| Desc | For more than 30 years, Big Thought has worked with communities and partners to close the opportunity gapthe disparity of access to resources for students to be college and career ready. Whether its a comprehensive after-school tutoring and enrichment program, an engaging visual arts and theater camp, or a workshop in coding and robotics, two consistent themes drive our work: 1.we empower youths creativity, and 2.we build social and emotional wellbeing. We do this in two ways: 1.we deliver innovative direct-to-youth educational programs, and 2.we leverage our partnerships to create change at the systems level, driving quality learning experiences to communities with the greatest need. Our partners include both large and small non-profit organizations, school districts, universities, libraries, city agencies, and businesses. Together, were equipping youth with the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. For more than 30 years, Big Thoughts work with children, parents, teachers, and institutions has been defined by:ACCESS - Big Thought provides unprecedented access to learning, engaging more than 180,000 young people every year in classrooms, after school, during summer and throughout the community.IMPACT - Young people learn more effectively in Big Thought programs: students develop 21st century skills, are engaged more deeply in learning, and are more successful on standardized tests than their peers.RESOURCES - Big Thought collaborates to leverage a wealth of resources, coordinating a vast network of community resources and other non-profits including schools, libraries, museums, nature centers, and food banks to support schools and other places where children learn, resulting in more people and institutions doing more to educate children.Principal activities: Direct to Youth Programs:Thriving Minds After School and Summer Camps after-school creative learning programs for more than 1,904 children on Dallas ISD campuses with over 281,000 student learning hours.Creative Solutions arts-as-workforce intervention program for more than 1,050 adjudicated youth each year. Creative Solutions uses a trauma-informed, results-driving model to promote lasting positive change in youth served. Artivism Local professional artists guide students to learn to express their thoughts through original artwork, poetry and performances that advocate for change.DaVerse Through an innovative curriculum, afterschool clubs and signature open mic performances, DaVerse is a safe haven for creative expression for more than 2,750 middle and high school students.The Fellowship Initiative The Fellowship Initiative, sponsored by JP Morgan Chase, provides 40 young men of color with a three-year, intensive program of peer learning and mentorship with a goal of equipping the young men with the education, skills and resources to achieve greater economic mobility.Learning Systems:Learning Partners arts and cultural programs integrated with in-school core subjects for more than 72,000 elementary school students on 152 campusesDallas City of Learning connects more than 96,000 youth from greater Dallas with low and no-cost learning experiences that cultivate creativity, build social and emotional skills and boost academic achievement.Library Out Loud engages creativity through no-cost cultural experiences for more than 1,000 children and caregivers throughout every branch of the Dallas Public Library.Major Accomplishments:Big Thought has grown to become a national model throughout our 30 years of innovation, having received the Presidents Committee on the Arts and Humanities Coming Up Taller Award in 2004, the Americans for the Arts 2009 Arts in Education Award, the Presidents Committee on the Arts and Humanities Champion of Change in 2011, the Texas Medal of Arts Award in 2013, the National Afterschool Alliances After-School Innovator Award in 2014 and the National Summer Learning Associations Founders Award for Dallas City of Learning in 2016. We have also partnered with large-scale national events such as the North Texas Super Bowl Host Committee and the NCAA Mens Final Four host committee to implement service learning programs. Big Thought has also been the recipient of several large, multi-year research grants through the Wallace Foundation, including our current grant as a part of the Social and Emotional Learning initiative, which provide outstanding programming to Dallas youth while establishing best practice models that can be implemented across the country. | Desc |
