The Civic offers world-class training in performance protocol under the guidance of Maestro Muti, Yo-Yo Ma, CSO musicians, guest conductors, and other artistic leaders from around the world. During the 2016/17 season, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago reached approximately 14,000 audience members. Approximately 90 young musicians (including alternates) participate in the Civic Orchestra each year. The Civic fellowship program - a curricular enhancement mentored by CSO Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma - doubled in size from the previous year and now features 14 fellows representing all sections of the Orchestra. Fellows gained valuable real world experience teaching private lessons, group classes, side-by-side modeling and coaching students in grades K-12. This year Civic partnered with The People's Music School for the first time, allowing fellows to teach at three community locations in the Albany Park, Back of the Yards, and Uptown neighborhoods. Additionally, this new partnership will continue to support expanded teaching and learning opportunities on the city's South Side at the Gary Comer Youth Center and Lara Academy as part of the Initiative for a Move Peaceful Chicago. More than 1,000 Civic alumni are currently engaged in professional music positions, including positions with top orchestras, around the world. Over the years, more than 75 Civic alumni have become CSO members, and fifteen current CSO musicians are Civic alumni. The Civic Orchestra of Chicago is the only pre-professional orchestra of its type associated with a major American orchestra.$111,849$49,632

Part V, Line 4:The Investment Committee, which oversees all the Corporation's investments, operates under investment and spending policies for endowment assets that attempt to provide a predictable stream of funding to programs, while seeking to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment assets. Under these policies, the endowment assets are invested in a manner that, over time, will meet the long-term objective of a 5% real return on assets. The Corporation's policy is to preserve the historical dollar value of permanently restricted contributions, and to use any of the investment returns as is prudent considering the Corporation's long- and short-term needs, resources, duration and preservation of donor-restricted endowment funds, donor restrictions, expected total return on its investments, price level trends, general economic conditions, and investment policies.
Part X, Line 2:Income Taxes The Corporation is exempt from federal and state income taxes under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code unless it has income from unrelated business activities. The Corporation follows the standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under this guidance, the Corporation may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the Corporation, continued tax exempt status of bonds payable, and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income. The tax benefits recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50 percent likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. At June 30, 2017 and 2016, there were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities. The Corporation files Form 990 in the U.S. federal jurisdiction and the State of Illinois. The Corporation is generally no longer subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service for years before the fiscal year ended June 30, 2014.

The premise for the concert was built on the belief that art and music play a vital role in not only addressing, but helping to solve the serious issues that confront our society. The concert, which brought attention to local programs that can reduce violence in Chicago's streets, featured internationally acclaimed cellist and CSO Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, mezzo-soprano Sarah Ponder Brock, musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the St. Sabina Church ensemble, and vocalists from the Chicago Children's Choir. As publicized, the Corporation donated the net concert ticket revenue to St. Sabina's anti-violence and Strong Futures employment programs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6The members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (the "Corporation") are designated as Governing Members. Governing Members are elected from among persons who have demonstrated a significant interest in the CSO and who meet such additional criteria as the Board of Trustees may from time to time determine.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7aGoverning Members ratify the election of Governing Members and, at each Annual Meeting, the fully ratified Governing Members elect Regular and Life Trustees.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11bCSO staff prepares Form 990, and it is reviewed by our tax advisor. Staff and the tax advisor discuss and review the entire Form 990 and Form 990-T with members of the CSO Audit Committee, who review and accept it before it is filed as set forth in the Committee Authority and Responsibility section of the Audit Committee charter. At its Spring meeting, the Board of Trustees was reminded of the Audit Committee's responsibility to review and approve the annual tax returns. The 2016 Form 990 and Form 990-T were reviewed and approved at the April 24, 2018 meeting of the Audit Committee.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cThe CSO maintains a Conflict of Interest Policy that applies to all trustees, the Executive Committees of certain auxiliary operations operating under the CSO's bylaws, senior management and other designated staff members, and non-trustee members of Trustee committees. The Policy requires each person to whom the policy applies to complete an annual disclosure questionnaire that discloses any business or financial interest, which might reasonably be expected to give rise to a possible conflict between the interest of the CSO and the interest of such person. The Policy forbids such individuals from voting on or using their personal influence in connection with such business or financial issues. In the event the CSO does conduct business with a related party, the financial terms of those relationships are reported annually to the Audit Committee, whose members are independent per the terms of its charter. The CSO requires each non-union employee to conduct themselves in accordance with the code of Business Conduct and Ethics, approved by the Board of Trustees, and to sign an annual statement acknowledging their understanding of and compliance with the Code.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15The process for determining the compensation of the President included a meeting on September 13, 2016, of the Human Resources Committee, which was comprised of six independent trustees and three non-trustees. The Committee reviewed the compensation arrangements and peer benchmark data based on size of budget and scope of management responsibility. Published compensation surveys for non-profit organizations were also reviewed. Recommendations were made to the Committee and accepted, and the deliberations of the Committee were documented in the minutes of the meeting. The process for determining the compensation of other officers or key employees included a meeting on September 13, 2016, of the Human Resources Committee, which was comprised of six independent trustees and three non-trustees.
