| Part III, Line 4: | Philbrook is a general fine arts museum committed to collecting and exhibiting art from a broad range of periods and cultures. The size (approximately 13,000 objects, including long-term loans) and variety of the collection has made Philbrook a unique resource for the state and region. Collection areas include: American and European painting and sculpture; Native American art, prints and drawings; Asian art; African sculpture; American and European decorative art; and antiquities. Philbrook adopted a comprehensive collections management policy in 1981 which was revised and updated with staff input and Collection Committee approval in 1992 and 2006. This policy addresses procedures for accessioning, deaccessioning, documentation and other aspects of collection management. Philbrook's collection policy provides that permanent collections are 1) held for public exhibition, education or research in furtherance of public service rather than financial gain; 2) protected, kept unencumbered, cared for and preserved; and 3) subject to a policy that requires the proceeds from sales of collection items to be restricted to the acquisition of other items for collections. | |
