Descriptionfood distributions: CITY HARVEST IS THE WORLD'S FIRST FOOD RESCUE ORGANIZATION. THIS YEAR, CITY HARVEST WILL COLLECT MORE THAN 42 MILLION POUNDS OF EXCESS FOOD FROM ALL SEGMENTS OF THE FOOD INDUSTRY, INCLUDING RESTAURANTS, GROCERS, CORPORATE CAFETERIAS, MANUFACTURERS, AND FARMS. THIS FOOD IS THEN DELIVERED FREE OF CHARGE TO SOME 600 COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY BY A FLEET OF TRUCKS AND BIKES. TOGETHER, WE HELP TO FEED THE MORE THAN ONE MILLION NEW YORKERS THAT SEEK EMERGENCY FOOD EACH YEAR. WITH A FLEET OF 18 TRUCKS AND THREE CARGO BICYCLES WE RESCUE FOOD THAT WOULD OTHERWISE GO TO WASTE FROM THOUSANDS OF DONORS AND DISTRIBUTE IT, FREE OF CHARGE, TO NEARLY 600 FOOD PANTRIES, SOUP KITCHENS, AND OTHER COMMUNITY FEEDING PROGRAMS. CITY HARVEST COLLECTS HIGH-QUALITY, SURPLUS FOOD FROM MORE THAN 2,400 RESTAURANTS, GREENMARKETS, WHOLESALERS AND MANUFACTURERS, AND DELIVERS IT, FREE OF CHARGE TO A NETWORK OF NEARLY 600 COMMUNITY PROGRAMS. IN THE 30 YEARS SINCE OUR FOUNDING, WE HAVE COLLECTED MORE THAN 350 MILLION POUNDS OF DONATED FOOD, ENABLING AGENCIES ACROSS THE CITY TO PROVIDE GROCERIES OR PREPARED MEALS TO THE WORKING POOR, CHILDREN, AND SENIORS. PRODUCE COMPRISES AT LEAST 60 PERCENT OF OUR DELIVERIES, AND OUR FOOD COLLECTION INCREASINGLY EMPHASIZES LOCAL FOOD FROM FARM SOURCES. 1.FRUIT BOWL: THROUGH OUR FRUIT BOWL PROGRAM, WE WORK WITH HEAD START, PRESCHOOL, AND AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS, TO PROVIDE CHILDREN WITH NUTRITIOUS SNACKS AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO ADOPT LIFELONG HEALTHY EATING HABITS BY DELIVERING FRESH FRUIT AND DAIRY ALONG WITH NUTRITION EDUCATION. 2.RESCUING AND DELIVERING FRESH PRODUCE: THROUGH HARVESTWORKS WE OFFER NEW YORK STATE GROWERS INCENTIVES TO HARVEST, PACK, AND DELIVER CROPS THAT MIGHT NOT BE BROUGHT TO MARKET DUE TO FLUCTUATING PRICES AND UNCERTAIN MARKET DEMAND. WITHIN THE CITY, OUR GREENMARKET RESCUES RELY ON VOLUNTEERS TO COLLECT PRODUCE FROM SEVEN GROWNYC GREENMARKETS. AND OUR LONG-STANDING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HUNTS POINT TERMINAL MARKET IN THE BRONX, THE WORLD'S LARGEST WHOLESALE PRODUCE TERMINAL, ENABLES US TO CAPITALIZE ON PRODUCE NOT SOLD BY THE END OF THE DAY. 3.SERVING THE KOSHER COMMUNITY: CITY HARVEST HAS BEEN SERVING NEW YORK CITY'S HUNGRY KOSHER COMMUNITY FOR OVER 10 YEARS. WE DELIVER MORE THAN TWO MILLION POUNDS OF KOSHER EMERGENCY FOOD ANNUALLY, THE VAST MAJORITY OF WHICH IS PRODUCE, TO A NETWORK OF SOME 30 KOSHER FOOD PANTRIES AND SOUP KITCHENS ACROSS THE FIVE BOROUGHS. TOGETHER WE HELP TO FEED THE MORE THAN ONE MILLION VISITORS TO THE KOSHER EMERGENCY FEEDING PROGRAMS IN OUR NETWORK. 4.CITY HARVEST'S GREEN FLEET WAS ESTABLISHED TO ENSURE THAT OUR FOOD RESCUE AND DELIVERY OPERATIONS ARE EXECUTED IN THE MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE WAY POSSIBLE. OUR FLEET IS CONFIGURED OF A RANGE OF VEHICLES THAT ALLOWS US TO MAXIMIZE OUR RESPONSIVE FOOD RESCUE AND DELIVERY WHILE KEEPING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT ON NEW YORK CITY LOW. CITY HARVEST REMAINS COMMITTED TO UTILIZING THE MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY VEHICLES AND TECHNOLOGY. MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY VEHICLES AND TECHNOLOGY.Description

Descriptionfood operations: OUR HEALTHY NEIGHBORHOODS INITIATIVE ENVISIONS THE CREATION OF COMMUNITIES WHERE NUTRITIOUS FOOD LIKE FRESH PRODUCE IS AVAILABLE, AFFORDABLE, AND IN HIGH DEMAND. CITY HARVEST STRATEGICALLY FOCUSES ON LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES WHERE AFFORDABLE, HEALTHY FOOD IS NOT READILY AVAILABLE AND WHERE RESIDENTS OFTEN SUFFER FROM HIGH RATES OF DIET-RELATED DISEASES LIKE DIABETES AND OBESITY. TO MAXIMIZE OUR IMPACT, WE HAVE IDENTIFIED COMMUNITIES WITH HIGH HUNGER AND POVERTY RATES INCLUDING THE SOUTH BRONX, BEDFORD-STUYVESANT IN BROOKLYN, WASHINGTON HEIGHTS / INWOOD IN MANHATTAN, THE NORTH SHORE OF STATEN ISLAND, AND NORTHWEST QUEENS. BY FLOODING THESE NEIGHBORHOODS WITH RESOURCES - FROM FRESH, FREE FOOD TO NUTRITION EDUCATION TO COMMUNITY SUPPORT - AND WORKING CLOSELY WITH LOCAL RESIDENTS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO AND DEMAND FOR HEALTHY FOOD, WE EXPECT TO CREATE A MODEL FOR A HEALTHY, FOOD SECURE NEIGHBORHOOD. THROUGH MULTI-PRONGED PROGRAMMING DESIGNED TO MEET EMERGENCY NEEDS WHILE INSPIRING POSITIVE CHANGES TO EATING, COOKING, AND SHOPPING BEHAVIORS, WE PROVIDE THE BROAD RANGE OF SERVICES NECESSARY TO ADDRESS BOTH IMMEDIATE AND SYSTEMIC PROBLEMS. THIS STRATEGY, AND OUR CAPACITY TO TACKLE BOTH THE SHORT- AND LONG-TERM, SETS HEALTHY NEIGHBORHOODS APART FROM ITS PEERS. 1.RAISING AWARENESS OF HEALTHY HABITS AND DRIVING BEHAVIOR CHANGE: NUTRITION EDUCATION SERVES AS THE SPARK THAT GROWS DEMAND FOR HEALTHY FOOD. OUR PROGRAMS ARE TARGETED TO LOW-INCOME CHILDREN, FAMILIES, AND SENIORS AND WE WORK CLOSELY WITH PARTNERS TO OFFER TWO FORMS OF NUTRITION PROGRAMS: COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS AND LESSONS THAT ADVANCE AWARENESS OF HEALTHY SHOPPING, COOKING, AND EATING BEHAVIORS; AND CLASSES AND HEALTHY SHOPPING WORKSHOPS THAT IMPROVE THESE HEALTHY BEHAVIORS. PAIRING NUTRITION EDUCATION WITH HEALTHY FOOD ACCESS, AND OFFERING OUR PROGRAMS AT LOCATIONS WHERE HEALTHY FOOD IS AVAILABLE, IS A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF OUR STRATEGY TO TRANSFORM THE FOOD LANDSCAPE. 2.IMPROVING ACCESS TO HEALTHY AFFORDABLE FOOD: LIMITED AVAILABILITY OF HEALTHY, AFFORDABLE, GOOD QUALITY FOOD OFTEN POSES A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE TO RESIDENTS LIVING IN OUR HEALTHY NEIGHBORHOODS. FOLLOWING THE COMPLETION OF A COMMUNITY FOOD ASSESSMENT (CFA), CITY HARVEST SUPPORTS THE IMPROVEMENT OR EXPANSION OF OUTLETS TO ENSURE THAT RESIDENTS CAN FIND AFFORDABLE NUTRITIOUS FOOD IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS. BY COUPLING THIS MARKET-BASED WORK WITH NUTRITION EDUCATION, WE ARE WORKING TO CHANGE THE RELATIONSHIP THAT RESIDENTS HAVE WITH FOOD. THROUGH INDIVIDUALIZED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND MARKETING SUPPORT WE WILL IMPROVE THE AVAILABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY OF NUTRITIOUS FOOD FOR LOW-INCOME NEW YORKERS IN THE RETAIL OUTLETS THEY UTILIZE MOST. 3.INCREASING COMMUNITY CAPACITY: FROM SUCCESSION PLANNING AND FUNDRAISING WORKSHOPS FOR OUR COMMUNITY-BASED EMERGENCY FEEDING PARTNERS TO FACILITATING COMMUNITY ACTION NETWORKS COMPRISED OF LOCAL LEADERS, OUR AIM IS THE SAME: TO ENGAGE PASSIONATE COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO SUSTAIN FOOD SYSTEM CHANGES AND HELP MEET THE UNIQUE FOOD NEEDS OF THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD OVER TIME. 4. ANTI-HUNGER AND FOOD SYSTEM ADVOCACY: CITY HARVEST IS A RESPECTED VOICE IN ANTI-HUNGER AND FOOD SYSTEMS ADVOCACY, WITH ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT. CITY HARVEST COLLABORATES WITH GOVERNMENT TO EXAMINE FOOD ACCESS AND OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES NECESSARY TO PROMOTE HEALTH, AND ALSO WORKS TO INFLUENCE HUNGER AND FOOD SYSTEMS POLICY AT THE CITY, STATE, AND FEDERAL LEVELS IN A WAY THAT IS CLOSELY ALIGNED WITH OUR PROGRAM GOALS.Description

IdentifierIdentifierReturn ReferenceReturnReferenceExplanationExplanation
Endowment FundsPart V, Line 4City Harvest's endowment is intended to support the general charitable mission of the organization. The organization anticipates using the endowment's interest and dividends to support its charitable programs, while leaving the principal and gains to grow to continue to fund the organization as it grows.
FIN 48Part X, Line 2Effective June 30, 2010, City Harvest adopted the provisions of FASB Interpretation No. 48 (FIN 48") Accounting for Uncertainties in Income Taxes - an interpretation of FASB Statement No. 109," now incorporated in Accounting Standards Codification ("ASC") 740. ASC 740-10 clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, including issues relating to financial statement recognition and measurement. This section provides that the tax effects from an uncertain tax position can be recognized in the financial statements only if the position is "more-likely-than-not" to be sustained if the position were to be challenged by a taxing authority. The assessment of the tax position is based solely on the technical merits of the position, without regard to the likelihood that the tax position may be challenged. City Harvest is exempt from federal income taxation by virtue of being an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Nevertheless, City Harvest may be subject to tax on income unrelated to its exempt purpose, unless that income is otherwise excluded by the Code. The tax years ending June 30, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 are still open to audit for both federal and state purposes. The adoption of ASC 740-10 did not have a material impact on City Harvest's financial statements, as management determined that there are no uncertain tax positions within its financial statements.
