We are committed to increasing diversity in STEM and believe it is critical to support a diverse pool of talent to fuel the nation's future.- Mouse has positively impacted about 47,000 students nationwide.- 72% of students at Mouse sites in NYC are eligible for free or reduced priced lunch.- 56% of students at Mouse national sites are eligible for free or reduced priced lunch.- 44% of Mouse students are Latino/a or African American.- 39% of Mouse students are female.Mouses program trains and supports educators to empower a team of students to be digital media and technology experts. With our original, purpose-driven content, including Serious Games, Digital Portfolios, and Green Tech, students develop the technical, problem-solving, and leadership skills necessary to harness the power of technology to make a positive impact in their schools and communities.- 8,394 Students actively participating in Mouse- 655 Educators participating in Mouse- 56% of students at Mouse sites were eligible for free and reduced-price lunch- 378 Active Mouse sites nationwide, including: - 97 sites in California - 105 sites in New York - 102 sites in Minnesota - 21 sites in Pittsburgh - 20 sites in Dallas - 3 sites in Chicago - 30 sites in Florida, Idaho, Michigan, New Jersey, and OregonMouse Design LeagueMouse Design League is a youth-centered design and technology program that develops emerging leadership, professional and technical skills of high school students from Mouse sites across NYC.Students taking part in this year-long after school program are self-proclaimed geeks, techies, artists, activists, innovators and makers who will achieve over 100 hours of applied design, technology, workplace and leadership experience through their participation in the Mouse Design League.Mouse Design League students brainstorm, prototype, and present a technology project that addresses a social need, while building skills and exploring career pathways with technology mentors across diverse professional settings. Being a member of Mouse Design League helps students pursue their interests in technology and develop skills essential in todays workforce, including teamwork, project management, design, research, application, analytical thinking, problem solving, and leadership.This year's Mouse Design League groups researched, designed and prototyped four innovative Legacy Projects in FY17, each addressing a challenge identified by research, interviews, and observation in collaboration with volunteers from United Cerebral Palsy of NYC:Electra-Wallet: a device designed to help those with limited motor skills to easily access their credit cards, metro cards, and more without having to manipulate zippers or buttons or card slots.Locus: a wearable add-on designed to increase the freedom and independence of people, especially those with communication limitations and non-verbal disabilities to help family, teachers, or personal aids find their location via GPS and SMS texting.Omni-Joy: an accessible, portable game controller designed to make playing games more fun and social for all users, and more usable for people with limited mobility.Salvaje Adataple Clothing: a line of jackets and other clothing designed for people with limited mobility and people in wheelchairs to allow them to put on and take off their outer layers with more ease.Other Program HighlightsMouse Maker Nights: Mouse offered Maker Night events at the learning commons at Mouse HQ. These are free events that are open to all who want a space to tinker, make, build, and learn cool stuff. We offered 11 Maker Nights during the year for over 200 youth from all five boroughs. Experts in the field work with Mouses Learning Design team to lead workshops for students on coding, circuitry and electronics, crafts, 3D design, graphic design, and more.Intro to Design Course: This brand new course gives youth the skills they need to begin creating original graphics, visual displays, animations, and models. Participants learn the essential of good graphic and 3D design through 9 brand new activities.Design with Purpose Course: The curriculum weve long used in our Design League program is now available to the entire Mouse network! The Design with Purpose course shows youth how to research, brainstorm, prototype, and share their own technology innovation using the Human-Centered Design process.Monthly MicroProjects: Mouses monthly MicroProject competitions give our students the opportunity to get creative with free online tech tools and cover a wide range of topics, from creating gifs, to remixing games, and designing their own fonts. Over 3,000 students collaborated in the monthly competition to submit about 875 projects in the school year.Mouse Create Conference: Mouses annual October educator professional development event was renamed this year in honor of Mouse Create. There were 67 attendees from 53 Mouse Sites and 5 additional guests. To showcase the new learning platform there were 4 new workshops with content from new projects from Mouse Create. The workshops presented at Mouse Create Conference were Design and Build a Mobile App, Coding and Web Literacy, Design with Purpose, and IT Essentials. Each workshop featured 2 to 5 projects from Mouse Create.Mouse Mini-Con: At Create Conference in October, over 70% of Educators said they wanted a follow up PD session. In response, Mouse hosted two half day PD evenst at Mouse HQ in the winter and spring. Mouse Winter Mini-Con featured a hands on Coding Workshop and a Maker Space to tinker with technologies utilized in Mouse courses including Intro to Design, Circuitry & Electronics and Serious Games. Mouse Spring Mini-Con featured hands on Workshops in Coding and Networking, and a Maker Space to tinker with technologies utilized in Mouse courses including Circuitry & Electronics, Green Tech and Serious Games. Students who have successfully completed a full year of the Design League program can then be selected for the apprenticeship. This is supported with sign in sheets and attendance taken throughout the year. Once students have completed the full apprenticeship, they are reviewed and if their performance is satisfactory receive the $1,000 scholarship.
