| Description | Department of Education:The function of the AOA Department of Education is to promote excellence in osteopathic medicine through education. In 2013, the AOA:Division of Certification-Was responsible for the development of certification and continuous certification processes for over 27,000 osteopathic physician diplomates and for the development and implementation of the new Osteopathic Continuous Certification (OCC) process for each of the 18 specialty certifying boards and their subspecialty certifications.-Developed and launched new OCC tracking system for diplomates. -Awarded 1,369 new general certifications, 109 new certifications of added qualifications, 74 new certifications of special qualifications, and 1,118 re-certifications to osteopathic physicians. Division of Educational Resource Services-Monitored and recorded the progress of 7,498 trainees in 1,068 residency training programs.Division of Postdoctoral Training -Approved 79 new programs (781 positions) and reviewed 147 programs for Continuing Approval.-Conducted five OPTI continuing approval site visits.-Executed a national educational conference for residency program directors and medical educators. Division of Continuing Medical Education-Accomplished a national educational conference for medical directors, educators, and CME sponsors. -Planned, developed, and implemented new CME tracking system, providing recording of CME for multiple specialties and at the subspecialty level.-Monitored and recorded over 15 million CME credit hours for the 2010-2012 CME cycle. -Re-accredited a total of 169 CME Sponsors and accredited 7 new CME Sponsors.Division of Training Program Review Services-Began its charge of reviewing all osteopathic training programs, with the first review on January 15, 2013. | Description | Publications:The AOA publishes peer-reviewed scientific articles in its publications that provide continuing medical education (CME) to osteopathic physicians (DOs) and other readers. The articles also complement the medical education of osteopathic medical students. The peer-reviewed publications include The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association (JAOA), JAOA supplements, AOA Health Watch and Dialogue and Diagnosis. The print publications, aimed at educating physicians so they can take better care of patients, are distributed to more than 40,000 primary care DOs and select specialists as well as medical and scientific libraries. More than 80,000 DOs and osteopathic medical students receive the online versions of these publications and the AOA's online news publication, The DO, to keep DOs and osteopathic medical students up-to-date on the profession. | Description |
