Schedule D, Part X, Line 2The American Board of Pediatrics Foundation (ABPF) recognizes the tax benefit from a tax position only if it is more likely than not the tax position will be sustained on examination by tax authorities based on the technical merits of the position. The ABPF has analyzed its tax positions for filings with the Internal Revenue Service. The ABPF believes that its income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on the ABPF's financial condition, results of operations, or cash flows. Accordingly, the ABPF has not recorded any tax assets or liabilities, or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain tax positions for the years ended October 31, 2023 and 2022.

Form 990, Part I, Line 1The American Board of Pediatrics Foundation (ABPF) undertakes strategic initiatives on behalf of the American Board of Pediatrics to advance the science, education, study, and practice of pediatrics. These initiatives are intended to support research on contemporary pediatric issues, the dialogue among health care leaders to improve the quality of physician training and pediatric care, and programs that will improve the practice of pediatrics. To achieve its mission, the ABP Foundation collaborates with other healthcare organizations, with the ultimate goal to improve quality of health care during infancy, childhood, adolescence, and the transition into adulthood.
Form 990, Part III, Line 1The American Board of Pediatrics Foundation (ABPF) supports the mission of the ABP to ensure excellence in the education of pediatricians and the delivery of pediatric care. The ABP Foundation achieves its goal by pursuing rigorous research, convening collaborators in health care, developing and disseminating collective expertise, and promoting innovation, ultimately fostering the health and well-being of children and families.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4aPediatric Subspecialty Workforce Modeling Project. This is a potentially exciting time for health care for children from infancy through young adulthood with chronic medical conditions requiring specialized care. Improvements in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through both scientific and technological advances and the widespread use of quality improvement initiatives may be able to change child health outcomes as well as adult health outcomes. Indeed, congenital variations, epigenetics, exposures, lifestyle, preventive care, and medical interventions from conception through young adulthood set the stage for health and well-being in adulthood. Care provided by pediatric subspecialists is associated with better outcomes and lower costs compared to adult providers, Yet, recent articles in the lay and medical literature have questioned the capacity of pediatric subspecialists to meet children's healthcare needs. The last decade has also witnessed increasing numbers of children with acute or chronic physical and mental health disorders including medical complexity, obesity, type 2 diabetes, anxiety, depression, and suicidality, all of which are exacerbated by poverty, racism, and other social drivers of health. This 5-year study sought to: (1) describe the current variability in demographics, practice characteristics, and geographic distribution of the 15 core pediatric subspecialties certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, and (2) develop a workforce projection model to estimate the future supply of pediatric subspecialists in the United States (US) and regions of the US from 2018 to 2040. The model contains numerous "what if" scenarios that allow users to simulate the effects of changes in retirement, graduate medical education, and other factors that influence the future supply and distribution of the workforce. The model serves as the initial step in creating a supply and demand analysis that estimates the degree to which the number and distribution of pediatric subspecialists meet the clinical needs of the US pediatric population nationally and regionally. In FY23, a 19-article supplement to Pediatrics was successfully submitted and accepted for February 2024 publication. Links to the supplement, the interactive visualization model, related workforce efforts, and a summary video are available on the ABP Research Data and Workforce webpage.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4bEPA Crosswalk Study. Competency-based medical education has been an important strategic priority for the ABP for almost a decade. In 2021, the ABP Board of Directors committed to implementing Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) as part of certification decision-making in the next seven years. EPAs delineate major professional activities that a pediatrician is expected to be able to perform without supervision at the conclusion of residency training. An important part of preparing for this implementation is continued research on the use of EPAs in general pediatrics training programs. As EPAs are implemented in training programs, one issue that requires resolution is creating a connection between the milestones that are required to be reported to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the EPAs. To that end, the ABP Foundation developed and funded the Crosswalk Study in November 2021. This study has three distinct components. The first major goal of the Crosswalk Study is to determine the relationship between milestones and EPAs, allowing one to be "cross-walked" to the other, allowing primary assessment and reporting based on one and secondary assessment and reporting based on the other. Specifically, EPAs could be assessed primarily with the ability to crosswalk and 'auto-populate' milestones for secondary use and reporting. The second goal of the Crosswalk Study is to determine generalizable best practices for implementing EPA-based assessment in pediatric residency programs by exploring what does and does not work, for whom, how, and under what circumstances in programs implementing the general pediatrics EPAs. The third part of the investigation includes assessing the equity of EPA-based assessment and decision-making. As of February 2024, data have been collected from approximately 4,000 individual residents from 64 programs participating in the Crosswalk Study (48 pediatrics programs and 16 medicine-pediatrics programs). Over 125,000 individual entrustment decisions have been collected, including data for all 17 general pediatrics EPAs. In addition to connecting these EPA assessments to ACGME milestones, these data will be used to ensure the high reliability of decisions being made by training programs, particularly at the time of graduation. The second part of the study, focused on defining best practices, is ongoing and includes interviews with stakeholders from participating programs. Data collection has also begun for the equity aim of the study, and preliminary data will be presented at an upcoming conference in the spring of 2024.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4cRoadmap. The ABP Foundation has provided funding since February 1, 2017, to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center to "Develop a Roadmap to Support the Emotional and Mental Health Needs of Patients with Chronic Illness and their Families." Parents of children with chronic illness and healthcare professionals partnered together to: (1) Use a systematic process to understand patient and family needs for emotional support and mental health, with an initial focus on patients with chronic illness and their families; (2) Identify current strategies for addressing emotional support and mental health of patients with chronic illness and their families from literature review, current network initiatives and other relevant organizational efforts; (3) Develop a change package that can be used to raise awareness and provide specific strategies for pediatric subspecialists to identify and address patient and family needs for emotional and mental health support; (4) Provide metrics for networks and organizations to use that will assess and monitor efforts to improve emotional support and mental health for patients and families; (5) Facilitate the adoption of individual network initiatives that address the emotional support and mental health needs of patients and families; and (6) Develop a cross-network initiative to accelerate the improvement of emotional support and mental health for patients and families. In FY21, the project team completed a 16-month Learning Collaborative with 11 subspecialty teams from 9 children's hospitals to test and revise the Roadmap Change Package, identify key steps for implementing emotional support for patients and families, develop novel resources, and consider the impact of implicit bias and racism on living with chronic conditions. In FY22, the project team completed a learning collaborative with cardiology teams caring for infants, children, and adolescents with congenital heart disease. The team also implemented Part 2 and Part 4 activities for Maintenance of Certification and built a separate website. It continued its plan for disseminating and spreading Roadmap, summarized current financial strategies for addressing emotional and behavioral health (by identifying current billing practices, use cases, and resources), and presented at numerous organizational meetings and workshops. The team also successfully applied for a small supplementary grant from a private family foundation. In 2022, various metrics were tracked to assess the work's progress, including the successful launch and completion of Roadmap College, a 6-month program involving 15 cardiology teams. An impressive 79% of the program participants reported hearing at least one implementable idea, underscoring the program's effectiveness in providing valuable insights. In addition, a monthly newsletter distributed to over 700 individuals on the listserve achieved an exceptional open rate of 44.8%, far exceeding the industry average. In the spring of 2022, Roadmap launched a new website, and most materials were moved there. Nevertheless, the Roadmap webpage on the ABP website still received 3,288 unique pageviews, and the behavioral and mental health page had 1,101 unique pageviews. The team successfully completed and published a manuscript on the impact of being Black on the hospitalization experience. In FY23, the Roadmap Change Package was revised, based on lessons learned from the aforementioned Roadmap College webinar series, to more succinctly articulate the test strategies, provide clear links to Roadmap tools and resources, and incorporate patient/family and clinician quotes to emphasize the importance of implementing lasting changes. The updated package includes (1) the Roadmap key driver diagram, (2) an aim statement, (3) improvement measures, (4) the Roadmap Five-Step Plan, and (5) the Roadmap Readiness Assessment. This continues to be a living document, expanding and improving as new resources and strategies arise, and we anticipate the next update will include significant changes from a DEI lens. In addition, a key dissemination and spread activity was designed to launch The Roadmap to Emotional Health Improvement Collaborative in FY23 and FY24. This included developing a work plan and associated timeline, outlining recruitment, onboarding, curriculum, call preparation, and other key activities. In total, 71 attendees from 27 hospitals participated in the planning calls, and 17 hospitals and 39 subspecialty teams across 15 subspecialties participated in the collaborative launch. As part of Roadmap, the article, "The Impact of Being Black While Living with a Chronic Condition: Inpatient Perspectives," was published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine. Co-written with parents, the article describes the experiences of Black patients and families within healthcare and the additional burdens of navigating implicit bias and racism within the system.
