| Desc | Artistic EndeavorsAfter canceling the balance of the 201920 Season and its usual slate of summer performances in early March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Symphony began turning out content to keep its audiences connected and entertained during quarantine. But above and beyond its on-demand content, the Symphony was in the vanguard of American orchestras with live digital performance. Beginning in May 2020 and continuing through June, the Symphony began livestreaming its Living Room Series. Each Friday night, a musician from the Houston Symphony hosted a live-streamed concert from their home, often including musically distinguished family members. The Symphonys performance in KTRKs livestreamed Spirit Over Texas Fourth of July Celebration marked the orchestras first performance from the Jones Hall stage since the pandemic lockdown, followed by Live From Jones Hall, a weekly series of livestream concerts of small ensembles (to allow social distancing onstage). Following guidance from the CDC as well as its medical advisors, the Symphony opened its 202021 Season with small socially-distanced ensembles onstage, as well as small, socially-distanced audiences in the house, becoming the first orchestra in the United States to resume a regular season before live audiences, in addition to a livestream audience that by the end of the season included viewers in all 50 states and more than 35 countries. Highlights of this season included guest appearances by George Li performing Haydns Piano Concerto No. 11 in D, James Ehnes leading and performing as soloist in Mendelssohns Violin Concerto in E minor, Yefim Bronfman in Beethovens Piano Concerto No 3 in C minor, Hilary Hahn performing Mozarts Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, JNai Bridges, Midori performing Beethovens Violin Concerto in D major, Esa-Pekka Salonen leading a fascinating program comprising Beethovens Symphony No. 1 in C major and four composers (including Salonen himself) takes on J.S. Bach, and Itzhak Perlman who performed for the first time in 15 months to begin his COVID-delayed three-year residency with the Houston Symphony. Highlights also included Houston Symphony Principal Timpani Leonardo Soto as soloist in J.C. Fischers Symphony in C major with Eight Obligato Timpani, Principal Cello Brinton Averil Smith in Haydns Cello Concerto No. 2, Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio in Coplands Clarinet Concerto under the baton of Music Director Designate Juraj Valcuha, Principal Percussion Brian Del Signore in the Second Movement of his own Percussion Concerto, Concertmaster Yoonshin Song in Astor Piazzollas Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, and Houston Symphony principals Mark Nuccio, Rian Craypo, William VerMeulen, Yoonshin Song, MuChen Hsieh, Joan DerHovsepian, Brinton Averil Smith, and Robin Kesselman in Schuberts Octet in F major. | Desc | Education and CommunityThe Houston Symphony is committed to increasing the quality of life in Houston by addressing priority community issues including education, healthcare, building community between disparate populations, and improving the welfare of underserved populations. The Symphony accomplishes this by presenting an extraordinary range of music education and community engagement programs both inside Jones Hall and in community venues throughout the Greater Houston area. Through nearly 1,000 interactions with Houston Symphony musicians and community-embedded musicians, partnerships with schools, community centers, hospitals and other non-profits, the Society serves a wide range of Houstonians that reflects the diversity of the city. Whether they are underserved students, cancer patients, refugees, or homeless families, we put the people we serve first, asking how music can best meet their needs. Our goal is to remove economic and geographical barriers to music so that Houstonians from all walks of life can benefit from the art form. Houston Symphony Education and Community Engagement programs served more than 200,000 Houstonians of all ages and backgrounds and represented an investment of $4.7 million, or more than 21% of the annual organization budget, during the 202021 Season. | Desc |
