ExplanationNo provision for federal income taxes is recorded in the accompanying consolidated financial statements. In accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles, the Foundation recognizes the income tax benefits, if any, of uncertain tax positions only when the position is "more likely than not" to be sustained assuming examination by federal taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the Foundation's tax positions taken on federal income tax returns subject to possible examination by federal taxing authorities (years ended December 31, 2020 through 2023) and concluded the Foundation did not require a provision for any uncertain tax positions as of December 31, 2023 and 2022.ExplanationTxt

Form 990, Part III, Line 2 New program servicesEvery organization has a year or years representing a significant turning point or launch point. For the Kansas Health Foundation, 2023 was such a year. Early in the year, the KHF Board of Directors approved a new strategic framework to guide all our work and center our efforts around the investments and activities we believe will have the greatest impact on health in our state. Moving forward, all our work will revolve around a new three-part purpose statement: 1) Empower Kansas to lead to the nation in health 2) Eliminate the inequities that lead to the greatest health disparities 3) To become THE model for philanthropic impact While our organization continued with many forms of traditional grantmaking, and we continued to support longtime institutional partners like the Kansas Health Institute and the Kansas Leadership Center, 2023 also became a year of planning and development for the future. With the new strategic framework in hand, extensive planning efforts happened on the following topics: * How to work more closely with the communities in Kansas experiencing the greatest health disparities. * What it would look like to double down on specific major health challenges and rally our entire network to work on such an issue. * Reinventing a framework for utilizing policy at various levels to move the needle on health outcomes. * Exploring ways to extend our economic reach beyond traditional grantmaking and utilize more of our resources to make direct impact. * How the physical infrastructure of our campus location could best highlight our partners and better represent the health-focused work happening around the state. * Reimagining how KHF views, establishes and sustains partnerships with influential organizations and agencies. With 2023 representing a year of planning, 2024 was set up well to become a year of action.
