DescResearch: Our scientists study a broad array of research models to identify the cellular basis for regeneration and aging in humans and how environmental toxins such as arsenic and PFAS impact our susceptibility to disease. Our goal is to develop new therapeutic approaches to enhance our ability to repair cellular damage and resist the degenerative changes that occur with age.In 2024, we welcomed a new faculty member Dr. Emily Spaulding, whose outstanding research on the cellular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health. We were awarded a total of $30,821,832 in multi-year federal grant funding in 2024, including renewal of the largest state-wide research and training network connecting 17 academic and research institutions in Maine. Our scientists collaborated with 20 visiting scientists and continued to expand our early-stage drug discovery and translational research activities through MDI Biosciences.Desc

DescEducation:The MDI Biological Laboratory provides hands-on biomedical training to hundreds of students and professional from all around the world each year. 2024 was a milestone year for MDI Biological Laboratory as we celebrated the renewal of our Maine INBRE grant, a collaborative effort of 17 education and research institutions working to boost the State's research capacity and create a bioscience workforce in Maine. In 2024, we welcomed a new innovative course to campus, ReBilD: Emerging Leaders in Regenerative Biology and Development which explored multiple models for both developmental and regenerative biology through comparative biology experiments. This course was one of 21 courses and conferences hosted by MDI Bio Lab over the course of the year. We welcomed 27 master's and Ph.D. students from 14 countries, in addition to 22 undergraduate summer fellowship students. Our citizen science program facilitated 328 projects through Anecdata.org, identifying harmful algal cells in Frenchman Bay, testing well water and soil samples for the presence of arsenic, and other toxins.Desc

ExplanationThe Organization and/or its employees participate in various professional, scientific, and research associations and membership groups, including the Citizen Science Association, Society for Human Resources, the Society for Developmental Biology, and the Bioscience Association of Maine, among others. MDI Biological Laboratory's memberships with these organizations allows it to gain access to valuable benefits and resources that advance its charitable mission. However, a portion of the dues paid to these associations was available for lobbying activity by the associations on behalf of their members to advance scientific goals. The Organization estimates that during this tax year, of all dues and fees paid across all memberships, approximately $2,118 was available for lobbying purposes. The Organization also paid $2,500 to the Invest in Maine's Future campaign to advance a state bond which was related to the Organization's charitable mission. This amount is included within the $4,618 total reported on this Schedule C, Part II-B, Line 1f. Additionally, a nominal amount of employee staff time was devoted to meeting with members of the Maine Legislature for the purpose of discussing matters of scientific importance that directly relate to or impact the Organization's charitable mission. The Organization estimates that approximately $1,005 of employee expenses were paid during this tax year so that employees of the Organization could meet with and discuss such issues with political representatives in Augusta, Maine.ExplanationTxt

Part V, Line 4:Endowment Funds include both board designated quasi-endowments, permanent endowment, and temporarily restricted endowment funds. Board designated endowments are composed of funds voted to be set aside by the Board of Trustees for the purpose of generating a stream of income in support of the Organization's programs and operations. Permanent and temporarily restricted endowments are composed of funds with donor-imposed restrictions limiting the use of such funds for purposes such as research, education, and facilities. Such funds are set aside to generate a stream of income in furtherance of these purposes and, upon completion of time or use restraints, are released for expenditure.
Part X, Line 2:The Organization is exempt from taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Tax-exempt organizations could be required to record an obligation for income taxes as the result of a tax position they have historically taken on various tax exposure items, including unrelated business income or tax status. Under guidance issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), assets and liabilities are established for uncertain tax positions taken or positions expected to be taken in income tax returns when such positions are judged to not meet the "more-likely-than-not" threshold, based upon the technical merits of the position. Estimated interest and penalties, if applicable, related to uncertain tax positions are included as a component of income tax expense. Management has evaluated MDIBL's tax positions taken on its filed tax returns and concluded that MDIBL has maintained its tax-exempt status, does not have any significant unrelated business income and has taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the financial statements.

ExplanationDuring the period covered by this Form 990, the Organization engaged Bentz, Whaley, Flessner and Associates, Inc (BWF) to provide fundraising consulting services. BWF did not solicit contributions on behalf of the Organization, maintain or oversee any fundraising events, or engage or participate in any of the Organization's program services. Rather, the Organization independently utilized the data and insight provided by BWF to improve the Organization's own fundraising capabilities and expertise. The services provided by BWF were valuable and improved the Organization's ability to fundraise on its own, but no gross receipts or donations received by the Organization can be connected to the services provided by BWF, nor did BWF solicit any funds on the Organization's behalf. Accordingly, $0 is reported on this Form 990, Schedule G, Part I, Column iv. Additionally, while all boxes checked on this Schedule G, Part I, Line 1 indicate fundraising activities engaged in by the Laboratory, BWF did not contribute directly to any of those efforts.ExplanationTxt

ExplanationThe Mount Desert Island Biological Labs provides grants, awards, and scholarships to multiple organizations and individuals annually. Such awards are intrinsic to our exempt mission to advance scientific research and train the next generation of scientists, physicians and entrepreneurs. In part through our grants and awards programs, funded through federal grants and institutional endowment funds, The MDI Biological Laboratory provides biomedical training to more than 600 students each year. Our training programs emphasize hands-on experiences, problem solving, communication and partnership building. We offer opportunities to students and professionals at all levels, including middle and high school students, undergraduates, graduate students, and post-doctoral research fellows, as well as practicing physicians, veterinarians, scientists, teachers, and members of the public from all backgrounds. Additionally, we offer hands-on residential research fellowships to undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral fellows. Participants join our active, global scientific community and have access to state-of-the-art research laboratories and core facilities, support staff and our inspirational coastal setting. Outside of supporting the education of future scientific leaders, we also provide subawards to other collaborating scientific and research institutions through several grants including the Maine IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE). As the founder and leader of the Maine INBRE program, a collaborative network of 17 Maine educational and research institutions sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the MDI Biological Laboratory issues subawards to collaborating partners. The Maine INBRE strengthens Maine's capacity to conduct competitive biomedical research by focusing on three key areas: 1. Creating a technically skilled workforce in Maine through biomedical research training for undergraduates. 2. Providing research support to young faculty to increase their competitiveness for federal (NIH) biomedical research grants. 3. Improving the research infrastructure available to INBRE institutions through a collaborative network of core facilities with state-of-the-art equipment. The program provides research support and core facilities to junior faculty and creates research and training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. It serves as a pipeline for students interested in biomedical research careers and builds the scientific and technical capacity of Maine's workforce. The Organization adopts and maintains strict and thorough recordkeeping practices for all grants and awards, so that all expended funds are used as intended and in alignment with the mission of the Organization. Grants and awards are also subject to the review and oversight of top management and finance personnel. Due to the nature of the President's responsibilities, including the need for the President to be on campus and accessible at nearly all hours on a daily basis, this lodging has been deemed by the Organization to be furnished for the convenience of Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, and that such a living arrangement is required for the President's position. Accordingly, the value of the housing allowance has not been included in the President's taxable compensation, though it is included in the total amount of non-taxable benefits reported on this Schedule J, Part II, Column D. Additionally, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory maintains membership in a private club to foster business relationships and increase awareness of the mission of the institution. During this tax year the institution paid $2,305 in fees and dues to this club.
Part I, Line 7From time-to-time, subject to the Organization's compensation and benefit review and approval procedures and as budgets allow, the Organization may award bonuses, awards, incentive compensation, or other non-fixed payments to reward employees to accomplishing performance goals or for meeting terms of service milestones. Such payments are discretionary and based on pre-determined goals and evaluation metrics.
