| Description | CENTER FOR COGNITIVE STUDIES IN MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH: IN 2012, THE CENTER FOR COGNITIVE STUDIES IN MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH'S (CCSMPH) EVIDENCE-BASED RESEARCH LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CLINICAL INTERVENTIONS, IMPROVING CLINICAL WORK ACTIVITIES -SUCH AS A VIRTUAL REALITY-BASED TRAINING FOR TRAINEES FOR CORRECTING AND RECOVERING FROM MEDICAL ERRORS (IN COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS-HOUSTON), NEW COMPUTERIZED WEANING PROTOCOL FOR RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS TO STANDARDIZE THE WEANING PROCESS OF MECHANICALLY-VENTILATED CRITICALLY-ILL PATIENTS (IN COLLABORATION WITH MEMORIAL HERMANN HOSPITAL, HOUSTON), AND PATIENT CARE TRANSITION TOOLS FOR SAFE PATIENT HANDOFFS DURING CLINICAL SHIFTS. RESEARCH RESULTS FROM THIS WORK HAVE APPEARED IN NUMEROUS JOURNAL AND CONFERENCE PUBLICATIONS. ONE OF THE CENTER'S MAJOR FINDINGS IN DECISION-MAKING IN COMPLEX ENVIRONMENTS HAS SHOWN THE PAUCITY OF CURRENT EVIDENCE-BASED EVALUATION METHODS AND MEASURES TO CAPTURE INTRICATE AND NON-LINEAR NATURE OF COMPLEX WORK ACTIVITIES. THIS IS IMPORTANT GIVEN THAT HEALTH CARE IS GENERALLY VIEWED AS COMPLEX AND THIS RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR CURRENT EVALUATION METHODS. IN 2012, WITH COLLABORATORS FROM COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER, GRANTS WERE SUBMITTED TO THE AGENCY FOR HEALTHCARE RESEARCH AND QUALITY (AHRQ) TO STUDY THE IMPACT OF ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD SYSTEM IN CLINICAL EMERGENCY CONDITIONS, WHICH ATTEND TO HIGH ACUITY PATIENTS IN THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT, AND ALSO TO THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH (NIMH), TO INVESTIGATE AND IMPROVE THE PRIMARY CARE DOCTORS' ABILITY TO DIAGNOSE AND MANAGE SEVERE DEPRESSION AND POST TRAUMATIC DISORDER. A GRANT WAS ALSO SUBMITTED TO NIH IN COLLABORATION WITH INDUSTRY TO EVALUATE A DECISION-MAKING INTERVENTION TOOL TO INCREASE CONSUMER PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN CLINICAL TRIALS. | Description | THE CENTER FOR HISTORY OF MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH: THE NYAM LIBRARY HAS BEEN SERVING THE GENERAL PUBLIC INTERESTED IN ACCESS TO HEALTH AND MEDICAL INFORMATION SINCE 1878. SERVICES RANGE FROM TRADITIONAL LIBRARY ACTIVITIES TO THE AGGREGATION AND DISSEMINATION OF GREY LITERATURE IN PUBLIC HEALTH, DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND URBAN HEALTH THROUGH WEB-BASED PORTALS. THE LIBRARY CONTAINS ABOUT 550,000 ITEMS, OF WHICH ABOUT 32,000 ARE RARE BOOKS. PRIMARY SOURCE MATERIALS IN THE COLLECTION ARE SUPPLEMENTED BY AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF SECONDARY SOURCES. ARCHIVES, MANUSCRIPTS, PAMPHLETS AND VARIOUS EPHEMERAL MATERIALS ALSO FORM PART OF THE HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS. ALL OF THE NYAM LIBRARY RESOURCES ARE FREELY AVAILABLE TO ANYONE WHO WISHES TO USE THEM. IN 2012, THE LIBRARY AND HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS WERE RESTRUCTURED AS THE CENTER FOR THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH. ALL OF THE LIBRARY FUNCTIONS AND THE WORK OF THE GLADYS BROOKS BOOK AND PAPER CONSERVATION LABORATORY FALL WITHIN THE WORK OF THE NEW CENTER. IN 2012, THE CENTER RECEIVED A CONTRIBUTION FROM A PRIVATE FOUNDATION FOR THE NAMING OF THE RARE BOOK READING ROOM. FUNDS WILL BE USED FOR RENOVATION AND UPGRADING OF THE SPACE, PROGRAMMING AND TO SUPPORT THE WORK OF THE CURATORIAL STAFF MOVING FORWARD. THE CENTER ALSO RECEIVED ADDITIONAL DONATIONS FOR EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH AND RARE BOOK ROOM ACTIVITIES. A GRANT WAS MADE BY A PRIVATE FOUNDATION FOR ENHANCED CATALOGING AND CONSERVATION OF 33 MANUSCRIPT RECEIPT BOOKS. AN ADDITIONAL GIFT WAS MADE TO THE CONSERVATION LABORATORY TO SUPPORT CONSERVATION PROJECTS IN THE LAB. THE STAFF IN THE LIBRARY, THE RARE BOOK ROOM AND THE CONSERVATION LABORATORY CONDUCTED 37 TOURS AND 29 CLASSES FOR STUDENT GROUPS AT A VARIETY OF LEVELS, AND HOSTED SIX CONSERVATION WORKSHOPS. WE SPONSORED NINE HISTORY OF MEDICINE LECTURES AND HOSTED TWO RESIDENTIAL FELLOWS RESEARCHING TOPICS IN THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH. A CONSERVATION INTERN SPENT THREE MONTHS IN RESIDENCE WORKING WITH THE CONSERVATORS IN THE LABORATORY. | Description | DIVISION OF HEALTH POLICY (DHP) works to improve public health by bringing together researchers, policymakers, community members, and key stakeholders to think about strategic and creative solutions to the root causes of poor health outcomes. DHP promotes active aging, better prevention, and eliminating health disparities between populations as key factors in improving health. Efforts in 2011 included supporting Aging Improvement Districts; enrolling 1,000 businesses in an Age-friendly Retail Initiative; offering training, technical assistance, and support to coalitions working to increase access to healthy food and opportunities for exercise to more than 550 people in eight cities; and hosting a summit entitled "What Should New York State Do Now to Prevent Obesity?" During 2011, DHP managed 13 federal, foundation, New York City and private grants.
