resetting the dressing area for the next patient. They inform the technologist that the patient is ready and waiting also noting the time in the log. The volunteers make reminder calls for patients' appointments and help restock the supply areas. Clerical Support Volunteers assist staff with filing paperwork, scanning, copying, data entry projects, archiving information and any other support projects as needed. This position can be done in any area that has a need. Companionship Care Program Volunteers in this program provide comfort, support and companionship to patients by playing games, reading to the patient, delivering books or magazines for the patient to read on their own, playing a musical instrument or by just being a good listener. Volunteers are trained to identify patient problems and report them to the charge nurse immediately. Since critically ill newborns are frequently hospitalized for an extended period of time, parents find themselves emotionally and physically torn between their desires to visit with their infants and other life responsibilities. The Cuddle Program uses extensively trained volunteers to support the families of infants by providing comfort to their hospitalized infant. Through training, Cuddlers learn to handle, hold, rock, and cuddle stable infants-as an extension of the parents' role-as they convalesce from premature birth or other illnesses. Project Search - new program started September 2016 - Campus Wide This program supports students with disabilities in their final year of transition out of support services provided by the school district in learning skills that can be transferable into paid employment upon graduation.
