DescriptionThe Advanced Center to Improve Pediatric Mental Health Care (ACIPMHC) research agenda has a strategic focus on improvement of public pediatric mental health care, primarily in the mental health and child welfare service sectors, through improved integration of evidence-based practice and usual care. The center's program of practice research spans clinical epidemiology studies linked to evidence-based practice, effectiveness, and implementation studies. The research agenda will have a primary focus on effectiveness and equity as two of the six aims for improving health care from the "Crossing the Quality Chasm" report. An overarching center perspective of cultural exchange will guide active partnership with major stakeholders in youth mental health care, including youth and family consumers, providers, program and funding managers, system administrators, policy makers, and intervention and services researchers. Five articles were submitted for publication in a special issue of the Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research journal during this time period: 1. Aarons, G. A., Hurlburt, M., & Horwitz, S. M. C. (2011). Advancing a conceptual model of evidence-based practice implementation in public service sectors. Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research, 38, 4-23. 2. Chamberlain, P., Snowden, L. R., Padgett, C., Saldana, L., Roles, J., Holmes, L., et al. (2011). A strategy for assessing costs of implementing new practices in the child welfare system: Adapting the English cost calculator in the United States. Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research, 38, 24-31. 3. Horwitz, S. M. C., & Landsverk, J. (2011). Methodological Issues in Child Welfare and Children's Mental Health Implementation Research. Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research, 38, 1-3. 4. Landsverk, J., Brown, C. H., Rolls Reutz, J., Palinkas, L., & Horwitz, S. M. C. (2011). Design elements in implementation research: A structured review of child welfare and child mental health studies. Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research, 38, 54-63. 5. Palinkas, L. A., Aarons, G. A., Horwitz, S., Chamberlain, P., Hurlburt, M., & Landsverk, J. (2011). Mixed method designs in implementation research. Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research, 38, 44-53. 6. Schoenwald, S. K., Garland, A. F., Chapman, J. E., Frazier, S. L., Sheidow, A. J., & Southam-Gerow, M. A. (2011). Toward the effective and efficient measurement of implementation fidelity. Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research, 38, 32-43. Several presentations on the projects were made at the March 2010 National Institutes of Health conference on Dissemination and Implementation: 1. Aarons, G. A. & Cafri, G., & Slymen. Analysis of Implementation Data with Time Varying Clustering Effects. (Paper) 2. Aarons, G.A., Cafri, G., Lugo, L.. Expanding the Domains of Attitudes Towards Evidence-Based Practice. (Poster) 3. Chamberlain, P., & Aarons, G.A.. Scaling Up: How Do We Design and Measure It. (Think Tank) 4. Schoenwald, S.K., Garland, A.F., Sheidow, A.J., Southam-Gerow, M.A., Frazier, S.L., Chorpita, B.F., Henry, D.B., & Atkins, M.S. (Think Tank) The long term objectives of the study are to conduct effectiveness and implementation research that will inform strategies for improving mental health care delivered to children involved in public mental health and child welfare service sectors by achieving greater integration of evidence-based practice (EBP) and usual care and to support the development of innovative strategies to address emerging methodological issues in effectiveness and implementation research. The objectives during July 2009 to June 2010 were 1) the development of a computer application to calculate and assist in optimizing power in multi-level implementation research studies, 2) the coding of approximately 600 research papers which include adherence/fidelity measurement, 3) the development of a conceptual model of evidence-based practice implementation, 4) a review of the various uses of mixed qualitative/quantitative methods in mental health services research, 5) revision of the UK Cost Calculator for use in the US, 6) utilization of existing PDR data sets to further explore the predictive validity of the Parent Daily Report (PDR) with respect to negative foster placement disruptions, 7) to conduct qualitative work to understand how use of the PDR might fit into existing practice patterns within child welfare from foster parent and child welfare agency perspectives, and 8) examining the reports of economic analyses in child welfare within the context of decision analysis.Description

DescriptionThe project is designed to adapt Pivotal Response Training (PRT), an evidence-based intervention for children with autism, for use in public special education classrooms. The project will not only help to translate PRT into schools, but will also serve as a model for translating other evidence-based interventions into school settings. Program Accomplishments include: -3 presentations at academic conferences (One on collaborative development of an intervention manual, two on specific intervention elements studied for adaptation to classrooms) - 6 meetings with Advisory Board of teachers and school administrators (6 teachers/administrators and 3 researchers) to discuss intervention manual development, teacher training plan, and intervention resource creation - 39 typically developing children and 21 children with autism participated in intervention element adaptation studies (All typically developing children and 19 children with autism participated for 1-2 days (Multiple cues study); 2 typically developing children participated for 4 weeks (turn taking study). - 4 children with autism and one teacher participated in a 6-week (2 meetings per week) pilot test of adapted intervention procedures. - 6 researchers and 3 teachers not involved with the project but familiar with the original intervention reviewed the adapted intervention manual draft and provided feedback 5 members of the autism community nationwide (Southern CA, Philadelphia, Louisville, and Portland, OR) reviewed the manual draft and provided feedback. - Adapted Intervention manual submitted for publication to major publishing company The primary long-term objective of the DOE project is to adapt an evidence-based practice, Pivotal Response Training, for use in community classrooms through collaboration with teachers and school administrators and testing in real-word settings. Specific objectives in this time period included conducting studies of specific intervention elements (e.g., response to simultaneous multiple cues, turn taking) for possible adaptation, pilot test of adapted intervention procedures, and completion and review of the adapted intervention manual for use in the effectiveness trial.Description

DescriptionIn the past years of this project, Child and Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC) developed and maintained a computerized multi-site outcomes data collection system for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in San Diego County. CASRC also provided training, technical support, data management, and evaluation services under mandated State of California initiative. Now the contract has moved beyond data collection and reporting to greater involvement in system design and development. As part of the Mental Health Services Act planning process, CASRC completed a gap analyses on the Children's Mental Health System, identifying areas in which youth are being underserved. We also developed a set of maps to elucidate where different populations are located within the County and assist in determining where new services needed to be located. We have also provided consultation on the selection of new measures and outcomes standards for the Children's system and developed reports accordingly. In addition to the County's Annual Report of Children's Mental Health Services, two manuscripts have been submitted for publication: 1.Trask, E., & Garland, A. F. (2010). Are children improving? Results from outcome measurement in a large mental health system. Manuscript submitted for publication. 2.Trask, E., Fawley-King, K., & Garland, A. F. (2010). Beyond clinical severity: Predictors of high-cost outpatient service utilization. Manuscript submitted for publication. Although the project does not serve clients, it produces an annual report for use by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Departments to guide its decision makers in the appropriate use and application of service programs for children in the county.Description

The Committee's written records include the (1) terms of the arrangement with the disqualified person (including the date the arrangement was approved); (2) a list of members present during the discussion of the transaction (and how the members voted when it was approved); and (3) a description of the comparable data relied on by the Committee.
