DescInstructional Services: Nova Southeastern University (NSU) offers undergraduate degrees, graduate and first professional degrees, and certificate programs to more than 20,000 full-time and part-time students in a wide range of fields, including the humanities, biological and environmental sciences, business, counseling, computer and information sciences, conflict resolution, education, family therapy, medicine, dentistry, various other health professions, law, marine science, performing and visual arts, psychology, and other social sciences. Courses are taught at 4 South Florida campuses; 8 regional campus locations, including Puerto Rico; and at sites in 3 states, as well as foreign countries. (continued on Schedule O)NSU has 15 colleges and schools: Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice; College of Dental Medicine; College of Computing and Engineering; College of Optometry; Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy; College of Psychology; Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine; Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine; Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences; Farquhar Honors College; H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship; Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center; Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing; Shepard Broad College of Law; and the NSU University School. Expanding Undergraduates and Health Professions Programs:In fall 2022, NSU welcomed its largest undergraduate class with 1,978 first-time-in-college freshmen, an increase of 17 percent from its prior record of 1,689 in fall 2020. In line with NSU's strategic expansion of undergraduates, overall undergraduate enrollment has increased for the sixth year in a row, standing at 6,971 in fall 2022. The distinctive Dual Admission Program, offering prospective undergraduate students a reserved spot in selective graduate/professional programs, has continued to attract academically highly qualified students, supporting strategic goals for enhanced student quality, experience, and outcomes. Increased professional-level enrollment during fiscal 2023 was driven by strategic health professions expansion, with continued growth at the Tampa Bay Regional Campus. NSU's Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM) expanded its D.O. program to Tampa Bay beginning fall 2019. In fall 2022, KPCOM admitted its fourth class of 164 D.O. students in Tampa Bay, for a total Tampa Bay D.O. enrollment of 626. Beginning May 2022, the College of Dental Medicine expanded its D.M.D. program to the Tampa Bay Regional Campus. It admitted its second cohort in May 2023, for a total of 72 international dental students enrolled in Tampa Bay as of June 30, 2023. College Achievements: Two significant academic program recognitions occurred in fiscal 2023, each many years in the making. The H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship received accreditation from AACSB International-The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the highest standard of achievement for business education. The Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (KPCAM) received full accreditation for its M.D. program from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). NSU is one of only four universities in the United States to offer both a D.O. and M.D. program, and the first and only university in the state of Florida to grant both degrees. During fiscal 2023, NSU graduated 424 physicians (D.O. and M.D. graduates combined), helping to alleviate the local and national physician shortage.Desc

DescNova Southeastern University goes beyond its primary mission by reaching out to the community with diverse service programs and community-based research. NSU is 1 of only 360 colleges and universities nationally selected for the Carnegie Foundation's Community Engagement Classification, and 1 of only 59 colleges and universities to hold both community engaged and high research activity designations. NSU delivers tangible benefits, including junior kindergarten through doctoral education, physical infrastructure, a professional workforce, employment opportunities, delivery of health care and law services in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, lifelong learning options, community-service initiatives, and public access to cultural and scholarly experiences. NSU continues to grow its academic and scientific research activities. More than 200 research projects are currently under way at NSU, including studies on cardiovascular disease, anticancer therapies, chronic fatigue syndrome, autism, coral reef restoration, stem cells, and wildlife DNA forensics, among other subjects. The Center for Collaborative Research (CCR) consists of 215,000 square feet of research and collaborative spaces. This project is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is the first NSU facility to achieve a LEED certification level of Gold. The facility houses core facilities including Genomics, Flow Cytometry, Cell Therapy and Imaging. The CCR brings multiple disciplines together, with students and NSU faculty members partnering with professionals and organizations outside of the NSU community-furthering cutting-edge research and developing technologies that will benefit the global community. During fiscal 2023, NSU researchers conducted ongoing studies addressing topics of national significance and attained various new, multiyear grant awards. For example, the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences was collectively awarded approximately $3.3 million from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for various coral reef research and mitigation efforts promoting the restoration, resilience, and diversity of coral species impacted by disease. KPCAM was awarded $2.3 million to establish a research program for nanomedicine, novel drug discovery, and cancer research. The Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy was awarded $1.5 million from the National Institutes of Health to enhance research training for underrepresented undergraduate students and to foster successful completion of biomedical graduate programs. The College of Computing and Engineering was awarded $2.5 million to build research and education infrastructure in high-performance computing and develop a high-skilled cybersecurity workforce. Also of note and in line with NSU's core value of innovation, the Alan B. Levan | NSU Broward Center of Innovation was awarded nearly $4.0 million in grants from the United States Department of Education to build artificial intelligence and spatial computing infrastructure to broaden access and meet workforce demands in South Florida's emerging technology sector.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part III, Line 1a:The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale acquires art for its collection through purchase or gift. As permitted by SFAS 116 (ASC 958), accounting for contributions received and contributions made, the Museum does not include its collection items as assets in the consolidated statement of financial position. Accordingly, no value has been assigned to the Museum's art collection. The University's policy requires any proceeds from sales of collection items to be used to acquire other items for the collection or for the direct care of its collection (expenditures that enhance the life, usefulness, or quality of an object, and improve the physical impact and condition of an item). Proceeds from the sale of collection items and expenditures for collection items purchased are reflected in the consolidated statement of activities within other revenues and expenses, respectively.
Part III, Line 4:Nova Southeastern University operates the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. In service to the public, the mission of the Museum is to actively engage diverse audiences in the appreciation of works of art through innovative exhibitions, education programs, publications, and collection activities. This mission is consistent with the University's exempt educational purpose. Part V, line 1g Col (a): The amounts listed in Part V, Line 1g, include endowment-related pledges receivable. As of June 30, 2023 endowment-related pledges receivable totaled $41.2 million.
Part V, Line 4:The University's endowment consists of approximately 412 individual endowments (which includes both donor restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the board of trustees) which have been set aside and invested primarily for scholarships.
Part X, Line 2:Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes: The University follows the guidance contained in ASC 740, Income Taxes. ASC 740 addresses the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an entity's financial statements and prescribes a threshold of more-likely-than-not for recognition and de-recognition of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. There were no uncertain tax positions recorded in the consolidated financial statements for fiscal years 2023 or 2022.

ExplanationNSU Office of Sponsored Programs maintains a written, formal policy that outlines the procedures and guidelines for monitoring the use of sponsored funds by subrecipients. Prior to entering into a subaward agreement, NSU will assess subrecipient risk based on factors such as financial stability, experience with federal awards, quality of management systems and internal controls, and prior audit results. NSU will determine what type of monitoring activities are warranted based on risk, and develop a subrecipient monitoring plan. NSU will subsequently enter into a subaward agreement with each subrecipient which properly identifies prime award information, compliance requirements, and subrecipient monitoring documents required, as applicable. Throughout the period of performance, the Principal Investigator for the project monitors the programmatic activities of the subrecipient; determining that appropriate progress has been made; receiving, reviewing and retaining copies of required programmatic reports; and reviewing/approving subrecipient invoices prior to submitting to the NSU Office of Sponsored Programs for approval and processing. As part of the initial risk assessment and throughout the period of performance of the subaward, NSU will collaboratively review any deficiencies pertaining to the sponsored award that are identified through audits or other means, and issue a management decision. Schedule I, Part I, Line 2: Institutional grants awarded to students are recorded to individual student accounts and to each college departmental account using specific contra revenue account codes. The number of recipients and amount of awards varies by center and program. Funds set aside for scholarships are budgeted annually and included in the University's budget plan approved by the Board of Trustees.ExplanationTxt

Part I, Line 1aSupplemental Compensation Information: First class travel - Per the travel policy of Nova Southeastern University, Inc., all travel must be by the most direct or economical route. Higher fares may be reimbursable only when coach accommodations would: (1) require circuitous routing; (2) require travel during unreasonable hours; (3) greatly increase the duration of the flight; (4) result in additional costs which would offset the transportation savings; (5) offer accommodations which are not reasonably adequate for the medical needs of the traveler. These exceptions will require the traveler to submit a letter of approval signed by their Dean or Vice President. When traveling by air, the Board of Trustees have approved the President and his spouse to travel at a First Class fare (or business class if it is not available), while taking care to use available coupons, rewards or certificates when feasible. Travel for companions - Per the travel policy of Nova Southeastern University, Inc., when a spouse or dependent accompanies the employee, the University will pay for only the travel costs of the employee. Occasionally, spouses of faculty and staff are asked to travel on University business. Spouse travel reimbursement by the University requires approval by a Dean or Officer, or their authorized representative. If the business purpose of the spousal travel is not properly documented, it will be taxed to the employee. Gross-up payments - Tax gross-up payments may occasionally be provided to university employees and in those instances are included in taxable compensation. Housing allowance - A housing allowance is provided to the president of the University. This allowance is fully taxable to the recipient. Social club dues - The university pays for club dues on behalf of certain executives, some of which are treated as taxable to the employee and included in his or her compensation.
Part I, Line 4bGeorge L. Hanbury's employment agreement includes a deferred compensation arrangement. The estimated deferred amount attributable to one service year is reported in Schedule J, Part II, Column(C).
Part I, Line 5Steven Kaltman received an incentive bonus payment that was calculated as a percentage of net collections from dental clinic activity. Amounts paid are shown in Schedule J, Part II, Column(BII).
