The Export Challenge was made possible by a grant from JPMorgan Chase Metro Atlanta Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Plan Launched in April 2016 to enhance our FDI strategy, the plan is focused on the following: _Embracing foreign M&A transactions as a key channel of global investment _Expanding metro Atlantas aftercare services _Positioning our region as the nations next great technology hub MAJOR WINS Together with our partners, MACs Economic Development team works to grow our economy and add jobs to the region. Recent wins include company expansions and the establishment of new facilities. These wins highlight how companies are making significant investments in the region that will have a positive economic impact for years to come. HD Supply - Expansion - North American HQ 500 jobs Papa John's - Recuritment - Food Processing 120 jobs Equifax - Expansion - Back Office 158 jobs The Bridge (Coca-Cola) - Startup Accelerator - Recuritment 5 jobs Wencor Group - Expansion - Manufacturing 260 jobs Kaiser Permanente - Expansion - Call Center 800 jobs Landis+Gyr - Expansion - North American HQ 50 jobs MAC Closes Out Successful Legislative Session Much of this legislative session was spent defending Georgias brand as the number one place to do business. MAC made good progress on expanding transit and worked to oppose legislation that would create a perception of discrimination in our state. The Free Exercise Protection Act (HB 757), passed on March 16 by the Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia Senate, was vetoed on March 28 by Governor Deal. We applaud Governor Deals decision to strike down this potentially damaging legislation. His thoughtful deliberation and consideration ensures that Georgia maintains its reputation as a business-friendly climate for job growth and opportunity for all people. Several bills that will improve our workforce pipeline, by increasing access to early training or dual enrollment programs for juniors and seniors in high school, passed during the session. The bills will reduce the overall number of standardized state tests for students in primary grades. To encourage more students to enroll in STEM college courses, the bills will also increase the weight of STEM classes in determining a graduating students HOPE scholarship eligibility. Our economic development partners will benefit from the renewal of the Projects of Regional Significance sales and use tax exemption, increased funding for Invest Georgia, removal of barriers for foreign nationals seeking drivers licenses and other tax credit measures. Finally, the General Assembly approved a sales tax waiver on tickets to non-recurring major sporting events, which is a crucial element to the citys ability to secure the Super Bowl and other major sporting events such as College Football Championships, Final Fours and MLB and NBA All-Star games. Key 2016 Bills FREE EXERCISE PROTECTION ACT Representative KEVIN TANNER Vetoed HB 757 creates grounds for a person or faith-based organization to contend that religious beliefs justify the denial of employment, goods or services to others. It also clarifies that clergy will not be forced to perform a marriage ceremony they find objectionable. MARTA EXPANSION BILL Senator JEFF MULLIS Passed SB 369 allows for a ballot initiative in the City of Atlanta that, if approved, would raise the sales tax by a half percent to fund MARTA expansion projects. HOPE WEIGHTING FOR STEM CURRICULUM Representative JAN JONES Passed HB 801 expands the weighting for STEM-focused classes to be included similar to Advanced Placement classes for the purposes of calculating HOPE scholarship eligibility. PROJECTS OF REGIONAL SIGNIFICANCE Representative BRETT HARRELL Passed HB 937 extends two tax code sunsets. First, it extends the current sales and tax exemption for construction projects of regional significance from 2016 to 2019. In addition to shaping important pro-jobs legislation, MACs Public Policy team played a pivotal role in guarding against negative outcomes that would have harmed Georgias business reputation. MAJOR SPORTING EVENT TICKET SALES TAX WAIVER Representative CHAD NIMMER Passed HB 951 eliminates the state sales taxes on Super Bowl tickets as well as other major nonrecurring sporting events expected to generate at least $50 million in other revenue, including all-star games for professional baseball, soccer and basketball and national college tournament finals or championships. The bill also renews the states sales tax holidays on the purchase of school supplies and energy-efficient appliances. In addition to shaping important pro-jobs legislation, MACs Public Policy team played a pivotal role in guarding against negative outcomes that would have harmed Georgias business reputation.Desc
