| Activity Or Mission Description | The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, founded in 1853, provides activities and programs to improve the quality of life through academic, spiritual, physical, and social changes in individuals and families. The YMCA is a charitable organization that embraces all, regardless of race, gender, ethnic origin, creed, physical ability or the financial wherewithal to pay for the social services provided. Financial assistance, in the form of the YMCA Membership for All program, is available for those who cannot afford to pay the full cost of membership or program participation and was awarded to more than 25,000 individuals and families in 2011. YMCAs are founded by volunteers, led by volunteers and encourage volunteerism in their program delivery. | Description | Youth Development - CampingFor children, ages five to fifteen, 20 YMCA summer day camp programs are the sites of caring, nurturing environments creating a healthy outlet for boundless energy. The camps are designed for children to learn about themselves and how to get along with others, caring and sharing in an atmosphere consistent with the mission and vision of the YMCA. On a weekly basis, more than 1,800 children attended a fun-filled, literacy-rich, well-supervised summer at YMCA Day Camp in 2011. An excellent option for working parents, many families find this character-building time as important as a critical source of summer child care. Day camp programs have implemented Drop Everything and Read Initiative to encourage youth to read for a minimum of 30 minutes per day in order to combat summer reading loss. At residential camp (YMCA Camp Ernst), 300 children and teens were served weekly for ten weeks. Over 10% of these camp participants were awarded full or partial scholarships to cover the cost of camp. The camp provides an incentive for all campers to perform community service (known as Community Exchange) for as many as 20 hours. | Description | Sports & RecreationA critical part of the YMCA is the opportunity for people to enjoy fellowship and community connectedness through activities including, among others, senior exercise classes, adult sports leagues, informal education programs, gymnastics, swimming, basketball, soccer and sports skills classes. Over 8,000 youth enrolled in YMCA sports and recreation programs in 2011.The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati is a partner in Activate America, a nationwide movement to combat obesity and diabetes through outreach and education. With the support of the Center for Disease Control, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Pioneering Healthier Communities grants in Ohio and Northern Kentucky, the YMCA has developed effective, sustainable strategies to promote healthy lifestyles throughout the region. YMCA staff regularly work with community partners to provide glucose screenings, diabetes education, blood pressure checks, and health fairs. The Y's Diabetes Prevention Program, in partnership with the nation's largest health insurer, provides specialized services for individuals at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Participants receive education, support and encouragement from trained lifestyle coaches to encourage healthy eating, physical activity, stress reduction and behavior changes that will benefit their healthMore than 30% of all who joined the YMCA for the first time in 2011 did so using financial assistance. Over $3,000,000 in subsidies helped kids, adults and families enjoy membership and programs at the YMCA. Water Safety and InstructionA pioneer in water safety and swim instructional programs for over 100 years, the YMCA fills a major community need and involves men, women, and children from six months to over 80 years of age in its Aquatics programs. With nearly 40 pools, the YMCA serves more swimmers than any other private organization in the area, employing more than 1,000 lifeguards and 100 swim instructors throughout the year. In 2011, YMCA aquatics programs hosted a wide variety of exercise and instructional classes, including adult fitness, aqua fitness, senior citizen swim, and classes for special populations. Aquatic opportunities were also extended to the local school systems through the YMCA's Learn to Swim program, taught to elementary school children. Over 25,000 aquatics participants received swim instruction in 2011. A major portion of the excess of Other program expenses over related revenue in these areas is covered by grants, government contracts and contributions.Inclusion, Education, and Leadership DevelopmentThe YMCA of Greater Cincinnati creates community and represents a cross-section of those who live and work in its service area. In 2011, over 2,500 program and policy volunteers committed themselves to specific programs and services, making the Y a vital presence in its three-state region. The YMCA Black and Latino Achievers program continues to impact over 500 youth of color in developing character and assists them in pursuing further education and career opportunities. Over 50 multi-cultural professional adults were honored in November, 2011 as leaders and mentors in the community.
