| ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | FORM 990, PART I, LINE 1 GEORGIAN COURT OFFERS A COMPREHENSIVE LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC TRADITION, WITH A SPECIAL CONCERN FOR WOMEN, AND IS COMMITTED TO ITS CORE VALUES OF JUSTICE, RESPECT, INTEGRITY, SERVICE, AND COMPASSION. |
| FORM 990, PART III, 4A | INSTRUCTIONAL DEGREE PROGRAM IN 2020-21 GEORGIAN COURT UNIVERSITY ENROLLED 2,231 STUDENTS IN 37 UNDERGRADUATE AND MORE THAN 13 DISTINCTIVE GRADUATE PROGRAMS THROUGH THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND DIGITAL COMMUNICATION, THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, THE HACKENSACK MERIDIAN HEALTH SCHOOL OF NURSING, AND THE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES. THE UNIVERSITY'S FASTEST-GROWING AND MOST COMPETITIVE DEGREE PROGRAM, THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN), BENEFITS FROM ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH HACKENSACK MERIDIAN HEALTH, ONE OF THE LARGEST HEALTHCARE NETWORKS IN NEW JERSEY. DURING THE 2020-21 ACADEMIC YEAR, 18 STUDENTS ENTERED THE UNIVERSITY'S NEW ACCELERATED BACHELOR OF NURSING (ABSN) PROGRAM, INTENDED FOR PREVIOUS COLLEGE GRADUATES SEEKING TO BECOME NURSES. THE NEW ABSN PROGRAM IS ONE OF THE MANY WAYS GCU CONTINUES TO MEET MARKETPLACE DEMANDS. AT THE GRADUATE LEVEL, WORKING PROFESSIONALS CONTINUE TO FIND GCU DEGREE PROGRAMS AND CERTIFICATE TRACKS BOTH ATTRACTIVE AND EFFECTIVE. IN FACT, A 2021 SURVEY OF GCU GRADUATE STUDENTS FOUND 87 PERCENT WERE SOMEWHAT OR EXTREMELY SATISFIED WITH THEIR UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE. THE 2020-21 ACADEMIC YEAR SAW THE CONTINUED PROGRESS OF GCU'S FIRST DOCTORAL STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE PSY.D. PROGRAM, WITH A CONCENTRATION IN SCHOOL COUNSELING. OUR HISTORY GEORGIAN COURT, LOCATED IN HISTORIC LAKEWOOD, NEW JERSEY, IS THE ONLY CATHOLIC INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION SERVING RESIDENTS THROUGHOUT CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY. THE UNIVERSITY HAS HISTORIC ROOTS AS A WOMEN'S COLLEGE, AND SERVED MEN IN EVENING AND GRADUATE COURSES, USUALLY PART-TIME, UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2012. GCU BECAME FULLY COEDUCATIONAL IN SEPTEMBER 2013 WITH THE ADDITION OF MEN IN CAMPUS RESIDENCE HALLS AND THE LAUNCH OF MEN'S ATHLETICS. BY THE 2020-21 ACADEMIC YEAR, GCU'S UNDERGRADUATE POPULATION WAS 73% FEMALE AND 27% MALE WITH MEN PARTICIPATING IN SPORTS, STUDENT GOVERNMENT, CAMPUS MINISTRY, CAMPUS LEADERSHIP, AND RESIDENCE LIFE. GCU PROVIDES ALL STUDENTS WITH A VALUES-BASED LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION THAT (1) ENHANCES THEIR MARKETABILITY AFTER GRADUATION; (2) EMPHASIZES PURPOSEFUL LEADERSHIP; AND (3) PREPARES THEM TO MAKE MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTIONS IN THEIR CAREERS, IN COMMUNITIES AND IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS. AT THE SAME TIME, GCU EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF FORMATION, WHOLE-PERSONHOOD AND EXPERIENCES THAT HELP STUDENTS BECOME JUST AND COMPASSIONATE MEMBERS OF SOCIETY. THE GCU OFFICE OF MISSION OFTEN LEADS THESE EFFORTS THROUGH SPECIAL PROGRAMMING, COLLOQUIA FOCUSED ON CATHOLIC INTELLECTUAL TRADITION, AND BY CREATING EXPERIENTIAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS. AS A ROMAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY, GCU WELCOMES STUDENTS FROM ALL RELIGIOUS, ETHNIC, AND SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS. THE ENTIRE GCU COMMUNITY BENEFITS FROM THE UNIVERSITY'S EMBRACE OF ITS MERCY CORE VALUES OF RESPECT, INTEGRITY, JUSTICE, COMPASSION, AND SERVICE. GCU WAS ACKNOWLEDGED DURING THE 2020-21 ACADEMIC YEAR BY U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT IN ITS BEST REGIONAL UNIVERSITIES NORTH RANKINGS. AT #109, THE RANKINGS NOTED THE INCREASING PERCENTAGE OF FIRST-YEAR GCU STUDENTS WHO GRADUATE IN THE TOP 25% OF THEIR HIGH SCHOOL CLASS. GCU ALSO IMPROVED ITS PREDICTED VS. ACTUAL GRADUATION RATE, AND PLACED 89TH IN THE CATEGORY OF TOP PERFORMERS FOR SOCIAL MOBILITY. THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE GEORGIAN COURT UNIVERSITY EXCELS AT DELIVERING A CURRICULUM THAT IS DESIGNED TO ENGAGE STUDENTS AND ALLOWS FOR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL EXPLORATION IN THEIR COURSEWORK IN AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM. THE 2020-21 ACADEMIC YEAR BROUGHT UNUSUAL CHALLENGES AND PRESSURES BECAUSE OF COVID-19. YET, GCU STUDENTS RESPONDING TO THE NATIONAL SURVEY OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT (NSSE) PULSE SURVEY, 71 PERCENT OF STUDENTS RATED THEIR INTERACTION WITH FACULTY AS GOOD OR EXCELLENT DURING THIS TIME. TWO OUT OF THREE (67 PERCENT) SAID GCU PROVIDED VERY MUCH OR QUITE A BIT OF SUPPORT TO HELP THEM SUCCEED ACADEMICALLY. ALSO, 60 PERCENT OF STUDENTS SAID THEIR COURSES HIGHLY CHALLENGED THEM TO DO TO THEIR BEST WORK. GCU'S SMALL STUDENT-FACULTY RATIO ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN IN HIGHLY PERSONALIZED CLASSES AND ENABLES STUDENTS TO DO WELL-BEYOND ACADEMICS- BECAUSE OF HIGH-IMPACT LEARNING PRACTICES. THESE INCLUDE LEARNING COMMUNITIES, SERVICE LEARNING, RESEARCH WITH FACULTY, STUDY ABROAD, INTERNSHIPS AND SENIOR CAPSTONES. SUCH HIGH-IMPACT PRACTICES (HIIP) ARE A STRENGTH AT GEORGIAN COURT. NSSE RESULTS FOR 2021 INDICATE 55 PERCENT OF FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN SUCH PRACTICES, COMPARED TO 53 PERCENT OF THEIR PEERS AT OTHER MID-EAST COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. BY SENIOR YEAR, 79 PERCENT OF GCU STUDENTS HAD AT LEAST TWO HIGH-IMPACT EXPERIENCES, COMPARED TO 69 PERCENT OF THEIR PEERS ELSEWHERE. ONE SIGNIFICANT EXAMPLE OF HIGH-IMPACT PRACTICES IN ACTION WAS THE WORK OF GCU NURSING STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC. IN FALL 2020, GEORGIAN COURT NURSING STUDENTS RETURNED TO CLINICAL SETTINGS AT HACKENSACK MERIDIAN HEALTH AND OTHER HOSPITALS. ABOUT 40 PERCENT OF THE NURSING SCHOOL'S MAY 2021 GRADUATES WORKED AT A HOSPITAL DURING THE PANDEMIC, AND MANY STUDENTS VOLUNTEERED TO ADMINISTER COVID-19 VACCINES AT LOCAL IMMUNIZATION SITES. ACROSS ALL MAJORS, GCU SENIORS RATED SELECT AREAS OF THEIR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE HIGHER THAN SENIORS ELSEWHERE. THEY REPORTED MORE COURSES THAT INCLUDED A COMMUNITY-BASED PROJECT AND MORE CULMINATING SENIOR EXPERIENCES. THEY ALSO GAVE HIGHER RATINGS TO TWO OTHER AREAS: THE INCLUSION OF DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES IN COURSE DISCUSSION OR ASSIGNMENTS, AND THE INSTITUTION'S EMPHASIS ON ATTENDING EVENTS THAT ADDRESS IMPORTANT SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND POLITICAL ISSUES. GCU'S LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, ITS APPROACHABLE FACULTY AND ITS EXTENSIVE RANGE OF PROGRAMS AIMED AT ENSURING STUDENT SUCCESS ARE IMPORTANT TO ALL LEARNERS. THEY ARE CRITICAL, HOWEVER, TO THOSE WHO ARE FIRST IN THEIR FAMILIES TO ATTEND COLLEGE. ABOUT 39 PERCENT OF ALL GCU STUDENTS IN 2020-21 WERE FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS. THIS APPROACH IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO THE SUCCESS OF GCU STUDENTS FROM LOWER-INCOME FAMILIES, INCLUDING THE 43 PERCENT OF STUDENTS WHO RECEIVED FEDERAL PELL GRANTS IN 2020-21. ACCOLADES GEORGIAN COURT RECEIVED SEVERAL ACCOLADES IN 2020-21, INCLUDING BEING AMONG THE BEST INSTITUTIONS IN THE NORTHEAST REGION, AS RANKED BY U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT. THE MAGAZINE ALSO NOTED GCU'S ABILITY TO HELP STUDENTS FROM MODEST FINANCIAL BACKGROUNDS MOVE INTO THE MIDDLE CLASS. IN 2021, MOODY'S INVESTOR SERVICES IMPROVED GCU'S OUTLOOK TO "STABLE," CITING IMPROVED OPERATING PERFORMANCE IN FISCAL YEAR 2020 AND STABILIZATION OF FINANCIAL RESULTS IN FISCAL YEAR 2021. STANDARD & POOR'S UPGRADED GCU TO "STABLE" NOTING HOW THE INSTITUTION MAINTAINED AVAILABLE RESOURCES DESPITE PANDEMIC PRESSURES, IMPROVED FRESHMAN MATRICULATION, AND NEW PROGRAM OFFERINGS. GROWTH, RETENTION AND ACHIEVEMENT JUST AS THE UNIVERSITY CONTINUES TO GRADUATE HIGH-QUALITY, HIGH-PERFORMING ALUMNI, GCU IS ATTRACTING BETTER PREPARED STUDENTS. FOR EXAMPLE, IN FALL 2020, THE AVERAGE INCOMING FRESHMAN ATHLETE HAD A 3.5 GPA, AND AMONG ALL FRESHMEN, 81 PERCENT REMAINED AT GCU TO BECOME SOPHOMORES, POINTING TO STRONG RATES OF RETENTION. GCU'S MOMENTUM WAS NOT LIMITED TO ITS HISTORIC LAKEWOOD CAMPUS. DURING 2020-21, GCU CONTINUED TO ATTRACT SOCIAL WORK MAJORS AT THE UNIVERSITY'S CUMBERLAND COUNTY SITE, AND OTHER MAJORS TO GCU@HAZLET, THE UNIVERSITY'S PARTNER CAMPUS WITH BROOKDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE. THE UNIVERSITY'S GRADUATE PROGRAMS CONTINUED TO THRIVE ONLINE, ENROLLING CAREER PROFESSIONALS FROM ACROSS NEW JERSEY AND BEYOND. THE UNIVERSITY'S NEWLY ESTABLISHED CENTER FOR PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (CPS) DELIVERED EXECUTIVE AND CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES IN SUCH AREAS AS HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE. IN ADDITION, THE GCU BEGAN TO OFFER MINORS IN AFRICANA STUDIES, ETHICS, MULTIETHNIC STUDIES, SOCIAL JUSTICE, AND SOCIOLOGY. PROGRAMMING TO SUPPORT LATINX STUDENTS ALSO LAUNCHED WITH AVANZANDO, AN OUTGROWTH OF THE NATIONALLY ESTABLISHED UNIDOS-US ORGANIZATION. AVANZANDO FACILITATED WORKSHOPS, EXPERIENCES AND RESOURCES TO GCU STUDENTS WHO IDENTIFY AS LATINO. THE UNIVERSITY'S OVERARCHING COMMITMENT TO EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION WAS HIGHLIGHTED WITH THE SUCCESSFUL HIRING OF TWO CHIEF DIVERSITY OFFICERS. IN 2021, THE TWO NEW OFFICERS FURTHER INTEGRATED THE WORK OF DEI INTO THE GREATER MISSION IDENTITY AND VISION OF THE UNIVERSITY. |
| GRANTS & GIVING | FALL 2020 MARKED THE START OF A NEW TRIO-STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES GRANT FOR MORE THAN $1.69 MILLION. THE FIVE-YEAR GRANT WILL HELP FIRST-GENERATION, LOW-INCOME, AND STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES SUCCEED IN COLLEGE AND GRADUATE. GCU HAS BEEN A TRIO-SSS INSTITUTION FOR 40 YEARS. THE GRANT UNDERWRITES ACADEMIC TUTORING, PERSONAL COUNSELING, MENTORING, FINANCIAL GUIDANCE, AND OTHER SERVICES, TO HELP UPWARD OF 160 STUDENTS EACH YEAR. IN ADDITION, GCU SECURED NEARLY $2.5 MILLION FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR A NEW PROGRAM CALLED TRANSITION AND CAREER STUDIES (TCS). THE TCS INITIATIVE WAS AMONG ONLY 22 NEW PROPOSALS FUNDED IN 2020-21THROUGH TRANSITION AND POSTSECONDARY PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES (TPSID)-THE FEDERAL EFFORT TO SUPPORT COMPREHENSIVE TRANSITION AND POSTSECONDARY PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES. THE OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT FOCUSED ON AGGRESSIVE, BUT ATTAINABLE FUNDRAISING TARGETS WHICH RESULTED IN THE STRONGEST FUNDRAISING YEAR IN 10 YEARS. THIS INCLUDED RECORD-SETTING FUNDRAISING FROM MAJOR GIFT DONORS AND PLANNED GIVING. INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT RAISED OVER $2.3M, UP FROM $1.6M THE YEAR BEFORE, AND EXCEEDED FUNDRAISING TARGETS FOR CORPORATION AND FOUNDATIONS (103%) AND PLANNED GIVING (342%). DURING THIS TIME, ADVANCEMENT SECURED ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR NURSING STUDENTS AND THOSE STUDYING HEALTH PROFESSIONS. A $200,000 DONATION MADE BY THE JULES L. PLANGERE, JR. FAMILY FOUNDATION PROVIDED CRUCIAL SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT TO AN AREA WHERE OF GREAT NEED. ALSO, A $24,500 GRANT FROM THE PROVIDENT BANK FOUNDATION FUNDED A NEWBORN TORY NEONATAL SIMULATOR, GIVING NURSING STUDENTS ACCESS TO IMPORTANT DEMONSTRATIONS, HANDS-ON INSTRUCTION, AND TESTING MODULES. THESE AND OTHER EFFORTS STRENGTHEN RETENTION AND REFLECT THE UNIVERSITY'S ONGOING COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, ACCESSIBILITY, AFFORDABILITY, AND ITS HISTORIC CORE VALUES. |
| COMMITMENT TO CORE VALUES THROUGH SERVICE | SERVICE, A GCU CORE VALUE, IS EMBEDDED IN EXPERIENCES THROUGHOUT THE CURRICULUM AND STUDENT LIFE. THE 2020-21 YEAR BROUGHT REPEAT HONORS FROM THE NCAA'S 'HELPER HELPER' COMPETITION; EACH YEAR GCU ATHLETES PARTICIPATE IN THE NATIONAL PROGRAM BY VOLUNTEERING IN THE COMMUNITY. ONE EXAMPLE IS THE MEN'S SOCCER TEAM'S COMMITMENT TO THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DEPAUL, WHICH BENEFITS FROM THE ATHLETES WEEKLY COMMITMENT TO HELP FAMILIES ACQUIRE AND MOVE DONATED FURNITURE. HUNDREDS OF OTHER STUDENTS GAVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM WITH CAMPUS MINISTRY, THE COUNCIL FOR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION, THE SOCIAL WORK CLUB, THE EDUCATION CLUB, AND VARIOUS ACADEMIC CLASSES. THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2021 ALSO REFLECTED ON A SERVICE TRADITION THEY STARTED WITH THE INTERNATIONAL RELIEF ORGANIZATION, RISE AGAINST HUNGER. THESE STUDENTS ASSEMBLED MORE THAN 900 MEAL KITS FOR NEEDY, INTERNATIONAL FAMILIES. AT THE SAME TIME, STUDENTS ADDRESSED LOCAL FOOD INSECURITY ISSUES BY GROWING SERVICES OFFERED BY THE GCU CAMPUS FOOD PANTRY. STUDENT NEED AT GCU IN 2020-21, ABOUT 99 PERCENT OF FULL-TIME FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS RECEIVED FINANCIAL AID, WITH AN AVERAGE PACKAGE OF $30,421. OVERALL, 601 STUDENTS WERE AWARDED ABOUT $2.8 MILLION IN PELL GRANT FUNDING. IN ADDITION, THE GENEROSITY OF INDIVIDUALS AND FOUNDATION DONORS PROVIDES FOR MANY SCHOLARSHIPS. IN ADDITION, THE UNIVERSITY FUNDS MORE THAN $17 MILLION IN INSTITUTIONAL AID EACH YEAR. |
| FORM 990, PART III, 4C | STUDENT ATHLETES & PROGRAMS AS A MEMBER OF THE CENTRAL ATHLETIC COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE, GCU HAD 276 ATHLETES PARTICIPATING IN NCAA DIVISION II SPORTS. PROGRAMS ATTRACTED HIGH-ACHIEVING SCHOLAR-ATHLETES IN BASKETBALL, CROSS COUNTRY, LACROSSE, SOCCER, SOFTBALL, VOLLEYBALL, AND BOTH INDOOR AND OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD. FRESHMEN ATHLETES AT GCU COME TO COLLEGE WELL-PREPARED: THE AVERAGE GPA IN FALL 2020 FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN ATHLETES WAS 3.5. STUDENT-ATHLETES ALSO GRADUATE AT RATES HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE; AT GCU, THE SIX-YEAR GRADUATION RATE FOR ALL ATHLETES ON SCHOLARSHIPS WAS 65 PERCENT IN 2020-21. |
